Myopericytoma in urinary bladder: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Myopericytoma is reported to occur mainly in the skin and superficial soft tissue of the extremities. In contrast, occurrence in the urinary bladder is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 75-year-old Japanese man who developed a submucosal tumor at the right trigone of his bladder that led to interference with the discharge of right ureteral calculus. No invasive growth was observed by magnetic resonance imaging. Transurethral resection was successfully performed; histopathological analysis revealed perivascular proliferation of spindle-shaped to oval-shaped, cytologi

Complete resection of a large phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour by chest wall resection and reconstruction.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour is an extremely rare mesenchymal neoplasm of bone or soft tissue. It is associated with paraneoplastic oncogenic osteomalacia through secretion of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) which inhibits renal proximal tubule phosphate re-uptake. We report a case of a 36-year-old woman with a large chest wall tumour completely excised by extensive chest wall resection and reconstruction with polypropylene mesh-methylmethacrylate composite and pedicled muscle flaps.

The risks and benefits of radiotherapy with massive endoprosthetic replacement.

Between 1966 and 2001, 1254 patients underwent excision of a bone tumour with endoprosthetic replacement. All patients who had radiotherapy were identified. Their clinical details were retrieved from their records. A total of 63 patients (5%) had received adjunctive radiotherapy, 29 pre-operatively and 34 post-operatively. The mean post-operative Musculoskeletal Tumor Society scores of irradiated patients were significantly lower (log-rank test, p = 0.009). The infection rate in the group who had not been irradiated was 9.8% (117 of 1191), compared with 20.7% (6 of 29) in those who had pre-ope

Malignant perivascular epithelioid cell tumor ('PEComa'): a case report and literature review of cutaneous/subcutaneous presentations.

Perivascular epithelioid cell (PEC) tumors, also called 'PEComas,' are distinct tumors showing PEC differentiation with characteristic histologic and immunophenotypic features. PEComas are rare tumors documented in the literature presenting in numerous anatomic sites including the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, soft tissue and skin. Criteria for malignancy does not exist for the subset of PEComas that pursue an aggressive clinical course. Herein, we present an unusual case of a malignant PEC tumor presenting as a scalp nodule in a patient with a prior diagnosis of 'melanoma' based upon the immunophe

[Cartilaginous tumors in children].

For the last 15 years, 44 cartilaginous bone tumors had been treated in children aging from 2 to 15 years. 80% were chondromas, either isolated (27), or multiples in enchondromata (9). Treatment varied from simple biopsy to extensive excision with cancellous bone graft. Two of these patients experienced postoperative recurrence but have been cured by another surgical excision. One chondromyxoid fibroma of the big toe and 2 chondroblastomas of the femur had been treated by excision with no recurrence. Three young boys (mean age 5 years) who had a metachondromatosis with chondromas of the extrem

Elastofibroma: management and surgical outcome.

Elastofibroma is a benign slow-growing neoplasm of soft tissues, originally defined Elastofibroma dorsi because of the typical localization in the connective tissue placed between the bottom corner of the scapula and the chest wall. From 1990 to 2013 at our center, 115 patients underwent elestofibroma surgical removal, including 2 bilateral and one relapsed. For all the patients ultrasound preoperative examination was requested, sometimes with a diagnosis of lipoma or fibrolipoma because of the rarity of this type of lesion and therefore the lack of experience of the radiologists. In all 115 p

Benign perivascular myoid cell tumor (myopericytoma) of the urinary tract: a report of 2 cases with an emphasis on differential diagnosis.

Myopericytoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm thought to comprise part of a spectrum of perivascular myoid cell neoplasms with myofibroma, angioleiomyoma, and glomus tumor. We describe 2 such neoplasms involving the urinary tract: 1 incidentally identified in the kidney of a 59-year-old woman and 1 in the urinary bladder of a 52-year-old woman who presented with urinary frequency and dysuria. Histologically, the bladder tumor was composed of numerous blood vessels surrounded by plump perivascular myoid cells, as in subcutaneous myopericytoma. The renal tumor showed similar morphology centrall

Cutaneous Metaplastic Synovial Cyst: Case Report and Literature Review from the Dermatological Point of View.

