Furunculoid myiasis in a dog caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga.

Two days after returning with its owners from a 60-day visit to Liberia, an 8-year-old 6.5-kg spayed female Miniature Schnauzer was examined by a veterinarian in the United States. A 1.0 x 1.0-cm raised erythematous nodule was noticed on the medial aspect of the right pinna. In the center of the nodule was a 1.0 x 1.0-mm pore from which a 0.5 x 0.5 x 1.0-cm white larva was extracted. The larva was identified as a third-stage larva of Cordylobia anthropophaga, the African Tumbu fly, a fly restricted to sub-Saharan Africa. Cordylobia anthropophaga does have zoonotic potential, but the owners did

Vile bodies: an endoscopic approach to nasal myiasis.

Nasal myiasis is the infestation of the nasal cavities by larvae (maggots) of Diptera flies. Several species of flies deposit their ova in the nose and the larvae feed on the host's tissues. We present a case of nasal myiasis by larvae of Oestrus ovis--Sheep Nasal Bot Fly. The larvae of Oestrus ovis are well known parasites in the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses of sheep and goat. In Britain very rarely larvae may be deposited in the eye, nostrils or outer ear of man, usually husbandry workers. Reputedly, the larvae never survive beyond the first stage with acute catarrhal symptoms lastin…

[Myiasis of the scalp--an incidental finding in ambulatory surgery].

Because of the increase of travels to tropical countries the physician in Germany is more often confronted with parasitic tropical diseases. In an apparently routine case a 28 year old patient suffered from infected stitches of the scalp, caused by an unknown insect, after returning from Sri Lanka. Four larvae of Dermatobia hominis, which causes the cutaneous myiasis, were found into the pyogenic furuncles and were removed by surgical approach.

Human myiasis caused by Phormia regina in Pennsylvania.

A case of human myiasis caused by the black blowfly, P. regina, has been presented. Although various reports have documented the therapeutic effects of maggot infestation, infection and mortality by gas-forming anaerobic organisms also have been reported. The removal of maggots from a wound can be accomplished using various methods. The authors successfully used topical application of dichlorotetrafluoroethane.

[A case of skin myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis].

A case of erysipelas-like symptoms in a 26-year-old female student of medicine having returned from Nicaragua to Germany is reported. On the removal of the scurf covering the supposed entrance of the erysipelas, a larva of Dermatobia hominis, the human bot fly, was extracted from the head skin, and the inflammation completely disappeared within a short period of time.

Intracranial myiasis by Hypoderma bovis (Linnaeus) in a horse.

Acute neurologic disease associated with intracranial migration of a first instar larva of a warble fly, Hypoderma bovis (Linnaeus), was observed in a 14-year-old Quarter Horse gelding in western Montana. The disease was characterized by incoordination of gait, circling to the left, head tilt to the right, partial paralysis of the right side of the face, and impaired vision in the right eye. Two and one-half hours after it was first noticed sick, the horse collapsed and was euthanized. Massive hemorrhage unaccompanied by necrosis or significant cellular response was present in the right side o
