Out-of-hospital helmet CPAP in acute respiratory failure reduces mortality: a study led by nurses.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a condition that must be treated as quickly as possible. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a common method used to treat ARF in hospital. The main objective of our study was to investigate the effect of CPAP prior to admission to the emergency room, on the reduction of endotracheal intubation, in-hospital mortality and on the length of stay in hospital (HLOS). METHODS: A prospective, observational (non-randomised) study with a historical control group. Data from 3 groups of patients with ARF, irrespective of cause, was collect

Impact of Family-Based Care on the Outcome of Brain Death and Humanization in the Process of Multiple Organ Donation: Case Report.

In the care of this 29-year-old male patient, a victim of traumatic brain injury with brain death outcome, the multidisciplinary team played a fundamental role in an integrated, ethical, transparent and humanized way. Particularly important was the work of the nursing team, which provided humane and empathetic care and established a bond of trust with family members; the medical team, which managed the case with respect and clarity, guaranteeing the family's right to witness the diagnostic process and understand it at all stages; and psychology, which provided shelter and support for grieving.

Results of a study on nursing students' success in taking advanced level (Graduate) pathophysiology in their basic nursing program.

Schools of nursing are encouraged to provide a course of study offering unique educational models that support the learning needs of adult students who attained a non-nursing Bachelor's Degree prior to enrolling in nursing school, Also known as nontraditional students, graduates of these programs often go on to seek graduate degrees in nursing (McKenna and Brooks, 2018). Non-traditional students may be older and desire to complete graduate education in a timely manner. The study focus was to determine if pre-licensure BSN students can successfully complete graduate course work during their pre

Nurses' competence in kinaesthetics : A concept development.

AIM: This study was carried out to systematically describe nurses' competence in kinaesthetics. BACKGROUND: In elderly care the kinaesthetics program for nurses has been taught for over 25 years; however, the competence that nurses should gain through kinaesthetics training from a theoretical perspective has not yet been systematically described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The method was modelled after the three phases of the hybrid model of concept development by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim (2000). In the theoretical phase a working definition was established and a literature review conducted. We s

'It depends': medical residents' perspectives on working with nurses.

OBJECTIVE: Using the theory of relational coordination, which holds that in high-pressure settings such as hospitals, high-quality communication and strong relationships are necessary for coordinated action, we sought to determine the quality of the nurse-physician relationship by examining the communication and interaction between nurses and residents from the residents' perspective. METHODS: A sample of 20 medical and surgical residents, selected by a snowball sampling technique, were interviewed about the quality of their communication and relationships with nurses in the workplace. Wandering in Alzheimer's dementia patients.

The purpose of this research was to describe wandering behaviors of institutionalized patients with Alzheimer's disease in their natural environment. Such descriptive information is necessary before successful product and/or nursing intervention programs can be developed. Videotaped behavioral observations yielded detailed data descriptive of patients with middle and late dementia. These patients have the physical ability to perform various functions, activities, or actions; the individual's mental ability is less supportive of physical ability. The degree of task simplicity required to enable

"If Ever a Wreck Came Back from Overseas She Was One": The Treatment and Pensioning of Psychologically Traumatized Nursing Sisters after the First World War.

During the First World War, 2845 women served as nursing sisters with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war, some women developed nervous and mental conditions that they said were caused by their wartime service and applied for military pensions and treatment. So how were these women treated by doctors and pension boards? Men who suffered from psychological trauma were frequently labelled as "cowards" or "malingerers." Many of the symptoms typically associated with nervous cases, such as hysteria, were viewed as inherently feminine at the time but we know little about how this criter

Mitigation of COVID-19 Risk Among Older Adults in Nursing Homes: A Public Survey.

The current study examines the public's perception on the mitigation of COVID-19 risk and knowledge of disease symptoms among older adults in nursing homes, with the intention to address gaps in knowledge using mobile technologies. An online survey questionnaire was completed by 611 adults residing in Malaysia. The four domains, derived from factor analysis, affirmed the supportive perception among the public (score range = 4.42 to 4.64/5.0). However, among the gaps identified were the perception toward hand sanitizing and susceptibility of older adults to COVID-19. Public knowledge on symptom

Craniofacial and shoulder asymmetry and its relationship to temporomandibular disorder: A study of 183 patients.

We conducted a prospective study to ascertain the prevalence of features of craniofacial and shoulder asymmetry and to determine if they are related to temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Our study population was made up of 183 patients-105 females and 78 males, aged 8 to 92 years (mean: 53.5; median: 60) who presented to a private otolaryngologic practice in a rural retirement community in Arizona. These patients completed a questionnaire to determine their self-assessment of the their body asymmetry. Next, all patients underwent a nurse evaluation for the presence or absence of asymmetry, whic

Molecular epidemiology of catheter-associated bacteriuria in nursing home patients.

Urine samples from 19 nursing home patients with long-term urinary catheters were cultured every 3 months for 18 months. Providencia stuartii, present in 74% of the elderly and in 59% of urine specimens, was the most frequently isolated bacteria. The persistence of P. stuartii was significantly higher among females than among males. In order to study the epidemiology of bacteriuria in this nursing home, bacteria were characterized by biochemical tests, antibiotic susceptibility pattern, and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. The antibiotic susceptibility pattern indicate

LGBTQIA+ Competence: A Pedagogical Paradigm Shift in Graduate Nursing Education.

BACKGROUND: The omission of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) content in graduate nursing education leaves people who identify as sexually or gender diverse (SGD) with poorer health across the life span and a 12-year shorter life expectancy relative to heteronormative counterparts. METHOD: An educational intervention was paired with an optional academic-community-based clinical immersion in LGBTQIA+ health with the goal of improving health equity for people who identify as SGD. Masters of Nursing students (N = 11) from adult specialties participated in a
