The records of 35 dogs and two cats with Broviac-Cookea catheters implanted during a one-year period at The Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (OSU-VTH) were reviewed for complications. In 36 patients, the catheters were used for daily anesthesia associated with cobalt radiotherapy, and in one dog the catheter was used for parenteral hyperalimentation. The catheters were in place for a mean of 16.7 days. We study the effect of incarceration on wages, self-employment, and taxes and transfers in North Carolina and Ohio using two quasi-experimental research designs: discontinuities in sentencing guidelines and random assignment to judges. Across both states, incarceration generates short-term drops in economic activity while individuals remain in prison. As a result, a year-long sentence decreases cumulative earnings over five years by 13%. West Nile virus (WNV) arrived in North America and spread rapidly through the western hemisphere. We present a series of tests to determine whether ecological factors are consistently associated with WNV transmission to humans. Routine screening for alcohol abuse in primary care, with brief advice to stop drinking for those screening positive, can detect individuals with alcohol problems and reduce alcohol use and alcohol induced problems in those detected. Data provided by the Comprehensive Epidemiology Data Resource allowed us to study patterns of cancer mortality as experienced by 3814 uranium-processing workers employed at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center in Fernald, Ohio. Using risk-set analyses for cohorts, we estimated the effects of exposure to trichloroethylene, cutting fluids, and kerosene on cancer mortality. Workers' compensation claims in Ohio were evaluated as a source of surveillance data for identifying workplaces at high risk of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) and analyzed for their demographic and industrial characteristics. During a 5-year period (1980 to 1984), 6,849 workers' compensation claims met the case criteria for CTDs.
