Motion sickness history, food neophobia, and sensation seeking.

Motion sickness is believed to be caused by conflicting sensory signals, a situation that mimics the effects of ingesting certain toxins. Thus, one might suspect that individuals who have experienced a relatively high frequency of motion sickness may be particularly vigilant about avoiding anything that produces nausea, induding potentially nauseating toxins. Consequently, they may be more resistant to trying new foods, i.e., be more food neophobic, since unfamiliar foods can have unexpected adverse effects due to toxins or allergens. Likewise, many highly stimulating experiences can trigger m…

Motion and space sickness: intestinal and autonomic correlates.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal changes that occur during motion sickness. It is important to consider that motion sickness is a syndrome that can vary between individuals and within individuals and between and within motion sickness-inducing stimuli. Vomiting should be considered a discrete event of the motion sickness syndrome. Given so much variability in motion sickness symptoms, it should be expected that the physiological response to motion sickness will vary as well. This appears to be the case with the autonomic nervo…

Contextual modulation in the V1 real motion cells.

Retinal images move when the eyes move across a stationary object, or alternatively, when the object moves while the eyes are stationary. Orientation selective cells in V1 showed preference for these two types of retinal image slip. Furthermore, if an orientation cell preferred moving objects, the response to an element of a complex image was modulated by background stimuli placed outside the cell's receptive field. However, the response of cells, that showed no preference for a moving object, was hardly affected by the background. These results indicate that figure and ground are already segr

[Spastic gait analysis. Contribution of the motion lab].

Etienne-Jules Marey introduced gait motion analysis at the end of the XIXth century. It was rapidly adopted by clinicians and Charcot used it at the beginning of the XXth century in La Salpêtrière. Motion analysis was widely used after the first optoelectronic system was built by Furné in 1968. The optoelectronic system calculates the orientation of each body segment in the space after the determination of the space co-ordinates of cutaneous markers placed over them. It is particularly useful for spastic gait. Many disturbances of kinematics and kinetics have been described during spastic gait…

Vestibular testing abnormalities in individuals with motion sickness.

HYPOTHESIS: The goal of this study was to compare the results of vestibular testing in individuals with motion sickness to a group of control subjects. BACKGROUND: Studying motion sickness is difficult, because no animal model has been developed and symptoms rarely occur outside motion environments. Tests that can be performed in normal laboratory settings, which help to identify individuals with motion sickness, may be valuable in characterizing this disorder. METHODS: Twenty active duty military individuals with well-documented motion sickness were tested. The test battery included sinusoi…

Multisensory integration in speed estimation during self-motion.

This study assessed the relative contributions of visual and proprioceptive/motor information during self-motion in a virtual environment using a speed discrimination task. Subjects wore a head-mounted display and rode a stationary bicycle along a straight path in an empty, seemingly infinite hallway with random surface texture. For each trial, subjects were required to pedal the bicycle along two paths at two different speeds (a standard speed and a comparison speed) and subsequently report whether the second speed travelled was faster than the first. The standard speed remained the same whil…

Intraoperative measurement of lumbar spine motion segment stiffness.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective trial. OBJECTIVES: To test an intraoperative diagnostic tool to determine if it provided the surgeon with a safe, reproducible, accurate, quantitative measure of lumbar spine motion segment stability. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several devices have been developed to measure motion segment stiffness, however, few have been tested intraoperatively on humans, and none, to the best of the authors' knowledge have been tested as extensively as the device described in this study. Objective criteria, such as those provided by an intraoperative gauge, can be helpful in dete…

Functional neuroanatomy of biological motion perception in humans.

We used whole brain functional MRI to investigate the neural network specifically engaged in the recognition of "biological motion" defined by point-lights attached to the major joints and head of a human walker. To examine the specificity of brain regions responsive to biological motion, brain activations obtained during a "walker vs. non-walker" discrimination task were compared with those elicited by two other tasks: (i) non-rigid motion (NRM), involving the discrimination of overall motion direction in the same "point-lights" display, and (ii) face-gender discrimination, involving the disc…

Orthostatic intolerance and motion sickness after parabolic flight.

