This study reviews the occurrence and most common health effect of exposure to moulds in different environment. The short characteristic of chosen toxigenic fungi and the major mycotoxin classes was also presented. Exposure to allergens may cause human disease, including allergic rhinitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis asthma and sick building syndrome. The Aspergillus nidulans putative mitogen-activated protein kinase encoded by mpkB has a role in natural product biosynthesis. An mpkB mutant exhibited a decrease in sterigmatocystin gene expression and low mycotoxin levels. This study indicates the association of a mycotoxin (aflatoxin B1) with Reye's syndrome. The presence of aflatoxin B1 in livers from 4 girls and 1 boy aged from 3 to 11 months was detected using two different techniques: a) direct chemical titration of aflatoxin B1 in liver extracts; and b) fluorescence microscopy of unstained liver sections. Our results suggest the existence of acute intoxication by aflatoxin in these children.
