BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anti-IgLON5 disease is a recently described neurologic disease that shares features of autoimmunity and neurodegeneration. Abnormal movements appear to be frequent and important but have not been characterized and are underreported. We describe the frequency and types of movement disorders in a series of consecutive patients with this disease.
METHODS: In this retrospective, observational study, the presence and phenomenology of movement disorders were assessed with a standardized clinical questionnaire. Available videos were centrally reviewed by 3 experts in movem…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The scientific literature on COVID-19 is increasingly growing.
METHODS: In this paper, we review the literature on movement disorders in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
RESULTS: First, there are a variety of transient movement disorders that may manifest in the acute phase of COVID-19, most often myoclonus, with more than 50 patients described in the literature. New onset parkinsonism, chorea, and tic-like behaviours have also been reported. Movement disorders as a side effect after COVID-19 vaccination are rare, occurring with a frequency of 0.00002-0.0002 depe…

Movement Disorders: What Are You Doing? What Can We Do? Abstract. Disturbances of movement are common and varied. Frequent causes are systemic diseases such as Parkinson's syndromes and the essential tremor. Treatment options in practice and hospital include conservative, predominantly drug strategies such as oral administration of dopamine precursors or agonists, and pharmacological or non-pharmacological escalation strategies such as intramuscular botulinum toxin A injections, the subcutaneous or enteral drug pumps for apomorphine or levodopa and carbidopa, the effective deep brain stimulati…

Seizures and movement disorders (MDs) are distinct neurological conditions presenting with abnormal movements. Despite sharing an overlap in phenomenology, these movements have different origins. In order to explore the overlaps and the narrow boundaries between these two conditions, we performed a review of the literature to explore the risk of seizures in MDs. We discussed the mimics and chameleons including MDs that look like seizure (eg, paroxysmal dyskinesia, status dystonicus) and seizures that look like MDs (eg, epilepsia partialis continua, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy). Additionall…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether patients with functional movement disorders (FMDs) differ in their internal versus external locus of control (LOC) and whether LOC in these patients affected disease severity, quality of life, and functional impairment compared with control subjects with degenerative (Parkinson's disease) and nondegenerative (focal dystonia) neurological conditions.
METHODS: A total of 156 patients with FMD (N=45), Parkinson's disease (N=64), and focal dystonia (N=47) were recruited between June 2015 and August 2017. The authors administered the ge…

Behavioral phenotyping is a crucial step in validating animal models of human disease. Most traditional behavioral analyses rely on investigator observation of animal subjects, which can be confounded by inter-observer variability, scoring consistency, and the ability to observe extremely rapid, small, or repetitive movements. Force-Plate Actimeter (FPA)-based assessments can quantify locomotor activity and detailed motor activity with an incredibly rich data stream that can reveal details of movement unobservable by the naked eye. This report describes four specific examples of FPA analysis o

INTRODUCTION: Botulinum toxin injection is widely used for the treatment of laryngeal movement disorders. Electromyography-guided percutaneous injection is the technique most commonly used to perform intralaryngeal botulinum toxin injection.
OBJECTIVE: We describe an endoscopic approach for intralaryngeal botulinum toxin injection under local anaesthesia without using electromyography.
TECHNIQUE: A flexible video-endoscope with an operating channel is used. After local anaesthesia of the larynx by instillation of lidocaine, a flexible needle is inserted into the operating channel in order to…

Movement disorders are often genetically complex with genetic risk factors playing a major role. For example, monogenic causes of Parkinson's disease (PD) can be found in only 2-5% of patients who often have an early onset (<40 years). In the majority of patients, common genetic variants seem to contribute to the disease risk. To date, 24 genetic risk factors have been identified. For restless legs syndrome (RLS), six different risk variants have been reported but no monogenic cause is known yet. For the genetic risk factors of essential tremor and dystonia, which are less well studied, only f…

Modern functional neurosurgery for movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, tremor, and dystonia involves the placement of focal lesions or the application of deep brain stimulation (DBS) within circuits that modulate motor function. Precise targeting of these motor structures can be further refined by the use of electrophysiological approaches. In particular, microelectrode recordings enable the delineation of neuroanatomic structures. In the course of these operations, there is an opportunity not only to map basal ganglia structures but also to gain insights into how disturbances in n…

Precision medicine (PM) has been defined as "prevention and treatment strategies that take individual variability into account." Molecular imaging (MI) is an ideally suited tool for PM approaches to neurodegenerative dementia and movement disorders (MD). Here we review PM approaches and discuss how they may be applied to other associated neurodegenerative dementia and MD. With ongoing major therapeutic research initiatives that include the use of molecular imaging, we look forward to established interventions targeted to specific molecular pathophysiology and expect the potential benefit of MI…

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord demyelination can cause several movement disorders. Although these abnormal movements could be the presenting symptom of the disease and, at times, the major source of disability, they are often overlooked, mislabeled, or undertreated. The aims of this study were to clearly define and establish common terminology for spinal movement disorders (SMDs) and characterize their full spectrum in patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO).
METHODS: We chart reviewed 37 patients with NMO or NMO spectrum disorder. We classified spinal movement disorders under five categories: toni…

Timing abnormalities have been reported in many neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). In PD, motor-timing impairments are especially debilitating in gait. Despite impaired audiomotor synchronization, PD patients' gait improves when they walk with an auditory metronome or with music. Building on that research, we make recommendations for optimizing sensory cues to improve the efficacy of rhythmic cuing in gait rehabilitation. Adaptive rhythmic metronomes (that synchronize with the patient's walking) might be especially effective. In a recent study we showed that adaptive m
