Open reduction-internal fixation of a navicular body fracture with dorsal displacement of the first and second cuneiforms: a case report.

Body fractures of the tarsal navicular are relatively uncommon. To date, there is little literature discussing a navicular body fracture with dorsal subluxation of the first and second cuneiforms over the navicular. This case study presents a 30-year-old patient with this injury. He underwent open reduction internal fixation of the navicular body fracture successfully but failed adequate reduction of the navicular cuneiform joint after ligamentous reconstruction. After revisional surgery, he also failed 6 weeks of percutanous pinning with Kirschner-wire fixation. When comparing the literature

Open accurate reduction for irreducible mallet fractures through a new pulp traction technique with primary tendon repair.

Sixteen patients with bony mallet fingers were treated by a new technique of open reduction through a T-shaped dorsal incision and oblique wire fixation via pulp traction with additional primary extensor repair. Surgical indications included fractures with intra-articular involvement over 1/3 of the articular surface, distal phalanx subluxation, and displacement greater than 3 mm irreducible by extension block pinning. The cases were analysed prospectively for a mean follow-up period of 12 months. The results were evaluated using Crawford's criteria. Eleven cases were evaluated as excellent, t

Open reduction and internal fixation for angulated, unstable odontoid synchondrosis fractures in children: a safe alternative to halo fixation?

External orthosis is the accepted and historical management of odontoid synchondrosis fractures; however, this conservative therapy carries a significant complication and fracture nonunion rate among young children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the authors' own experience in the context of the literature, to explore surgical fixation as a primary treatment for unstable fractures. The authors retrospectively reviewed 2 cases of unstable odontoid synchondrosis fractures treated at their institution; both showed radiographic progression of deformity and subsequently underwent an open

Open reduction and plate fixation of dorsally displaced fractures of the distal radius: surgical technique, clinical and radiological outcome.

Thirty-five unstable dorsally displaced fractures of the distal radius in 34 patients (mean age 39) were studied; 28 fractures were intra-articular. All fractures had open reduction and fixation, through a dorsal approach, with mini-fragment plates placed between the first and second dorsal tendon compartments and deep to the fourth compartment. A congruous reduction of the articular surface was obtained in all cases. Twenty-four patients were available for follow-up (median 38 months). The Modified Mayo wrist score was excellent in 12 cases, good in four, and fair in eight. The median Patient

Open reduction and internal fixation of Type I Monteggia Equivalent fractures: A case series with excellent functional outcomes.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Monteggia equivalent fractures, a spectrum of proximal ulnar and radial injuries extending beyond classic Monteggia patterns, are rare and diagnostically challenging, particularly in adults. Delayed presentation further complicates management and increases the risk of long-term morbidity. This report details a case series of two adult patients with Type I Monteggia Equivalent fractures, one with a delayed presentation, successfully treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the radial fracture. We aim to elucidate effective diagnostic and treatment

Predictors for the necessity of open reduction in the treatment of pediatric both bone forearm fractures with elastic stable intramedullary nailing.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) enables stable osteosynthesis with a low rate of complications in pediatric both-bone forearm fractures. However, repeated unsuccessful attempts at closed reduction can cause unnecessary soft tissue trauma and increased radiation exposure. We conducted a retrospective study of pediatric forearm fracture patients to identify predictors for the need for open reduction when using ESIN. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 65 pediatric patients who underwent ESIN osteosynthesis for both-bone forearm fractures. We analyzed gender

Mid to long term follow up of early weightbearing after open reduction internal fixation of ankle fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have demonstrated successful outcomes with early weightbearing following open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of specific ankle fractures. The external validity of an early weightbearing protocol and its effects on patient-reported outcome information scores (PROMIS) has yet to be investigated. This study aimed to investigate the effects of an early weightbearing protocol for all operatively treated ankle fractures and its impact on clinical outcomes and complications. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 229 patients (≥ 16 years) with OTA/AO 44 A-C fract

Open reduction can be a reasonable, safe and effective choice in complex paediatric supracondylar humeral fractures operative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humeral fractures are among the most common paediatric injuries. Displacement and consequent need for reduction impose operative treatment. Restoration of the anatomy of the distal part of the humerus prevents deformities and functional disorders of the elbow and upper limb. Stable K-wire fixation can be succeeded either by closed or open reduction method. AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of open reduction method in the operative treatment of Gartland type III and IV supracondylar humeral fractures in children. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 131 case

The intertrochanteric line approach for irreducible femoral neck fractures: a novel open reduction technique with favorable clinical outcomes.

PURPOSE: Despite the high incidence of femoral neck fractures, the optimal surgical strategy (open reduction vs. closed reduction) for patients with an irreducible femoral neck fracture (IFNF) remains a controversial topic. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus regarding the surgical approach to open reduction. The purpose of this study was to introduce a novel open approach for the treatment of IFNF. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 52 patients defined as IFNF who achieved anatomic reduction and definitive fixation through the intertrochanteric line approach. During surgical manageme

Readmission within 30-days of open reduction and internal fixation for ankle fractures: NSQIP analysis of 29,905 patients.

BACKGROUND: Historically, ankle fractures have been treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) procedures, which are considered safe and effective. Patient characteristics may contribute to postoperative difficulties thereby increasing risk of hospital readmission. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of and reasons for 30-day readmission and postoperative complications following ORIF for ankle fractures. METHODS: A retrospective review of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database from 2015 to 2021 identified patients undergoing ORI
