The effect of endogenous skin bacteria on burn wound infection.

Burn wound sepsis can be due to exogenous or endogenous bacteria. When rare organisms cause infection, exogenous sources are implicated. This sets into motion hospital infection control team searches, which are both exhausting and harassing to patients and staff. This study examines the skin bacteria present at admission and the frequency of endogenous infection in burn patients. Sixty-two patients with burns up to 92% of the total body surface area underwent unburned skin bacterial surveillance on admission and at weekly intervals using RODAC contact plates. Burn wounds were biopsied for quan

Turn-on luminescence from molecular rotor realignment in metal-organic framework thin films.

Sub-unit motion within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers unique opportunities for nanoscale sensing. However, achieving controlled partial rotation of bulky linkers remains a significant challenge. In this study, a 50-fold luminescence enhancement is observed from a MOF thin film when intra-pore solvent flow orients the linker chromophores. These MOF thin films can be prepared via a facile drop-casting method on various substrates. The MOFs structure consists of zinc-coordinated layers containing rotatable chromophores, separated by pillar molecules. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray sca

Magneto-Optically-Propelled Superhydrophobic Sponge for Efficient Volatile Organic Compounds Adsorption and Evaporation and Water Surface Transport.

As human activities intensify, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water pose growing threats to human health, ecosystems, and environmental stability. Conventional photothermal superhydrophobic sponges have shown promise in adsorbing and evaporating VOCs, but their effectiveness is limited by stationary adsorption and relatively low efficiency. Here, we introduce a photothermal-magnetic driven superhydrophobic sponge, synthesized with Fe3O4 and TiN nanoparticles, designed to significantly enhance both the mobility and adsorption capacity of VOCs. The Fe3O4 component endows the sponge with ma

Rostro-caudal organization of the human posterior superior temporal sulcus revealed by connectivity profiles.

The posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) plays an important role in biological motion perception but is also thought to be essential for speech and facial processing. However, although there are many previous investigations of distinct functional modules within the pSTS, the functional organization of the pSTS in its full functional heterogeneity has not yet been established. Here we applied a connectivity-based parcellation strategy to delineate the human pSTS subregions based on distinct anatomical connectivity profiles and divided it into rostral and caudal subregions using diffusion t

Predictive fatigue-aware human-robot collaboration: a real-time, open-source ROS 2 instantiation of a three-module human-centric digital twin framework on a standard cobot.

Industry 5.0 cobotics calls for collaborative robots that adapt to the operator's physical and cognitive state in real time. Most current industrial deployments remain reactive, responding only after explicit commands and ignoring the operator's psychophysiological condition. The three-module Human-Centric Digital Twin (HCDT) framework establishes the upstream perception-and-reasoning architecture for such systems using Vision-Language Models, and identifies closed-loop feedback and physical-assistance mechanisms as the natural next layer in the framework's development. Building on that founda

Self-paced DenseNet with boundary constraint for automated multi-organ segmentation on abdominal CT images.

Automated multi-organ segmentation on abdominal CT images may replace or complement manual segmentation for clinical applications including image-guided radiation therapy. However, the accuracy of auto-segmentation is challenged by low image contrast, large spatial and inter-patient anatomical variations. In this study, we propose an end-to-end segmentation network, termed self-paced DenseNet, for improved multi-organ segmentation performance, especially for the difficult-to-segment organs. Specifically, a learning-based attention mechanism and dense connection block are seamlessly integrated

Motile Cilia in Female and Male Reproductive Tracts and Fertility.

Motile cilia are evolutionarily conserved organelles. In humans, multiciliated cells (MCCs), assembling several hundred motile cilia on their apical surface, are components of the monolayer epithelia lining lower and upper airways, brain ventricles, and parts of the reproductive tracts, the fallopian tube and uterus in females, and efferent ductules in males. The coordinated beating of cilia generates a force that enables a shift of the tubular fluid, particles, or cells along the surface of the ciliated epithelia. Uncoordinated or altered cilia motion or cilia immotility may result in subfert

Some Unusual Neuropsychological Syndromes: Somatoparaphrenia, Akinetopsia, Reduplicative Paramnesia, Autotopagnosia.

Some unusual neuropsychological syndromes are rarely reported in the neuropsychological literature. This paper presents a review of four of these unusual clinical syndromes: (1) somatoparaphrenia (delusional belief in which a patient states that the limb contralateral to a brain pathology, does not belong to him/her); (2) akinetopsia (cortical syndrome in which patient losses the ability to perceive visual motion); (3) reduplicative paramnesia (believe that a familiar place, person, object, or body part has been duplicated); and (4) autotopagnosia (disturbance of body schema involving the loss

[Gastroesophageal reflux as a cause of vocal dysfunction].