Because it is not clear that the induction of orthostatic intolerance in returning astronauts always requires prolonged exposure to microgravity, we investigated orthostatic tolerance and autonomic cardiovascular function in 16 healthy subjects before and after the brief micro- and hypergravity of parabolic flight. Concomitantly, we investigated the effect of parabolic flight-induced vomiting on orthostatic tolerance, R-wave-R-wave interval and arterial pressure power spectra, and carotid-cardiac baroreflex and Valsalva responses. After parabolic flight 1) 8 of 16 subjects could not tolerate 3

Motion coherence affects human perception and pursuit similarly.

Pursuit and perception both require accurate information about the motion of objects. Recovering the motion of objects by integrating the motion of their components is a difficult visual task. Successful integration produces coherent global object motion, while a failure to integrate leaves the incoherent local motions of the components unlinked. We compared the ability of perception and pursuit to perform motion integration by measuring direction judgments and the concomitant eye-movement responses to line-figure parallelograms moving behind stationary rectangular apertures. The apertures wer…

Paradoxical vocal fold motion: presentation and treatment options.

Paradoxical vocal fold motion is a rare disorder in which adduction of the folds occurs on inspiration. The disorder presents with signs of airway obstruction and often airway distress, so proper diagnosis by the otorhinolaryngologist is critical to subsequent management. We present a retrospective review of 10 patients with the diagnosis of paradoxical vocal fold motion seen over a 6-year period. Eight patients were females, and 6 required an acute airway intervention at presentation; 3 patients eventually underwent tracheotomy for respiratory decompensation. Six patients had a prior diagnosi…

Paradoxical vocal cord motion causing stridor after thyroidectomy.

Two women developed stridor immediately after thyroidectomy as a result of paradoxical vocal cord motion. In both cases the cord function showed a normal pattern during vocalisation but paradoxical movement was seen at laryngoscopy during tidal breathing. The abnormality improved in both patients over time with speech therapy. Whilst the syndrome of paradoxical vocal cord motion is classically thought to have a largely psychological aetiology, subtle interference with laryngeal innervation at surgery is more likely to have been the cause in these cases.

Perceptual learning in primary and secondary motion vision.

Specific improvements of perceptual capabilities with practise are thought to give some clues about cortical plasticity and the localisation of cortical processing. In the present study, perceptual learning is used as a paradigm to separate mechanisms underlying the perception of different classes of motion stimuli. Primary motion stimuli (phi-motion), are characterised by displacements of the luminance distribution. However, for secondary motion stimuli the movement is not accompanied by a corresponding luminance shift. Instead, moving objects are defined by their temporal frequency compositi…

Gastrointestinal motor and myoelectric correlates of motion sickness.

The objectives of this study were to characterize the digestive tract motor and myoelectric responses associated with motion sickness. Twenty-two cats (1.5-3.0 kg) were chronically implanted with force transducers and electrodes on the stomach and small intestine. Motion sickness was activated by vertical oscillation (VO) at +/-0.5 g and identified as salivation, licking, or vomiting. Vomiting was initiated chemically by UK-14304 (2.5-15 microg/kg iv) or CuSO4 (10-50 mg ig). We found that VO caused vomiting (45% of trials), a decrease in gastrointestinal (GI) motility (69% of trials), salivati…

Biceps activity during shoulder motion: an electromyographic analysis.

Electromyographic responses in 44 shoulders from 30 subjects were examined. Fourteen shoulders from 13 patients had documented rotator cuff … electromyographic activity normalized as a percent of maximal muscle contraction during 10 shoulder motions based on the scapular plane. Normal shoulders in all ranges of active motion exhibited significant supraspinatus activity (20%-50% maximum muscle contraction). The response followed patterns expected for a shoulder stabilizer. In contrast, with eve …

A classification scheme for paradoxical vocal cord motion.

Paradoxical vocal cord motion (PVCM) is characterized by the inappropriate adduction of the true vocal cords during inspiration. Multiple causes have been proposed for this group of disorders, which share the common finding of mobile vocal cords that adduct inappropriately during inspiration and cause stridor by approximation. Management of this group of disorders has been complicated by the lack of a classification scheme to include all types of PVCM. We propose that PVCM be classified according to its underlying etiology and recognize the following causes of the disorder: 1. brainstem compre…
