In-Orbit Calibration of Phase Retardance for Channeled Spectropolarimeter.

The phase retardance of the optical system (PROS) is a crucial factor limiting the accuracy of the Stokes vector reconstruction for the channeled spectropolarimeter. The dependence on reference light with a specific angle of polarization (AOP) and the sensitivity to environmental disturbance brings challenges to the in-orbit calibration of PROS. In this work, we propose an instant calibration scheme with a simple program. A function with a monitoring role is constructed to precisely acquire a reference beam with a specific AOP. Combined with numerical analysis, high-precision calibration witho…

Symmetry Control of Unconventional Spin-Orbit Torques in IrO2.

Spin-orbit torques generated by a spin current are key to magnetic switching in spintronic applications. The polarization of the spin current dictates the direction of switching required for energy-efficient devices. Conventionally, the polarizations of these spin currents are restricted to be along a certain direction due to the symmetry of the material allowing only for efficient in-plane magnetic switching. Unconventional spin-orbit torques arising from novel spin current polarizations, however, have the potential to switch other magnetization orientations such as perpendicular magnetic ani…

Spin-orbit optical Hall effect in π-vector fields.

Given the tremendous increase of data in digital era, vector vortex light with strongly coupled spin and orbital angular momenta of photons have attracted great attention for high-capacity optical applications. To fully utilize such rich degrees of freedom of light, it is highly anticipated to separate the coupled angular momentum with a simple but powerful method, and the optical Hall effect becomes a promising scheme. Recently, the spin-orbit optical Hall effect has been proposed in terms of general vector vortex light using two anisotropic crystals. However, angular momentum separation for …

A novel case of recurrent cylindroma of the orbit.

Cylindroma is a rare benign tumour of eccrine origin that has not been previously reported within the orbit. We report a case of a recurrent orbital cylindroma following incomplete excision. A 75-year-old female presented with a recurrent left inferomedial orbital mass. Seven years prior a mass of the same location was excised and on histology at the time resembled a cylindroma. The patient had a history of lung adenocarcinoma. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) found the recurrent mass to be a well-circumscribed lesion anterior to the inferior oblique. The mass was subsequently excised. Histolo…

Polarization helicity and the optical spin-orbit Hall effect.

The optical spin-orbit Hall effect manifests the separation of the spin angular momentum (SAM) and the orbital angular momentum (OAM), yet it can be obtained for the radially polarized light and well controlled by the initial phase of the polarization state which leads to the twist of its distribution. In this paper, we introduce the polarization helicity to characterize the effect of the initial phase of the polarization states in the optical spin-orbit Hall effect. We find the polarization helicity of the radial polarization state can be modulated by changing its initial phase, and the polar…

[Extraocular silicone oil migration to orbit: a case report].

Silicone oil insertion is a common modality in vitreoretinal surgeries after ocular perforating injury. It needs surgical removal after several months. Extraocular silicone oil migration to orbit and eyelid is uncommon complication. We reports a case of silicone oil migration to orbit and eyelid. A 41-year-old male presented with left upper eyelid swelling following silicone oil injection 3 years before admission. Orbital computed tomography scan showed multiple high-density well-defined masses in vitreous, left upper eyelid and orbit. We diagnosed the patient with orbital and eyelid mass, mea…

Electrically tunable spin-orbit interaction in an InAs nanosheet.

We report an experimental study of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in an epitaxially grown free-standing InAs nanosheet in a dual-gate field-effect device. Gate-transfer characteristic measurements show that independent tuning of the carrier density in the nanosheet and the potential difference across the nanosheet can be efficiently achieved with the use of a dual gate. The quantum transport characteristics of the InAs nanosheet are investigated by magnetoconductance measurements at low temperatures. It is shown that the electron transport in the nanosheet can be tuned from the weak antiloca…

Spin-orbit periodic conversion in a gradient-index fiber.

The characteristics of the cylindrical vector beam (CVB) and the cylindrical vector vortex beam (CVVB) in a radial gradient-index (GRIN) fiber are analyzed on the basis of the generalized Huygens-Fresnel principle. The CVB and CVVB exhibit periodic and stable transmission characteristics in the radial GRIN fiber. In the beam with a vortex phase (CVVB), the polarization changes and the spin angular momentum (SAM) is detected at the focal plane of the radial GRIN fiber. A spin-orbit periodic conversion is observed in the radial GRIN fibers. Finally, the SAM expression of partially coherent light…

Ultrashort spin-orbit torque generated by femtosecond laser pulses.

To realize the very objective of spintronics, namely the development of ultra-high frequency and energy-efficient electronic devices, an ultrafast and scalable approach to switch magnetic bits is required. Magnetization switching with spin currents generated by the spin-orbit interaction at ferromagnetic/non-magnetic interfaces is one of such scalable approaches, where the ultimate switching speed is limited by the Larmor precession frequency. Understanding the magnetization precession dynamics induced by spin-orbit torques (SOTs) is therefore of great importance. Here we demonstrate generatio…

Vascular lesions of the pediatric orbit: A radiological walkthrough.

Vascular anomalies of the pediatric orbit represent a heterogeneous group that include both vascular tumors and vascular malformations. The disorder may initially be silent and then associated with symptoms and/or function damage, depending on the type of vascular anomaly and its extension. Vascular tumors include benign, locally aggressive (or borderline) and malignant forms while vascular malformations are divided into "simple", "combined" and syndromic, or "low flow" or "high flow". Both entities can arise in isolation or as part of syndromes. In this review, we describe the imaging finding…

IgG4-related disease of the orbit in an infant.

IgG4-related disease is a chronic fibroinflammatory disorder that is becoming increasingly recognized in the pediatric population. The orbit is one of the most commonly affected sites. We present the youngest case of IgG4-related ophthalmic disease in the literature, with an immunodeficiency phenotype associated with a homozygous IRAK-4 variant gene. We also review the clinical and histological features in children with IgG4-related ophthalmic disease. In addition to the young age of presentation, the case is unique for absence of lacrimal gland involvement, dural enhancement on magnetic reson…

Impacted wisdom tooth in the floor of the orbit.

Identification and management of ectopic supplemental tooth in anatomically complex areas such as the floor of orbit are challenging. This arises from the rarity and lack of consensus over management. The situation gets complex when there is an evidence of follicular pathology such as dentigerous cyst. In this report, a case of maxillary third molar associated with maxillary sinus and a distomolar in association with the floor of orbit medially to the inferior-orbital canal is presented. The surgical management of the condition is presented.

Bilateral symmetric lipomatosis of the orbit in Madelung's disease.

Madelung's disease is a rare benign systemic lipomatosis, which often presents in the head, neck and upper trunk regions. The appearance of symmetrical, excessive adipose tissue in the subcutaneous layer is its clinical characteristic. Orbital involvement is unusual with only a few cases reported previously. In this study, we describe the clinical and radiological features of Madelung's disease in the orbits. A 42-year-old man with alcohol addiction presented with chronic bilateral masses of the lower eyelids and proptosis. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed excessive symmetrical non-encapsu…
