This article provides an update on photodynamic therapy by discussing each of the essential components in sequence: mechanisms of action, common photosensitizers, typical light sources, and indications. In dermatology, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is mainly used in the treatment of superficial skin cancers: actinic keratoses, Bowen's disease and superficial basal cell carcinomas. Basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis as a carcinoma in situ and squamous cell carcinoma are classified as non-melanoma epithelial skin cancers. These forms of skin cancer are thought to be the most common cancers worldwide with rising incidences. In the past years new insights into the pathogenesis of non-melanoma skin cancers have been gained. Through knowledge of the pathologic pathways, new treatment options have become available. This review summarizes the recent advantages of treatment options of non-melanoma skin cancer.

Epidermoid carcinoma, that is, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, is the most common malignant tumor of the lips. It occurs especially in men. Its primary causes are sun exposure, smoking, and chronic irritation. Leukoplakia is the most frequent precancerous lesion. Epidermoid carcinoma may appear clinically as a scaly erosion or an ulceration. Standard treatment is surgical excision with reconstruction.

Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are the most commonly occurring malignancies in the United States, with over 1 million cases annually. Several subsets of patients within the general population are particularly susceptible to the development of basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. These groups include patients with xeroderma pigmentosum, basal cell nevus syndrome, epidermodysplasia verruciformis, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia as well as organ transplant recipients. OBJECTIVE: To develop a tumor (T) staging system for BCC that will predict metastasis/death and compare its performance with that of the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition (AJCC8) T-staging system.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Although skin cancer is less common in persons of color than in Caucasians, the rates of morbidity and mortality associated with skin cancer often are significantly greater in darker-skinned ethnic groups. Under 10% of gynaecological cancers are diagnosed in the vulva and vagina, mostly squamous cell carcinomas. Melanoma, Paget disease, basal cell carcinomas, and other cancers can present with vulval/vaginal symptoms. Studies of basal cell carcinoma have been hindered by a lack of a suitable and reproducible tissue-culture model system. We have succeeded in growing this tumor in primary culture from eight different patients. We can separate and grow the tumor cells and the stromal cell component. We also culture normal keratinocytes and fibroblasts from the same patient for comparative studies. All the cell types have been subcultured four to five times and cryopreserved. The normal keratinocytes were indistinguishable from the tumor cells in ploidy, in rate of growth, and in the failure to express ICAM-1.

Beneficial effects of oral retinoids in prophylaxis of epithelial neoplasias have been demonstrated by experimental works.
