Management of skin conditions in the older population 2.

This is the second of two papers covering assessment and management of elderly skin. Part 1 of this clinical review focused on the importance of a comprehensive assessment of the skin and a detailed clinical history of the patient (Bianchi and Cameron, 2008). This second paper considers some common dermatological conditions seen in the older adult and explores suitable management strategies.

[Nursing--construction of a model based on the medical discourse].

The purpose is to trace a parallel between the medical discourse contents and the expected and stereotyped nurses behavior at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a historic-social approach in which was made use of speeches uttered by nurses and physicians at nursing and medicine schools. The analysis of physicians discourse compared to nurses discourse disclose the formation of a mentality shaped and turned docile by the medical power which wanted them holy and servile.

Management of the long-term indwelling catheter in the home setting.

The proper management of the long-term indwelling catheter in the home setting is particularly challenging. An improperly managed catheter can lead to significant complications and costs. Proper catheter selection and a carefully designed preventive program of catheter care can prevent or minimize the impact of many potentially costly complications, including leakage around the catheter, encrustation, irritation, obstruction, and symptomatic urinary tract infection.

Assessing spatial equity in integrated health care facilities for older adults: a case study in the metropolis of Guangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring equitable access to health care facilities for older adults is an increasingly important concern for academic researchers and policymakers in building age-friendly cities and communities. Previous studies have seldom explored the spatial equity in the distribution of geographic access to multi-tiered and multi-type health care facilities in China, especially community-based care for older adults. METHODS: To compensate for this gap, this article adopted the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method to systematically and dynamically evaluate equity in spatial accessi

The elements of nursing ... all but unknown.

In summing up, I have explored briefly some notions on the elements of nursing through the theme of partnership with the public and with others involved in health care. These notions, which are by no means exclusive, have centred around five main areas; Firstly, the unique personal characteristics demanded by the closeness of sustained contact with patients and clients; Secondly, the primacy of the patient's and the public's needs in defining nursing or any other health care profession; Thirdly, the need for nursing both individually and organisationally to look outwards and engage with the wi

Care networks for children and adolescents with craniofacial malformations: Perspectives from caregivers and nurses in a Brazilian border region.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the care network for children and adolescents with craniofacial malformations in municipalities located in the western border region of Paraná, based on the experiences of caregivers and nurses in Primary Health Care. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 18 caregivers and 13 nurses. Data were interpreted through Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics. RESULTS: The findings revealed positive aspects, such as timely reception in specialized services and early team engagement. However, significant challenges emerged, including stru

Narrative Inquiry Into Shelter-Seeking by Women With a History of Repeated Incarceration: Research and Nursing Practice Implications.

Nurses who provide care in the community to women with a history of repeated incarceration may struggle to understand the full extent of the barriers faced by this population and as a result risk giving suboptimal care to an already underserved group. This narrative inquiry study of stories told by 10 women with histories of repeated incarceration fulfilled 2 purposes: to demonstrate how women's shelter-seeking stories exposed uniquely complex patterns of health opportunity and risk and to demonstrate how storytelling might serve as an informative mode of nursing health assessment for this pop

Liver transplantation in children: update 2010.

Pediatric liver transplant recipients represent an important target population for primary care health professionals as well as transplant practitioners. With improving patient and graft survival, new concerns now face health care professionals caring for the transplant community, namely the long-term complications of immunosuppressive therapy and the potential for withdrawal of immunosuppression, transplant recipients' quality of life, and the persistent shortage of donor organs leading to morbidity and mortality on the waiting list. These issues require constant collaboration between pediatr

Knowledge, beliefs, and practices regarding exclusive breastfeeding of infants younger than 6 months in Mozambique: a qualitative study.

Only 37% of infants younger than 6 months in Mozambique are exclusively breastfed. A qualitative assessment was undertaken to identify the knowledge, beliefs, and practices around exclusive breastfeeding--specifically, those of mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and nurses--and to identify the support networks. Results show many barriers. In addition to receiving breast milk, infants receive water, traditional medicines, and porridges before 6 months of age. Many mothers had heard of the recommendation to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months. However, other family decision makers had heard less ab

Louisiana neurosurgeons and the organ procurement shortage: a comparative analysis of perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values.

The supply of transplantable organs continues to fall behind demand. Knowledge of the perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values held by health care workers involved in the process is critical. This is particularly true of neurosurgeons because of their pivotal role in the procurement process. Survey data are used to compare neurosurgeons (n = 59) with emergency physicians (n = 125), critical care nurses (n = 267), and other physicians (n = 445). Analysis revealed that attitudes among those health care workers regularly involved with organ procurement and transplantation--neurosurgeons, emerge

Promoting User Involvement to Foster Technological Citizenship in the Digitizing Healthcare Domain.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly prominent role in healthcare technology, particularly in patient monitoring and diagnosis. While AI offers significant benefits, it raises concerns about the patient-provider relationship and key care values. To mitigate these risks and align technology with societal values, experts stress the importance of user involvement in technology development. However, input from patients or nurses during AI development remains uncommon. The rapidly digitizing healthcare thus demonstrates a context where technological citizenship is not yet thrivin

Testing Nursing Sensitive Outcomes in Out-Patient Drug Addicts, with "Nursing Role Effectiveness Model".

Our aim was to identify factors that contribute to a better outcome in drug users and to understand the effectiveness of nursing interventions, by applying "Nursing Role Effectiveness Model" (NREM). It's a correlational, cross-sectional study with 180 drug users in a methadone program, randomly selected from three community services. We identified that treatment time, lower co-morbidities, less poly-drug use, family support and being employed contribute to a better quality of life, better mental health, less substance addiction consequences and more satisfaction with nursing care (p < 0.05). Unmasking the predicament of cultural voyeurism: a postcolonial analysis of international nursing placements.

The growing interest in international nursing placements cannot be left unnoticed. After 11 years into this twenty-first century, violations of human rights and freedom of speech, environmental disasters, and armed conflicts still create dire living conditions for men and women around the world. Nurses have an ethical duty to address issues of social justice and global health as a means to fulfil nursing's social mandate. However, international placements raise some concerns. Drawing on the works of postcolonial theorists in nursing and social sciences, we examine the risk of replicating colon

Hurricane Helene: Lessons Learned.

This article examines the response of a community hospital in southern Appalachia during and after Hurricane Helene, a severe natural disaster that highlighted both the strengths and challenges of rural health care delivery. This experience reveals critical lessons for emergency nursing, including the need for flexibility, community collaboration, and comprehensive preparedness plans addressing both patient care and staff needs. By integrating these insights, health care systems can strengthen their capacity to respond to future disasters while supporting their workforce and communities effect

Digital Health Technology Adoption Readiness Among Doctoral Nursing Students in Saudi Arabia: An Exploratory Qualitative Study.

Background: Digital health technologies are increasingly integral to healthcare delivery worldwide; however, successful adoption depends on more than technological availability. In nursing, readiness is particularly important because digital systems increasingly shape documentation, communication, decision support, and care delivery. Within the context of Saudi Arabia's healthcare transformation, doctoral nursing students are positioned as future educators, clinicians, and leaders whose perceptions can provide insight into digital health readiness and preparation. Aim: This study aimed to expl