Cutaneous metaplastic synovial cysts (CMSCs) are rare tumors typically comprising a solitary, well-circumscribed cystic mass that is not connected to the joint. Synovial cysts have been reported predominantly by orthopedists or pathologists; however, the presence of CMSC is not generally well recognized by dermatologists. Herein, we report a CMSC in a 68-year-old woman receiving systemic corticosteroid therapy for the treatment of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). We attempt to delineate the clinical characteristics of this unusual neoplasm by reviewing the literature, focu

Burden of Disease in Pediatric Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: A Literature Review.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an ultra-rare, paraneoplastic syndrome caused by tumors secreting fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). In children, TIO may be mistaken for more common causes of rickets and osteomalacia, including monogenic forms, leading to long diagnostic delays. This review aimed to identify evidence on the diagnostic journey and burden of TIO in pediatric patients. A literature review was conducted to identify publications reporting disease characteristics, investigations, treatments, and clinical outcomes in pediatric patients diagnosed with TIO. In total, 41 studies w

Exploring the Role of FGF7 in Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia. Clinic-Pathologic Analysis in a Patient with a Sino-Nasal Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an ultrarare paraneoplastic syndrome due to the overproduction of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23). Although other phosphate-regulating substances (i.e., "phosphatonins") have been demonstrated to be expressed in tumors associated with TIO, very limited information is available about their circulating levels and clinical significance. Here, we report a patient with a long-standing history of low serum phosphate values due to a sino-nasal phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT), in which the co-expression of FGF23 and FGF7 was detected in the neoplastic tissu

Lung adenocarcinoma discovered during the follow-up of lung-dominant connective tissue disease: a case report and literature review.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) can lead to lung cancer, which brings great challenges to differential diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. However, the clinical features of lung-dominant connective tissue disease (LD-CTD) related ILD combined with lung cancer has not been validated. We report the case of an 80-year-old woman with LD-CTD treated regularly with nintedanib who presented progressive dyspnoea and hypoxemia after recurrent viral infections. Her chest computed tomography (CT) showed aggravated interstitial fibrosis in both lower lungs with moderate right pleural effusion. Clinicia

Tumor-induced Osteomalacia: A Systematic Review and Individual Patient's Data Analysis.

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, usually caused by small, benign, and slow-growing phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors. Clinically, TIO is characterized by renal phosphate leak, causing hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. This review was performed to assess the clinical characteristics of TIO patients described worldwide so far. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: On June 26, 2021, a systematic search was performed in Medline, Google Scholar, Google book, and Cochrane Library using the terms: "tumor induced osteomalacia," "oncogenic osteomalacia," "hypophosphatemia."

A Challenging Case of Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: Pathophysiological and Clinical Implications.

We investigated the usefulness of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) intraoperative assay to monitor tumor resection in patients with oncogenic osteomalacia. A 33-year-old man with 5 years' history of lumbar and pelvis pain together with multiple vertebral fractures was admitted to our hospital. He was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis 1 year before. Laboratory investigation showed low tubular reabsorption of phosphate (0.41 mmol/L) despite chronic hypophosphatemia (0.39/L). Increased plasma values of FGF23 (673 pg/mL; n.v. < 95 pg/mL) were also observed. A full-body CT scan showed two su

Thymus in experimental carcinogenesis of the prostate gland.

We studied structural changes in the prostate gland, thymus, and lymph nodes in CBA mice after transplantation of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells into the prostate gland. On experimental day 5, the number of blood and lymph vessels decreased in the gland; the percentage of connective tissue elements and glandular tissue and the number of immunoblasts in the thymus increased. On day 18, the number of blood vessels in the tumor decreased; the width of the cortex and glandular tissue increased in the thymus, while the number of immunoblasts was reduced. On day 28, tumor infiltration and increased num

Lipoatrophic panniculitis of the ankles in childhood: differential diagnosis with subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma.

We describe the clinical, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings in an additional case of lipoatrophic panniculitis selectively involving the ankles in a 12-year-old boy. This idiopathic, rarely reported entity is presumed to have an autoimmune pathogenesis. Histological findings are a lipophagic lobular panniculits, that in our case featured focally increased numbers of lymphocytes rimming the adipocytes, and infiltration of vascular walls by mildly atypical lymphoid cells, raising the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma.

A histochemical comparison of methylene-blue/acid fuchsin with hematoxylin and eosin for differentiating calcification of stromal tissue.

Benign and malignant connective tissue tumors consist of a fibrous component that contains varying amounts of one or more types of bone or other calcified tissue. Diagnosis of these connective tissue tumors often poses challenges for pathologists, because it is difficult to differentiate the organic matrix of osteoid from hyalinized stroma. To establish a definitive diagnosis, it sometimes is advantageous to demonstrate histologically by special staining either the type of calcification or the presence or absence of calcification. We compared the efficacy of methylene blue-acid fuchsin (MB-AF)

Design and synthetic considerations of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors.

Experimental evidence confirms that the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a fundamental role in a wide variety of pathologic conditions that involve connective tissue destruction including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, tumor metastasis and angiogenesis, corneal ulceration, multiple sclerosis, periodontal disease, and atherosclerosis. Modulation of MMP regulation is possible at several biochemical sites, but direct inhibition of enzyme action provides a particularly attractive target for therapeutic intervention. Hypotheses concerning inhibition of specific MMP(s) with respect to
