[Neuroretinitis in children--independent observations].

INTRODUCTION: Neuroretinitis in children is a rarely occurring entity that is characterized by optic disk edema, macular hard exudates, peripapillary subretinal exudates and the presence of posterior vitreous cells. Neuroretinitis' etiology can be infectious or non-infectious. The non-infectious causes include: systemic diseases, vascular diseases, diabetes, cancer. Most cases of neuroretinitis are idiopathic. Other forms can have an infectious cause: from animal, bacterial, viral, fungal. It occurs usually as a benign complication of pediatric infectious diseases, cat scratch disease (bartone…

Comparison of posterior vitreous detachment-related and glaucomatous optic disc hemorrhage.

This study compared the characteristics of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)-related and glaucomatous optic disc hemorrhage (DH). Fundus photographs of eyes with PVD-related DH (PVD group) and glaucomatous DH (glaucoma group) were reviewed. The shape, type, layer, location (clock-hour sector), and DH/disc area (DH/DA) ratio of DH were investigated. In the PVD group, DH presented as a flame (60.9%), splinter (34.8%), and dot or blot (4.3%) shape. However, most of the glaucomatous DH revealed a splinter shape (92.3%), followed by a flame shape (7.7%, p < 0.001). In the PVD group, the most comm

[Biomechanics of the lamina cribrosa: A determining factor in glaucomatous neuropathy. A review of the literature].

Glaucoma is a chronic optic neuropathy characterized by progressive sclero-laminar remodeling. The main factor at the origin of these deformations is the intraocular pressure (IOP), the effect of which varies according to the biomechanical properties of the individual lamina cribrosa (LC). In this environment, the LC represents a malleable zone of weakness within a rigid corneoscleral shell. It is a dynamic structure whose movements play a key role in the pathogenesis of glaucoma: displacing it posteriorly, in addition to contributing to the characteristic appearance of glaucomatous cupping, w

TUNet and domain adaptation based learning for joint optic disc and cup segmentation.

Glaucoma is a chronic disorder that harms the optic nerves and causes irreversible blindness. The calculation of optic cup (OC) to optic disc (OD) ratio plays an important role in the primary screening and diagnosis of glaucoma. Thus, automatic and precise segmentations of OD and OC is highly preferable. Recently, deep neural networks demonstrate remarkable progress in the OD and OC segmentation, however, they are severely hindered in generalizing across different scanners and image resolution. In this work, we propose a novel domain adaptation-based framework to mitigate the performance degra

Artifact-Tolerant Clustering-Guided Contrastive Embedding Learning for Ophthalmic Images in Glaucoma.

Ophthalmic images, along with their derivatives like retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness maps, play a crucial role in detecting and monitoring eye diseases such as glaucoma. For computer-aided diagnosis of eye diseases, the key technique is to automatically extract meaningful features from ophthalmic images that can reveal the biomarkers (e.g., RNFL thinning patterns) associated with functional vision loss. However, representation learning from ophthalmic images that links structural retinal damage with human vision loss is non-trivial mostly due to large anatomical variations between p

The Fibro-Inflammatory Response in the Glaucomatous Optic Nerve Head.

Glaucoma is a progressive disease and the leading cause of irreversible blindness. The limited therapeutics available are only able to manage the common risk factor of glaucoma, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), indicating a great need for understanding the cellular mechanisms behind optic nerve head (ONH) damage during disease progression. Here we review the known inflammatory and fibrotic changes occurring in the ONH. In addition, we describe a novel mechanism of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and transforming growth factor beta-2 (TGFβ2) signaling crosstalk in the cells of the ONH that cont

Optic disc area frequency distribution in a large sample of retinographic images.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new method to estimate the frequency distribution of optic nerve disc area, using digital retinographic images. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We analysed 492 023 fundus images obtained with seven fundus cameras, mainly in Caucasian subjects. They were grouped by resolution and zoom. They were automatically segmented by identifying the inner edge of the Elschnig scleral ring. For this purpose, a neural network trained by deep learning previously described was used. The number of pixels contained within the segmentation and their frequency distribution were calculated. The resu

Structural Abnormalities of the Optic Nerve and Retina in Huntington's Disease Pre-Clinical and Clinical Settings.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by a polyglutamine expansion in the huntingtin protein. HD-related pathological remodelling has been reported in HD mouse models and HD carriers. In this study, we studied structural abnormalities in the optic nerve by employing Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) in pre-symptomatic HD carriers of Caucasian origin. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate ultrastructural changes in the optic nerve of the well-established R6/2 mouse model at the symptomatic stage of the disease. We fou

Clinical characteristics of glaucoma patients with various risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is multifactorial, but the interrelationship between risk factors and structural changes remains unclear. Here, we adjusted for confounding factors in glaucoma patients with differing risk factors, and compared differences in structure and susceptible areas in the optic disc and macula. METHODS: In 458 eyes with glaucoma, we determined confounding factors for intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), axial length (AL), LSFG-measured ocular blood flow (OBF), which was assessed with laser speckle flowgraphy-measured mean blur rate in the tissue area (MT)
