Thymic epithelial neoplasms are morphologically diverse and can pose a diagnostic challenge that is complicated by a lack of immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers that are entirely sensitive and specific for thymic epithelium. Polyclonal PAX8 is often used in this context, but it is not a specific marker. The PAX1 transcription factor shares significant homology with PAX8 and plays an integral role in thymic development in humans and murine models. This study evaluated the role of PAX1 IHC in differentiating thymic epithelial neoplasms from morphologic mimics on whole slide tissue sections. The P

Gestational trophoblastic tumors can be difficult to distinguish from nongestational neoplasms. Somatic and germ cell tumors can mimic gestational choriocarcinoma, and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is known for its histologic, and sometimes clinical, resemblance to squamous cell carcinoma. Short tandem repeat (STR) analysis can separate gestational from nongestational neoplasms and can provide useful information about the type of causative conceptus. We present a series of cases which demonstrate the utility of STR analysis in the evaluation of gestational choriocarcinoma, epithelioid

Pulmonary Aspergillus infection may have a variety of manifestations depending on the patients' immunity status and pre-existing lung conditions. Radiographically, aspergilloma, which is usually associated with noninvasive Aspergillus fumigatus conidia, may feature a characteristic mass in a cavity commonly located in the upper lobes of the lung. It is typically encountered upon pre-existing lung damage. Here we report Aspergillus growing in a pulmonary metastatic cavity in a 47-year-old male worker with a history of tongue cancer after a radical operation with neck dissection and concurrent c

BACKGROUND: Combined thymic carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm of the thymus recently added to the 4th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the lung, pleura, thymus and heart. It involves at least one type of thymic carcinoma and another thymic epithelial tumor. The previously used term "combined thymic epithelial tumor" has been abandoned.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present an unusual case of combined thymic carcinoma of the thymus in a 44-year-old male who had suffered from fever, chest pain, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Magnetic resonance i

PURPOSE: The NAB2::STAT6 fusion is predominantly associated with solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) and is utilized in diagnosing SFTs through nuclear STAT6 protein overexpression. Recent studies expanded the phenotypic spectrum of NAB2::STAT6 rearranged neoplasms, including adamantinoma-like and teratocarcinosarcoma-like phenotypes. We report a case of a NAB2::STAT6 rearranged epithelial tumor exhibiting sebaceous differentiation in the parotid gland.
METHODS: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA), histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular studies of this case were described.
RESULTS: Fine-nee

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) occur primarily in the small intestine, lung, and pancreas. Due to their rarity compared to other malignancies in these organs, their complex biology remains poorly understood, including their oncogenesis, tumor composition, and the intriguing phenomena of mixed neuroendocrine non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNEN). Here, we profiled ten low-grade small intestine NET (SiNET) samples as well as one mixed lung tumor by single-cell or single-nuclei RNA-seq. We find that SiNETs are largely separated into two distinct subtypes, in which the neuroendocrine cells upregulate

BACKGROUND: While it is not uncommon in patients with head and neck cancer to present with multiple metachronous primary neoplasms, rarely do these present as a singular mass composed of intertwined, histologically distinct malignant tumors. Sometimes referred to as collision tumors, these entities are poorly understood and only appear in a handful of case studies in the literature.
CASE REPORT: Here we present a 58-year-old male diagnosed with a human papillomavirus-related collision tumor consisting of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, as well as

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has been reported in association with other types of cutaneous neoplasms within the same lesion, including squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen's disease, actinic keratosis, follicular cysts, trichoblastoma and lentigo maligna, among others. However, the association of MCC and sweat gland tumors has never been described in the literature. We report two unique cases of MCC that developed within cutaneous poromas. A 56-year-old male (Patient 1) and an 81-year-old female (Patient 2) presented with nodules on the upper arm and lower back, respectively. Histopathologic study o

