Examination of Appendiceal Neoplasms-A Retrospective, Single-Centre, Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal neoplasms are rare, but recent data indicate a rising trend, particularly in patients under the age of 50. These tumours are often diagnosed incidentally during histopathological examination. This study has aimed to examine the incidence and histological subtypes of appendiceal neoplasms in a Southern Hungarian population. METHODS: Our study included neoplastic appendix specimens processed at the University of Szeged between 2014 and 2023. RESULTS: Neoplasms were identified in 71 cases from 3640 appendectomies (1.9%). Benign lesions were present in 37% of cases (n = 2

Endobiliary metastasis of colorectal cancer: A rare presentation and diagnostic dilemma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy with liver metastases frequently encountered. However, endobiliary metastases are extremely rare and can pose significant diagnostic challenges as they can mimic primary biliary tumors. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a 66-year-old female who underwent an extended right hemicolectomy for a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon pT4aN1bM0. Two years after surgery, follow-up imaging revealed intrahepatic biliary dilation and subtle intraductal lesions, along with suspicious splenic nodules. Hepatic MRI confirmed the pres

Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Mandible: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MCs) are rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms of the head and neck region. They originate either primarily from preexisting cartilage or secondarily from Paget's disease and fibrous dysplasia. In the head and neck region, the larynx, maxilla, and nasal cavity are the most common sites. Mandibular chondrosarcoma is quite rare. On CT scan, it appears as a lobulated mass containing a chondroid matrix. Adequate tissue sampling is essential for accurate histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis with its mimickers. The prognosis of MC is c

Binocular Diplopia: An Unusual Presentation of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung.

Here, we discuss the case of a 72-year-old male with a known history of COPD who presented with one month of binocular diplopia and headache. The initial clinical investigation discovered destructive intraosseous lesions within the sellar and para-sellar (SPS) regions, suggesting primary versus metastatic intracranial lesions. Further examination revealed a mass in the right lung, with subsequent biopsy confirming squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung as the primary site of malignancy. The SPS regions of the basicranium, while well-documented to be associated with various primary neoplasms

Mixed Adenocarcinoid Tumor Presenting as Acute Appendicitis.

Mixed adenocarcinoid tumors are not uncommon neoplasms of appendix. The clinical presentation of these tumors is often similar to that of acute appendicitis or may present as asymptomatic. These tumors are found incidentally during histopathological examination of the resected appendix following appendectomy or other abdominal procedures. Mixed adenocarcinoids usually behave as adenocarcinomas with rapid metastasis, so prognosis depends upon how aggressive the tumor behaves. The present study reports a case of a 53-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain and fever for 1 day and underwe

WAVEs: a novel and promising weapon in the cancer therapy tool box.

The Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein family Verprolin--homologous proteins (WAVEs), encoded by a metastasis promoter gene, play considerable roles in adhesion of immune cells, cell proliferation, migration and destruction of foreign agents by reactive oxygen species. These diverse functions have lead to the hypothesis that WAVE proteins have multi-functional roles in regulating cancer invasiveness, metastasis, development of tumor vasculature and angiogenesis. Differentials in expression of WAVE proteins are associated with a number of neoplasms include colorectal cancer, hepatocellular cancer

Monoarthritis secondary to joint metastasis. Two case reports and literature review.

Synovial metastases from neoplasms are uncommon. We report two cases of knee monoarthritis due to joint metastasis. Joint fluid cytology established the diagnosis. In one patient, an epidermoid carcinoma of the ureter metastasized to the left knee. The other patient had chronic monoarthritis of the left knee unresponsive to conventional treatment and was found to have distal femoral metastases from a lung adenocarcinoma. Only 28 cases of synovial metastases from solid tumors have been reported in the literature. The knee is the most common target, the lung the most common site of the primary (

Case report: primary carcinoid tumor of the testicle without metastases in combination with testicular atrophy and testosterone deficiency.

The first case of testicular carcinoid was represented as an element of a benign cystic teratoma by Simon et al. J Urol 1954; 72: 892-894. It is a rare disease accounting for less than 1% of all testicular neoplasms. We report a case of carcinoid of the testis without carcinoid syndrome and metastasis but with testosterone deficiency based on a bilateral testicular atrophy, which has not been previously reported.

Thyroid cancer: A case of parapharyngeal extension.

Thyroid cancer is frequently encountered in clinical settings. However, its metastasis to the parapharyngeal space is exceedingly uncommon, comprising only 0 to 5 % of head and neck neoplasms. This case report highlights the extension of papillary thyroid cancer to the parapharyngeal space, its treatment, and outcome. If a mass is observed in the parapharyngeal region on imaging, clinicians should contemplate the likelihood of thyroid cancer and rule it out as a potential diagnosis.

Ureteral Haemangiosarcoma in a Dog: Rare Primary Tumour With Unusual Metastasis to the Contralateral Kidney.

A dog (neutered male, 11 years old, Labrador retriever) underwent abdominal ultrasound, which revealed a 7 cm diameter tumour (caudal region of the left kidney). The animal showed symptoms of weight loss, apathy, haematuria, and abdominal pain. A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the presence of a tumour originating from the ureter. Following surgery to remove the ureter with the attached kidney, a histopathological examination was performed. The tumour was classified as a haemangiosarcoma. After the initial recovery, 2 months after surgery, the dog was diagnosed with a tumour in the oth

Clear cell renal cancer metastasis - A case of delayed diagnosis.

