Taste aversions conditioned with multiple exposures to gamma radiation: abolition by area postrema lesions in rats.

Lesions which destroy the area postrema (AP) and damage the adjacent nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) attenuate conditioned taste aversions (CTA) induced by a variety of pharmacological agents as well as exposure to radiation. In this experiment the possibility that AP lesions might not attenuate a radiation-induced CTA, when multiple pairings of the novel taste stimulus and exposure to gamma radiation occurred, was examined. Three groups of male rats received lesions of AP and another 3 groups received sham lesion. Following a recovery period all rats were adapted to a 23.5 h/day water dep

Neuroendocrine data in chronic post-traumatic headache.

Twenty chronic post-traumatic headache subjects (16 men and 4 women) were considered, together with age and sex matched normal controls. Pituitary function was challenged by means of luteinising hormone releasing hormone (100 microg, i.v.), thyrotropin (TSH) releasing hormone (200 microg, i.v.) and regular insulin (.1 U/kg, i.v.). The responses of gonadotropins, TSH, somatotropin (STH) and prolactin (PRL) were studied in the group as a whole and in clinical subgroups. No differences were found in the baseline levels of the hormones. No significant changes were observed in the responses of gona

Perioperative metabolic changes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Perioperative metabolic changes in cardiac surgical patients are not only induced by tissue injury and extracorporeal circulation per se: the systemic inflammatory response to surgical trauma and extracorporeal circulation, perioperative hypothermia, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses, and drugs and blood products used to maintain cardiovascular function and anesthesia contribute to varying degrees. The pathophysiologic changes include increased oxygen consumption and energy expenditure; increased secretion of adrenocorticotrophic hormone, cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, insuli

Synaptophysin immunoreactivity in primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease: neuroendocrine properties of tumors associated with Carney complex.

Carney complex (CNC) is characterized by lentiginosis and myxomatosis together with a variety of endocrine, neural crest-derived, and other tumors, including primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD). PPNAD is characterized by lipofuscin-containing, autonomously functioning, cortisol-producing nodules surrounded by mostly atrophic adrenocortical and normal adrenomedullary tissue. The nature and origin of the tumors, including the myxomas and PPNAD, are unclear. In this study, seven paraffin-embedded PPNAD tumors, one skin myxoma, and two cell lines (one myxoma and one PPNAD) est

Neuroendocrine effects of interferon-alpha in the rat.

We have previously found that recombinant human interferon-alpha 2A (rHu-IFN-alpha 2A) inhibits hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity following both peripheral and central administration. This effect is antagonized by mu-opioid receptor antagonists, suggesting transduction by this subtype of opioid receptors. We have now demonstrated that this effect is also observed with hybrid rHu-IFN-alpha A/D, rat kidney fibroblast-derived IFN-alpha, and recombinant rat IFN-alpha preparations. The inhibitory effects on HPA activity were observed after intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of

Role of neuroendocrine modulation and biochemistry in the sepsis in Piaractus mesopotamicus.

Sepsis is a systemic process with multifactorial pathophysiology that affects most animal species. It is responsible for high rates of morbidity and mortality. This work aimed to study the biochemical and neuroendocrine changes of the sepsis process in Piaractus mesopotamicus after Aeromonas hydrophila inoculation analyzing changes in blood leukocyte and differences in neuroendocrine-biochemical modulation using RNA-seq. Fish showed hypercortisolemia, inhibition of glucose absorption, followed by hypocortisolemia and then hyperglycemia. Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) showed immediate decrease in

Neuroendocrine disruption of organizational and activational hormone programming in poikilothermic vertebrates.

In vertebrates, sexual differentiation of the reproductive system and brain is tightly orchestrated by organizational and activational effects of endogenous hormones. In mammals and birds, the organizational period is typified by a surge of sex hormones during differentiation of specific neural circuits; whereas activational effects are dependent upon later increases in these same hormones at sexual maturation. Depending on the reproductive organ or brain region, initial programming events may be modulated by androgens or require conversion of androgens to estrogens. The prevailing notion base

Developmental programming: postnatal estradiol modulation of prenatally organized reproductive neuroendocrine function in sheep.

Gestational testosterone (TS) excess, acting via both the androgenic and estrogenic pathways, advances puberty and disrupts the neuroendocrine estradiol (E2) feedback and periovulatory hormonal dynamics in female sheep. These prenatally programmed defects may be subject to postnatal modifications by continued organizational and/or activational effects of steroids. This study investigated (1) the organizational contribution of prenatal estrogen excess and (2) the impact of postnatal exposure to E2 in modulating the effects of prenatal androgen excess (TS and dihydrotestosterone (DHT)) on pubert

Dopaminergic Neurons Controlling Anterior Pituitary Functions: Anatomy and Ontogenesis in Zebrafish.

Dopaminergic (DA) neurons located in the preoptico-hypothalamic region of the brain exert a major neuroendocrine control on reproduction, growth, and homeostasis by regulating the secretion of anterior pituitary (or adenohypophysis) hormones. Here, using a retrograde tract tracing experiment, we identified the neurons playing this role in the zebrafish. The DA cells projecting directly to the anterior pituitary are localized in the most anteroventral part of the preoptic area, and we named them preoptico-hypophyseal DA (POHDA) neurons. During development, these neurons do not appear before 72

Affective and neuroendocrine effects of withdrawal from chronic, long-acting opiate administration.