BACKGROUND: Thymic carcinoma is a rare mediastinal neoplasm with a high malignant potential. It often shows pleural invasion and distant metastasis. The metastasis of thymic carcinoma to the small intestine is rarely reported and difficult to distinguish from other gastrointestinal tract tumors.
CASE PRESENTATION: An elderly man presented with lower abdominal pain for 2 months. Abdominal CT showed a mass communicated with the small intestinal lumen. After radical resection of the small intestinal tumor, resected specimens showed moderately differentiated squamous-cell carcinoma with lymph nod

Primary vaginal cancer represents only 1% to 2% of malignant neoplasm of the female genital tract. Here, we report a 68-year-old woman who showed a vaginal tumor extending to urethra and clitoris, a 10 cm-sized mass in left adnexa and multiple metastases in lung and liver. Vaginal biopsy showed squamous cell carcinoma of vagina and she was diagnosed as International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IVB vaginal cancer. Palliative surgery including left salpingectomy, tumorectomy, and clitoris mass excision was performed. Concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) with six cycles of 5

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is a rare neoplasm, often unsuspected clinically due to its rarity and ambiguous clinical and radiological features, and hence patients present at advanced stages resulting in poor prognosis. We report here four cases of incidentally diagnosed primary renal squamous cell carcinoma, treated at our hospital over a short span of one year, and review the relevant literature. Mean age of the patients (3 males, 1 female) was 60 years. All suffered from staghorn stones. Interestingly, renal carcinoma was unsuspected clinically in all patients. In one case,

Carcinoma with thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare malignant epithelial tumor which arises on soft tissue of the neck or thyroid gland. It is important to differentiate CASTLE from primary or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck, and from squamous cell thyroid carcinoma, because it has a different prognosis. CD5 immunoreactivity might be helpful in CASTLE diagnosis. CASTLE behaves generally in an indolent fashion, even though it has a high relapse rate, while the other have a dismal prognosis due its high dissemination rate. Treatment includes surgical excision and ra

Squamous carcinoma of the vulva (SCV) is an uncommon neoplasm of uncertain etiology. There is evidence that there are two subgroups of SCV, one associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) and a second HPV-negative group. The UCI-VULV-1 cell line, obtained from a lymph node metastasis of an SCV, grows with a population doubling time of approximately 60 hr. The saturation density is 10(5) cells/cm2. The cell line does not exhibit anchorage independence and is weakly tumorigenic. The cells range in appearance from an abundant spindle cell to a less common larger, flat cell. All of the cells are i

Angiogenesis plays an important role both in progression of solid tumors and in metastasizing. An invasive growth of a neoplasm is mainly connected with appearing of blood vessels within a tumor. Inhibition of angiogenesis in solid neoplasms may deter both tumor growth and metastases. New treatment strategies based on suppressing of angiogenesis and selective damaging of neoplastic blood vessels may prove to be as efficient as those based on direct destruction of neoplastic cells. One of important angiogenic factors is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is produced by neoplastic

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of two or more distinct neoplasms within the same anatomical site characterizes collision tumors. While the presence of dual tumors is frequently observed in esophageal cases, the simultaneous occurrence of three distinct tumor types is extremely rare, posing significant challenges for pathological evaluation and diagnosis. Surgical resection remains the primary treatment, with generally favorable outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) is not always identified on cervical Papanicolaou (Pap) test cytology because the Pap test has relatively low sensitivity for the diagnosis endocervical glandular lesions. We performed a retrospective study to determine the relative sensitivity of different diagnostic approaches, including Pap tests, cervical biopsy and/or endocervical curettage, loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), and hysterectomy specimens.
METHODS: Cases of endocervical AIS diagnosed from August 2005 to January 2019 were retrieved from our institution's pa

RATIONALE: Thyroid-like low-grade nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (TL-LGNPPA) is a rare neoplasm characterized by papillary epithelial proliferation and abnormal expression of thyroid transcription factor-1. To our knowledge, squamous differentiation in TL-LGNPPA is an unusual phenomenon, and only 1 case has been reported to date. The tumor occurs mainly on the roof of the nasopharynx. Herein, we report a case of TL-LGNPPA with squamous differentiation located on the posterior nasal septum.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 45-year-old Chinese women presented to our hospital with a complaint of nas