Renal cell carcinoma represents about 90% of all primary renal neoplasms. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma is the most common histological type, characterized by an aggressive clinical course due to its tendency to metastasize. Metastases are typically diagnosed on average 5 years after oncological surgery. Compared to metastasis to other organs, pancreatic metastases are rare. We present a case of clear cell renal carcinoma metastasis to the pancreas and liver, diagnosed 23 years after nephrectomy during the investigation of portal hypertension findings. Evaluating the late recurrence of clear

Myoid gonadal stromal tumor: A rare testicular sex cord stromal neoplasm - a case report and review of the literature.

Myoid gonadal stromal tumor (MGST) is an exceptionally rare benign testicular sex cord-stromal neoplasm with limited published experience. We report a 30-year-old man presenting with a painless right testicular mass and normal serum tumor markers. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a small enhancing intratesticular lesion suspicious for malignancy. Radical inguinal orchiectomy was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation was consistent with MGST, showing spindle-cell proliferation with diffuse smooth muscle actin, S100, and vimentin positivity an

Unresectable Metastatic Solid Pseudopapillary Pancreatic Neoplasm Treated With Liver Transplantation.

We present a 49-year-old woman requiring living donor liver transplantation after liver metastasis from a pancreatic solid pseudopapillary tumor. After identifying a pancreatic mass and liver lesions, she underwent extensive surgical resection. Pathology revealed a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the head and body of the pancreas, extending into the peripancreatic soft tissues and confirmed to have spread to the liver. Subsequently, she underwent adjuvant chemotherapy and radiofrequency ablations of the new liver lesions. Despite immunotherapy and chemotherapy, there was a progression of the

Refractory Pneumothorax Due to Cystic Pulmonary Metastasis of a Lowgrade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma: A Case Report.

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LG-ESS) is a rare uterine neoplasm. Computed tomography (CT) revealed the presence of multiple small bilateral pulmonary nodules in a 58-year-old woman 1 year after surgery for LG-ESS; the clinical diagnosis was pulmonary metastasis. Hormone therapy with progesterone was initiated, after which most of the solid nodules disappeared and some transformed into cystic lesions. Seven years after hormone therapy, the patient experienced repeated pneumothorax. The cause of the pneumothorax was perforation of a metastatic focus within the wall of a small subpleura

A Rare Co-existent Case of Splenic Microfilariasis and Pancreatic Solid Pseudopapillary Epithelial Neoplasm - A Double Jeopardy!

Filariasis is a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical countries like India with Wuchereria bancrofti accounting for 90% of lymphatic filariasis. Rarely observed are extra lymphatic manifestations caused by interaction of immune system with microfilaria and their diffusible products. Among various organs involved, splenic involvement is a rare extra lymphatic manifestation of filariasis and can masquerade clinicoradiologically as metastasis when associated with a known malignancy or as a primary malignancy like lymphoma. Hereby, we present an unusual case of coincidence of spl

Unusual Metastatic Sites in Malignant Phyllodes Tumor Detected on FDG PET/CT.

Phyllodes tumor is a rare fibroepithelial neoplasm of the breast. This tumor tends to spread by hematogenous route, with common metastatic sites in the lungs, bones, and liver. Metastases to the pleura, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, and adrenal gland are rare. We present a case of a 52-year-old lady with malignant phyllodes tumor of breast undergone local tumor resection, followed by solitary lung metastasis with lobectomy, and subsequently diagnosed of multiple new metastatic sites in pleura, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal gland, and bone detected on 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose positro

Enhanced Computed Tomography and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in the Uncommon Histiocytic Sarcoma of Small Intestine Arising after Gastric Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an extremely rare and aggressive malignant neoplasm of hematopoietic origin that shows morphologic and immunophenotypic evidence of histiocytic differentiation. In approximately 25% of the cases, presumed transdifferentiation of a preexisting hematolymphoid disorder can be demonstrated. Various extranodal sites, particularly the gastrointestinal tract, soft tissue, skin, and spleen, can be involved. Enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings of extranodal histiocytic sarcoma have been barely reported. We present a case with extranodal HS originating in the small intestine

Metastatic mesonephric-like endometrial adenocarcinoma diagnosed on transbronchial needle aspirate cytology.

Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma is a relatively rare neoplasm with morphology similar to mesonephric adenocarcinoma but unassociated with mesonephric remnants. Its relatively recent description and rarity make it difficult to diagnose, but it has a high rate of distant metastasis, making distinction from endometrioid carcinoma important. Descriptions of its cytologic features are particularly limited. We describe a case of mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma diagnosed on transbronchial needle aspiration of the lung, that had been misdiagnosed as endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma on a prior h

Intrapancreatic accessory spleen: an enigmatic entity.

Solitary hypervascular lesion in the distal body/tail of pancreas in a patient with non-specific abdominal symptoms is a diagnostic challenge. Neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) and metastasis from renal cell carcinoma are the most common differentials and intrapancreatic accessory spleen (IPAS) is the rarest of its differential diagnosis. We present, here, a case of a 56-year-old man with a space-occupying lesion in body/tail of pancreas that was preoperatively diagnosed as a NEN based on elevated chromogranin levels and hyperenhancing lesion on contrast-enhanced CT scan. He underwent a spleen-pre

Malignant melanoma presenting as amelanotic caruncular lesion in a child.

Conjunctival melanoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that can present in childhood in any part of the conjunctiva. The infrequency with which conjunctival melanoma is encountered in childhood caruncular lesions makes it a formidable but important aspect of the differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with a left caruncular lesion. On histopathologic analysis, the lesion was determined to be BRAF-negative invasive melanoma arising in association with melanocytic nevus. The melanoma was excised using no-touch technique and double freeze thaw cryotherapy. A full
