The energy expenditure required by the respiratory muscles during exercise is a function of their work rate, cost of breathing, and efficiency. During exercise, ventilatory requirements increase further exacerbating the potential imbalance between inspiratory muscle load and capacity. High level of exercise intensity in conjunction with contracting respiratory muscles is the reason for respiratory muscle fatigue in healthy subjects. Available evidence would suggest that fatigue of the diaphragm and other respiratory muscles is an important mechanism involved in redistribution of blood flow. Re…

It is a well known fact that theophylline enhances the force of diaphragmatic contraction and delays fatigue. The action of caffeine which is a methylxanthine analogue on skeletal muscle are complex. It was claimed in few studies that the caffeine was more effective on the diaphragmatic contractility than the theophylline. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of theophylline and caffeine on the tension generated by fresh and fatigued diaphragmatic muscle. Studies were performed in vitro on diaphragmatic muscle strips of rats activated by electrical stimuli applied via the phrenic ne

A nine-year-old Japanese boy with low pyruvate decarboxylase activity in fibroblasts showed no central nervous symptoms except for muscle fatigue. The pyruvate decarboxylase activities in fibroblasts of the patient and two control subjects were 0.407 +/- 0.083, 1.029 +/- 0.137 and 1.607 +/- 0.096 mumoles/g protein/30 min, respectively. The Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) was the same in the patient and controls. There was no inhibitor of pyruvate decarboxylase in the patient's fibroblasts. A high fat diet has been given to the patient for five years. At present he does not complain of any kind …

The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-fatigue effects of Aralia continentalis kitagawa (AC) extract during exhaustive exercise of rats by forced swimming. Rats were subjected to forced swimming until exhausted after pre-treatment with AC extract for 21 days. Exhaustion time significantly increased in rats treated with AC extract. AC treatment also preserved blood homeostasis during fatigue due to exhaustive exercise. For fatigue-related serum biomarkers, AC extract significantly fail to decrease glucose and triglyceride (TG), but ameliorated increased lactate levels compared with levels

Skeletal muscle growth occurs in response to training with a wide range of loads, despite traditionally being linked to high-load resistance training and maximal strength development. A body of literature suggests that with lower loads, training near fatigue/task failure is an important stimulus for muscle growth. We consider that training-induced adaptations often improve performance in the specific activity that stimulated them (e.g., increased cardiac output and endurance exercise). Accordingly, we explore skeletal muscle growth as a compensatory adaptation to intense fatiguing exercise, po

At individual levels, however, it was possible to identify localized muscle fatigue and relate it to a specific work task. There were many short pauses with a duration of 1 to 2 seconds, but an almost total lack of pauses of a duration longer than five seconds.
CONCLUSIONS: Individual dental hygienists exhibited significant muscle …

Repeatedly performing a submaximal motor task for a prolonged period of time leads to muscle fatigue comprising a central and peripheral component, which demands a gradually increasing effort. However, the brain contribution to the enhancement of effort to cope with progressing fatigue lacks a complete understanding. The intermittent motor tasks (IMTs) closely resemble many activities of daily living (ADL), thus remaining physiologically relevant to study fatigue. The scope of this study is therefore to investigate the EEG-based brain activation patterns in healthy subjects performing IMT unti…

BACKGROUND: Cytochrome oxidase-deficient mitochondrial myopathies represent a heterogeneous group of muscle disorders. Physical stress can cause life-threatening risks related to rhabdomyolysis or respiratory compromise.
CASE: A 21-year-old primigravida with cytochrome C oxidase-deficient mitochondrial myopathy who presented for obstetric care at 8 weeks' gestation complained of muscle fatigue and spasm after exertion. The increased metabolic demands of pregnancy led to worsening pain, muscle fatigue, and ultimately complete immobility.
CONCLUSION: Cytochrome oxidase-deficient mitochondrial …

The physical demands and combative nature of rugby lead to notable levels of muscle damage. In professional rugby, athletes only have a limited timeframe to recover following training sessions and competition. Through the implementation of recovery strategies, sport scientists, practitioners and coaches have sought to reduce the effect of fatigue and allow athletes to recover faster. Although some studies demonstrate that recovery strategies are extensively used by rugby athletes, the research remains equivocal concerning the efficacy of recovery strategies in rugby. Moreover, given the role o

BACKGROUND: When recommending avoidance of static stretching prior to athletic performance, authors and practitioners commonly refer to available systematic reviews. However, effect sizes (ES) in previous reviews were extracted in major part from studies lacking control conditions and/or pre-post testing designs. Also, currently available reviews conducted calculations without accounting for multiple study outcomes, with ES: -0.03 to 0.10, which would commonly be classified as trivial.

INTRODUCTION: Wrestling demands high-intensity competition, and tournament structures often require athletes to compete in multiple matches in a single day. This results in accumulated neuromuscular fatigue that may disrupt the balance between hamstring and quadriceps strength, potentially increasing the risk of knee injuries. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the conventional hamstring-quadriceps ratio (H: QConv) and functional hamstring-quadriceps ratio (H: QFunc) are more indicative in resting and post-fatigue states, examine the H: QConv and H: QFunc isokinetic strength rati

A long-term paraplegic man presented exclusively (>99%) myosin heavy chain I (MHC I) in the tibialis anterior muscle (TA). This was coupled to a slow speed of contraction, a high resistance to fatigue, and a rapid resynthesis of phosphocreatine after an electrically evoked fatiguing contraction when compared with the TA muscles of 9 other paraplegic individuals. In contrast, the MHC composition of his vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles was that expected of a muscle from a spinal cord injured individual. This information may be of clinical importance in terms of the expected mo

PURPOSE: Despite its susceptibility to muscle fatigue, combined neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and blood flow restriction (BFR) are effective regimens for managing muscle atrophy when traditional resistance exercises are not feasible. This study investigated the potential of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in reducing muscle fatigue after the application of combined NMES and BFR.
METHODS: Thirty-six healthy adults were divided into control and LLLT groups. The LLLT group received 60 J of 850-nm wavelength LLLT before a training program of combined NMES and BFR of the nondominant e…

Zidovudine-induced myopathy is characterized by reversible muscle weakness, wasting, myalgia, fatigue, and elevated creatine kinase (CK). Some zidovudine-treated patients with normal muscle strength experience excessive fatigue, myalgia, or transient mild CK elevations that improve when zidovudine is stopped. To determine the cause of these symptoms, we studied 13 physically fit, HIV-infected men who developed fatigue, myalgia, and reduced endurance, while taking zidovudine for a mean period of 20 months (2-39 months), with neurological evaluation and muscle biopsy processed for enzyme histoch
