[Characteristics of motion sickness during prolonged otolith stimulation in anti-orthostatic position].

Thirty healthy volunteers were tested for an extended period of time (up to 4 hours) on modified parallel swings during a head-down tilt (-8 degrees) study. The pattern of motion sickness that developed in this situation was evaluated in terms of physiological parameters (electrocardiography, rheoencephalography, arterial pressure, respiration rate electrooculography, etc.), hormonal status, fluid-electrolyte balance, sensory function. The test subjects developed a vestibulo-hemodynamic syndrome that included vestibular disorders, spatial illusions, fluid displacement in the cranial direction,…

Conditioned taste aversion in humans using motion-induced sickness as the US.

The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and latent inhibition (LI) of CTA in humans using rotation-induced motion sickness as the unconditioned stimulus. To accomplish this, flavour familiarity (familiar vs unfamiliar) and rotation (rotation vs no rotation) were manipulated in a 2 X 2 factorial design. Subjects consumed either a familiarly flavoured carbonated beverage or a novel one after which half of each group was rotated or not rotated. Two hours later the subjects were re-presented with the flavoured drink that they had previously drunk. The grou…

Comparison of aerobic fitness and space motion sickness during the shuttle program.

Space motion sickness (SMS) is an important problem for short duration space flight and 71% of STS crewmembers develop symptoms. The search for effective countermeasures and factors that correlate with sensitivity has been extensive. Recently, several investigators have linked aerobic fitness with motion sickness sensitivity in the 1-G or high-G environment. This paper compares the aerobic fitness of 125 Shuttle crewmembers with their SMS symptom category. Aerobic fitness data were obtained from the exercise tolerance test (ETT) conducted nearest the time of launch. SMS data were derived from …

The vestibulo-ocular reflex and its possible roles in space motion sickness.

Prolonged exposure to an inappropriate vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) will usually lead to motion sickness, and it has been predicted on theoretical grounds that VOR gain may be decreased in weightlessness. While experiments during parabolic flight in aircraft tend to confirm this prediction, experiments during orbital spaceflight have led to apparently contradictory results. It is suggested that VOR gain is reduced initially, but that rapid compensatory mechanisms restore it to normal within minutes of reaching weightlessness. However, even though this process may lead to the rapid return of f…

Space motion sickness: etiological hypotheses and a proposal for diagnostic clinical examination.

The general notion that space motion sickness (SMS) is due to a "conflict" between vestibular, visual, and other sensory inputs has gained popular acceptance. We have reviewed three specific hypotheses for SMS and identified characteristic disorders of ocular motility that each hypothesis would predict. Accurate recording of horizontal and vertical eye movements during free head movements in space craft presents technical difficulties. We suggest that careful clinical examination may be useful, provided the examination is directed towards detecting those specific abnormalities predicted by eac…

Effects of some motion sickness suppressants on static and dynamic tracking performance.

Two studies examined the influence of three established antimotion sickness drugs on tracking performance in static (stationary) and dynamic (angular acceleration) conditions and on visual fixation ability during motion. In Study I, 40 young men were randomly assigned in equal numbers to either a control (lactose placebo), dimenhydrinate (50 mg), promethazine hydrochloride (25 mg), or mixture (25 mg promethazine plus 10 mg d-amphetamine) group. Study II used 30 new subjects equally divided into control, dimenhydrinate (100 mg), and promethazine (50 mg) groups. Following practice, tests were co…

Motion sickness caused by rotations about Earth-horizontal and Earth-vertical axes.

Rotation at constant angular velocity about the head's Z-axis, with the rotational axis horizontal (barbecue-spit rotation), causes motion sickness and illusory perceptions of bodily movement. To determine whether such rotations about the head's X- and Y-axes cause similar effects, and to test the validity of the mismatch theory of motion sickness, more than 200 tests (using vertical axes as well as horizontal axes) were administered to 14 subjects. Three different visual conditions were also investigated: normal external vision, vision of only the inside walls of the rotating capsule, and eye…

A sudden-stop vestibulovisual test for rapid assessment of motion sickness manifestations.

The test made use of a rotating chair mounted in a striped cylindrical enclosure, 4.6 m in diameter. The subject was exposed to the following motion profile: With eyes covered he was accelebrated at 15 degrees/s2 to clockwise volocity of 300 degrees/s and maintained at that velocity for 30 s. The chair was then decelerated to a stop within 1.5 s and maintained at rest for 30 s while physiological parameters and motion sickness symptoms were recorded. This procedure was repeated until a pre-selected motion sickness endpoint was reached or 20 stops had been made. If the endpoint was not reached,…

Motion sickness symptoms may be reduced by the Valsalva maneuver: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is a common complaint during most modes of travel. Several medications can be used to treat MS but are often accompanied by side-effects. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether performing the Valsalva manoeuvre can influence the subjective feeling of MS in healthy individuals. METHODS: We included 16 healthy participants (4 female) that underwent two sessions of MS induction through off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) using the Epley Omniax Chair. Participants were randomized to do the Valsalva manoeuvre during either their first or second rotation. We assessed MS sympto…

Efficacy and safety of tradipitant in motion sickness: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness affects up to 30% of the general population, yet the three pharmacological agents currently approved in the United States, dimenhydrinate, meclizine, and scopolamine carry significant sedative and cognitive liabilities and offer incomplete protection against vomiting. Tradipitant, a selective neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist, has been evaluated across three randomized controlled trials for motion sickness prevention, but no pooled quantitative synthesis of this evidence exists. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tradipitant versus placebo in adu…

On the potential of transauricular electrical stimulation to reduce visually induced motion sickness.

Perturbations in the autonomic nervous system occur in individuals experiencing increasing levels of motion sickness. Here, we investigated the effects of transauricular electrical stimulation (tES) on autonomic function during visually induced motion sickness, through the analysis of spectral and time-frequency heart rate variability. To determine the efficacy of tES, we compared sham and tES conditions in a randomized, within-subjects, cross-over design in 14 healthy participants. We found that tES reduced motion sickness symptoms by significantly increasing normalized high-frequency (HF) po…

The effect of migraine and motion sickness on symptoms evoked by the caloric vestibular test.

BACKGROUND: The caloric vestibular test (CVT) may evoke headache and vestibular symptoms in susceptible people. Patients with migraines have higher susceptibility to motion sickness. In migraines, impaired habituation to repetitive stimuli is a well-known interictal abnormality. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at evaluating CVT-evoked headache, nausea, vomiting, and imbalance in patients with and without migraine and/or motion sickness. METHODS: A retrospective data analysis was performed on 554 patients with a complaint of dizziness who underwent bithermal CVT at a tertiary referral center. …
