[Evaluation of long-term occupational exposure to dust and its effect on health during production of ceramic tiles].

A medical examination has been carried out of 500 workers (290 men and 210 women) of a ceramic plates plant. Also, the measurements of dust concentrations were made at some standard work places . In the materials used for manufacturing the plates crystalline phases and the content of free crystalline silica were determined using the X-ray diffraction method. In the animal experiments the fibrogenic activity of all materials used in the plant was examined and compared to the fibrogenic activity of standard quartz. As a result of the medical examination 64 cases of pneumoconiosis were diagnosed

Incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis by occupation of hospital employees in the National Health Service in England and Wales 1980-84.

Examination of occupational health records for National Health Service employees in hospitals in England and Wales for 1980-84 has shown that the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis has fallen for all occupations. Levels for all occupational groups, except mortuary attendants, are now comparable to or lower than that for the general population. An average of 3 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis would be expected to occur annually amongst the 20,790 staff (including mortuary attendants) classified as being at higher risk and offered annual X-rays. Routine annual X-rays failed to identify 60 per ce…

Occupational health risks from climate-related and infectious-disease stressors: A scoping review of worker safety and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines how climate-related stressors and infectious-disease conditions, including pandemic-related workplac … ping benefits. CONCLUSIONS: Climate-related and infectious-disease stressors interact to reinforce occupational health inequities and expose persistent gaps in worker protection. The findings highlight the need for integrated, multi-hazard occupational health strategies that align climate adaptation, infection prevention, and psychosocial support. Embedding data-dri …

Promoting Preconception Care Through Occupational Health Checkups: Development and Pilot Evaluation of a Digital Tool for Japanese Women.

BACKGROUND: Digital approaches to preconception care (PCC) may help increase reproductive health awareness among women of reproductive age. This pilot study evaluated the usability, acceptability, and perceived impact of a digital PCC tool delivered during workplace health checkups in Japan. METHODS: A quick response (QR) code linking to a digital PCC tool was distributed during routine workplace health checkups for women aged 18-40 years. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing perceived usefulness, ease of understanding, relevance to personal health, intention to seek medical consu

Occupational Infection Prevention Among Nurses and Laboratory Technicians Amidst Multiple Health Emergencies in Outbreak-Prone Country, D.R. Congo.

Millions of healthcare workers experience percutaneous exposure to bloodborne communicable infectious disease pathogens annually, with the risk of contracting occupationally acquired infections. In this study, we aimed to assess the status of occupational safety and outbreak preparedness in Congolese nurses and laboratory technicians in Kongo central and the Katanga area, amidst multiple ongoing public health emergencies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This was a multicenter analytical cross-sectional study conducted in five referral hospitals located in Kongo central province a

Occupational exposure intensity trends in health care workers: Joinpoint Regression identifies COVID-19 associated inflection point (2017-2024).

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) globally face substantial risks from occupational blood and body fluids (BBFs) exposure, with disparities heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. China's health care system, characterized by low workforce density and chronic HCW fatigue (53.9%-82%), presents a critical context for analyzing exposure dynamics. Existing studies lack longitudinal data across pandemic phases and stratified analyses by years of service (YoS). METHODS: This longitudinal study (2017-2024) analyzed 860 occupational BBFs exposures from a Chinese tertiary hospital. Trends were assess

Occupational Exposure to Disinfectants and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease among US Nurses: The Nurses' Health Study II.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to certain chemicals in disinfectants has been associated with vascular dysfunction in toxicological studies, but the association between disinfectant exposure and clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between occupational exposure to disinfectants and subsequent risk of CVD among US nurses. METHODS: We included 75,675 participants from The Nurses' Health Study II who maintained a nursing job and reported data on occupational disinfectant exposure. We estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% co

Acute toxic encephalopathy induced by organic solvent exposure: a case report of diagnostic challenges and occupational health implications.

BACKGROUND: Toxic encephalopathy, which results from exposure to neurotoxic substances, poses a considerable clinical challenge, especially for occupational groups like painters and construction workers. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 35-year-old female painter who experienced acute toxic encephalopathy, presenting with severe headache, nausea, and vomiting. Initially, her condition was misdiagnosed as cervical spondylosis. However, recognizing her occupational exposure to organic solvents was essential for arriving at the correct diagnosis. This case highlights the importanc

Medicinal herbs and multiple sclerosis: Overview on the hard balance between new therapeutic strategy and occupational health risk.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by demyelination and axonal loss of the central nervous system (CNS). Despite its spread throughout the world, the mechanisms that determine its onset are still to be defined. Immunological, genetic, viral, and environmental factors and exposure to chemicals may trigger MS. Many studies have highlighted the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of medicinal herbs, which make them a natural and complementary treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. A severe reduction of several MS symptoms occurs with herbal therapy. Thus, the

Occupational infectious diseases among Korean health care workers compensated with Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance from 1998 to 2004.

Using the database of the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation (KLWC), which is the public organization for workers' compensation in Korea, we analyzed the occupational infectious diseases among the health care workers who were compensated by the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance (IACI). From January 1998 to December 2004, 307 cases of infectious diseases were approved as being cases of occupational diseases. Women accounted for 83% (254 cases) of the compensated cases. The most common age group was 20-29 yr of age (228 cases, 74.3%). The majority of infections were tuberculosis (203 cases

Prospective Seroepidemiological Study of Hepatitis E Virus Infection in an Occupational Health-Checkup Cohort in Mie Prefecture, Japan.

AIMS: Reported cases of hepatitis E have increased in Japan; however, the true burden of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is likely underestimated due to the high proportion of asymptomatic infections. We prospectively evaluated anti-HEV immunoglobulin G (IgG) seroprevalence, seroconversion-based incidence, and questionnaire-reported exposures in an occupational health-checkup cohort in Mie Prefecture, central Japan. METHODS: A total of 608 individuals (189 men and 419 women) who underwent annual health checkups between fiscal years 2023 and 2025 were included. Serum anti-HEV IgG was measure…