Although the long-acting opiate methadone is commonly used to treat drug addiction, relatively little is known about the effects of withdrawal from this drug in preclinical models. The current study examined affective, neuroendocrine, and somatic signs of withdrawal from the longer-acting methadone derivative l-alpha-acetylmethydol (LAAM) in rats. Anxiety-like behavior during both spontaneous and antagonist-precipitated withdrawal was measured by potentiation of the startle reflex. Withdrawal elevated corticosterone and somatic signs and blunted circadian variations in baseline startle respond

Structural pathology underlying neuroendocrine dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Polydipsic hyponatremic schizophrenic (PHS) patients exhibit altered neuroendocrine activity that has been linked to their life-threatening water imbalance, as well as to impaired function and reduced volume of the anterior hippocampus. Polydipsic patients without hyponatremia (polydipsic normonatremic schizophrenics: PNS) exhibit similar, albeit less marked, changes in neuroendocrine activity and anterior hippocampal function, but not reduced anterior hippocampal volume. Indeed, reduced anterior hippocampal volume is seen in patients with normal water balance (nonpolydipsic normonatremic schi

Imaging in covert ectopic ACTH secretion: a CT pictorial review.

The syndrome of ectopic adrenocorticotrophin secretion (EAS) is rare and is due to excess adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) production from a nonpituitary tumour. These tumours can be covert, where the tumours are not readily apparent, and very small making them challenging to image. It is clinically and biochemically difficult to distinguish between covert EAS and Cushing's disease. The first-line investigation in locating the source of ACTH production is computed tomography (CT). The aim of this pictorial review is to illustrate the likely covert sites and related imaging findings. We review the C

The pyloric neural circuit of the herbivorous crab Pugettia producta shows limited sensitivity to several neuromodulators that elicit robust effects in more opportunistically feeding decapods.

Modulation of neural circuits in the crustacean stomatogastric nervous system (STNS) allows flexibility in the movements of the foregut musculature. The extensive repertoire of such resulting motor patterns in dietary generalists is hypothesized to permit these animals to process varied foods. The foregut and STNS of Pugettia producta are similar to those of other decapods, but its diet is more uniform, consisting primarily of kelp. We investigated the distribution of highly conserved neuromodulators in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) and neuroendocrine organs of Pugettia, and documented the

Neuroactive steroids in depression and anxiety disorders: clinical studies.

Certain neuroactive steroids modulate ligand-gated ion channels via non-genomic mechanisms. Especially 3alpha-reduced pregnane steroids are potent positive allosteric modulators of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)) receptor. During major depression, there is a disequilibrium of 3alpha-reduced neuroactive steroids, which is corrected by clinically effective pharmacological treatment. To investigate whether these alterations are a general principle of successful antidepressant treatment, we studied the impact of nonpharmacological treatment options on neuroactive steroid concentration

Neuropeptides in neurogenic disorders of the cardiovascular control.

Growing number of studies reveal that the brain neural network plays significant role in the short-term and long-term regulation of the cardiovascular functions. The neurons involved in the complex neurogenic control of the cardiovascular system use classical neurotransmitters and nonconventional mediators such as peptides (angiotensin II, vasopressin, natriuretic peptides, endothelins, opioids, cytokines), steroids, ouabain-like factors and gaseous compounds. Among them the neuropeptides form a group of substances arising significant interest. Thanks to wide distribution of peptidergic neuron

A rapid neuromodulatory role for steroid hormones in the control of reproductive behavior.

The long-term transcriptional actions of steroids that shape neuronal morphology and the probability of behavioral expression are well established. More recently, attention has been focused on the role of rapid (minute-by-minute) steroid actions on neuronal mechanisms of reproductive behavior. In this review, we first consider the rapid actions of steroids on mating and copulatory behaviors in tetrapod vertebrates. Evidence for rapid effects of steroids is presented for chemoinvestigatory behavior (genital sniffing of females by male mice), lordosis (arched-back mating posture in female rats),

Group sex, sex change, and parasitic males: sexual strategies among the fishes and their neurobiological correlates.

Sexual selection, in the form of intrasexual competition and mate choice, has driven the evolution of a variety of sexual phenotypes amongst the vertebrates (Andersson, 1994). As a result, vertebrate species utilize many different approaches to acquire fertilizations. Humans and other primates show a wide range of sexual behaviors, but this range is dwarfed by the remarkable variation seen in advanced fishes. The goals of this review are (a) to acquaint the reader with the tremendous sexual diversity exhibited by fishes, (b) to demonstrate how this diversity provides unique opportunities to ex

Divergent endocrine abnormalities in melancholic and atypical depression: clinical and pathophysiologic implications.

Mediators of neuroendocrine and autonomic function seem to play important roles in the core symptoms of major depression. Although centrally directed corticotropin-releasing hormones and norepinephrine contribute to core symptoms such as alterations in anxiety, arousal, and mood, they also exert significant potentially clinically relevant effects on key processes that proceed in the periphery. Thus, the core clinical manifestations of major depression may represent a fraction of a complicated systemic illness that not only influences thought and feeling, but also the processes involved in prem
