Thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion: The debate and ethical considerations for nurses.

Normothermic regional perfusion is a relatively new organ procurement technique used in the setting of donation after circulatory death. It facilitates blood flow through a specific area of the body to limit and reverse ischemic damage, ultimately improving organ viability for transplant. Despite its lauded benefits of improving organ quantity, quality, and transplant outcomes, the process is both legally and ethically controversial. In particular, normothermic regional perfusion of the thoracic region has generated significant controversy, because (1) this process restarts the heart in the do

Bridging Theory and Practice in Emergency Nursing: A Discussion Paper on Peripheral intravenous catheter Management Using Tanner's and Chinn & Kramer's Models.

INTRODUCTION: Nursing management of peripheral intravenous catheters remains suboptimal and often lacks integration with underpinning theory. Therefore, it is essential to reflect on the persistent gap between theory and practice to enhance patients' outcomes in this area. OBJECTIVES: To conceptually evaluate the integration of Tanner's Clinical Judgment Model using Chinn and Kramer's criteria, and to explore the integration of these two complementary frameworks with Kramer's Ways of Knowing for peripheral intravenous catheter decision-making and patient outcomes improvement in the emergency

Effects of Emergency Nurses' Life-Sustaining Treatment Withdrawal Knowledge, Role Perception, and Job Stress on Providing End-of-Life Care.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify predictors of end-of-life (EOL) care provided by emergency nurses in South Korea. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire. Data were collected using Google Forms between June 21 and 30, 2022. A total of 154 emergency nurses from 10 tertiary hospitals in a metropolitan area were recruited using convenience sampling, and 139 completed surveys were analyzed. Multiple linear regression was employed to examine the effects of nurses' knowledge of life-sustaining treatment withdrawal (knowledge), their perceptions of thei

Prison Nursing: Formation of a Stable Professional Identity.

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze how working within prison environments can influence the self-identity and professional identity of nurses. BACKGROUND: The prison environment can be a difficult environment for nurses to deliver care within, with nurses having to carry out activities that seem to go against their professional role, while at the same time providing care to prisoners who have greater health needs than the general population. There is a lack of theoretical consideration of how prison nurses carry out their role in the face of such challenges. METHOD: This study used a

Use of Health Apps by Nurses for Professional Purposes: Web-Based Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: In the last few years, the number of mobile apps for health professionals has increased exponentially. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge about the professional use, training requirements, and quality perception of these apps among health care professionals such as nurses. Considering that the nursing profession is the largest segment of health care workforce in many countries such as Spain, the impact of the use of health apps by these professionals can be critical to the future of modern health care. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to determine if nurses

Integrating a Large Language Model to Streamline Nursing Handover Documentation Across Multiple Hospitals in Taiwan: Development and Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage, exacerbated by heavy workloads and high turnover rates associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to undermine care quality and nurse well-being. Although digital health technologies have enhanced coordination, improved communication, and reduced clinical errors in nursing practice, they have also increased nurses' documentation burden. Advances in large language models (LLMs) and other generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools facilitate the generation of accurate reports from electronic medical records (EMRs), thereby streamlining documen

Pediatric brain death: updated guidelines.

Logan, a 5-year-old boy, was riding his bike with his 7-year-old brother when he was struck from behind by a car traveling at approximately 40 mph. The driver indicated that she did not see the riders until she hit Logan, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Logan was thrown from his bike and was found at the side of the road, unresponsive and posturing. Although he was uninjured, Logan's brother witnessed the incident.Emergency medical services arrived and placed Logan on a backboard with a c-collar. Because he was not protecting his airway, he was intubated and then give

Building Community Among PhD-Prepared Nurses in a Health System.

PhD-prepared nurses are increasingly employed in health care delivery settings, although their roles and contributions are not well publicized. Spotlighting opportunities for PhD-prepared nurses in health systems may encourage more nurses to pursue research doctorates. The goals of this article are to demonstrate the versatility of research doctoral training by highlighting a growing community of PhD-prepared nurses working in a New York City health system and exploring their educational journeys, career pathways, and professional roles; and to describe the process of finding and sustaining a

Research Utilization: A Cross-Sectional Survey of the Barriers and Facilitators Among Clinical Nurses in Ghana.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The involvement of clinical nurses in the utilization of nursing research in practice has been reported to be minimal. Globally, several studies have reported a host of challenges that hinder the efforts of nurses to use research in practice. However, other facilitators to nursing research exist. This study sought to assess the barriers and facilitators to the utilization of nursing research among Ghanaian nurses in practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among clinical nurses working at a tertiary health facility in northern Ghana. A total of 330 partic

Case study: ED acts quickly after anthrax.

After last year's anthrax attacks, EDs at Capital Health System in Trenton, NJ, had to address decontamination of large numbers of patients. Patients who didn't require decontamination were sent to the hospital's employee health facility so they could bypass the ED. Clinicians, nursing staff, educators, and paramedics were trained in the decontamination process. Direct communication with first responders was established with a portable scanner.

Reforming licensure pathways for internationally educated nurses in Canada: A comparative analysis of four provinces.

BACKGROUND: Amid longstanding nursing shortages, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, federal, provincial, and territorial governments across Canada prioritized the recruitment of internationally educated nurses (IENs). As a result, nursing regulators were strongly encouraged to implement a range of policy shifts to reduce licensure barriers. The nature and scope of these reforms have varied across jurisdictions. OBJECTIVE: To identify and compare the policy processes, drivers, and outcomes of IEN licensure reforms in the Canadian jurisdictions of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova

Expanding buprenorphine prescribing in primary care: a qualitative study of the experiences of primary care providers and nurse care managers participating in the New York City buprenorphine nurse care manager initiative.

BACKGROUND: Improving access to and retention in evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine, is a critical response to the opioid overdose crisis. To increase the availability of buprenorphine treatment in primary care settings, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene implemented the Buprenorphine Nurse Care Manager Initiative in safety-net primary care clinics. The initiative funds nurse care managers to coordinate ongoing buprenorphine care and provides clinical support and technical assistance for implementation. METHODS: As part of a proces