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD), is characterized by a paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords during inspiration, and occurs predominantly in young women. Common symptoms are cough, wheezing, episodic dyspnea, and inspiratory stridor. The true incidence and course of the disease are unknown, and it is usually self limited. It can coexist with, or mimic refractory asthma. Psychological disorders were thought to be the principal cause, subsequently multiple organic diseases have also been reported, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Diagnosis is made by clinical suspicion and direct obs

Sonographic sliding sign in localization of right upper quadrant mass.

Sonographic sliding sign is the observation of dynamic motion of a mass against adjacent organs during respiratory movement or extrinsic pressure. We applied this sign for prospective study in nine patients, each of whom had a large posterior right upper abdominal mass arising from the liver, kidney, or adrenal gland. The sign was found to be very reliable as a criterion for the localization of the origin of the mass in all patients except in the following two cases: a Wilm's tumor that invaded the retroperitoneum and posterior abdominal wall was regarded as a retroperitoneal tumor invading th

[Antiemetic properties of levo-sulpiride].

Levo-sulpiride is a substituted benzamide with antiemetic activity 3-8 times more potent than the racemic form and the d-isomer. Its mode of action is partially central (inhibition of dopaminergic receptors at the trigger zone for vomiting) and partially peripheral (normalization of motor activity of stomach and gall-bladder). The drug was found effective in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced and post-operative vomiting as well as in the treatment of nausea and vomiting during hepatic, biliary and gastroduodenal disorders, organic and functional dyspepsia, motion sickness and vertigo. Levo

Observations on the Tullio phenomenon.

Vestibular responses (vertigo, nystagmus-like eye movements) to acoustic stimuli are known as the "Tullio phenomenon". Detailed electro-oculographic analysis of this reaction, as observed in a 30-year-old patient, revealed the following: a maximum amplitude of eye movement (mainly vertical) was achieved by sine wave bursts of high intensity, a frequency of 500 to 1000 Hz and a duration of 100 ms. The ocular deviation was composed of a fast initial component, followed by a slower resetting movement that was often divided into two parts of different velocities. At longer stimulus durations (more

The U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory Virtual Reality Vection System.

INTRODUCTION: Vection is a stationary individual's illusory experience of self-motion. This illusory self-motion is operationally important for aviation, particularly military aviation, since vection is a dramatic example of spatial disorientation (SD), which is an individual's failure to correctly sense the aircraft's position, motion, and/or attitude with respect to the fixed coordinate system of the Earth's surface and its gravitational vertical. Notably, SD is a major cause of fatal aviation mishaps, and the visual system is particularly prone to provoking vection. This article describes t

Understanding Gait, Its Neurophysiologic Control and Systematic Localisation of Gait Abnormalities.

Gait analysis is a crucial diagnostic tool in neurology and rehabilitation, reflecting the intricate coordination between the central and peripheral nervous systems, musculoskeletal structures, and sensory feedback mechanisms. This article integrates the neurophysiological basis of gait, emphasising the role of central pattern generators in the spinal cord and the mesencephalic locomotor region in regulating initiation, speed, and adaptability (1). Gait disorders result from disruptions in various neural structures, including the cerebellum, basal ganglia, motor and sensory pathways, and the p

X,Y, and Z: A bird's eye view on light pollution.

The global increase in light pollution is being viewed with growing concern, as it has been reported to have negative effects ranging from the individual to the ecosystem level.Unlike movement on the ground, flying and swimming allows vertical motion. Here, we demonstrate that flight altitude change is crucial to the perception and susceptibility of artificial light at night of air-borne organisms. Because air-borne species can propagate through the airspace and easily across ecotones, effects might not be small-scale. Therefore, we propose including airspace as a vital habitat in the concept

Positional nystagmus in middle ear cholesteatoma with labyrinthine fistula.

Chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma can cause erosion of the dense labyrinthine bone overlying the inner ear organs, and this labyrinthine fistula allows pressure or mass-induced motion of the underlying perilymphatic and endolymphatic compartment, evoking vestibular symptoms. While the mechanism of a positive fistula test, which is conducted by increasing or decreasing the external auditory canal pressure, has been well established, the mechanism underlying positional nystagmus in labyrinthine fistula has not been discussed yet. In the present study, we propose a new hypothesis accounting

Unusual combination of lesions of the traumatic hand: closed central slip laceration of the extensor and interphalangeal thumb joint's dislocation (a case report).

From the functional standpoint, the hand is one of the most important organs of the body. However, its significance depends largely upon the pincer action of the thumb-index. The management of traumatic lesions of the hand is nowadays' subject of numerous scientific discussions. We present here the case of a patient with a recent laceration of the central slip of the extensor tendon with boutonniere deformity linked to a dislocated interphalangeal thumb of the same hand with a loss of force of the clip thumb and index finger. This combination is a rare lesional of the traumatic hand that has n

Functional organization and conformational dynamics of the nicotinic receptor: a plausible structural interpretation of myasthenic mutations.

To understand the structural causes of myasthenic mutations, molecular models of the nicotinic acetycholine receptor were first constructed. Then, the gating transition between resting and open conformation was investigated in silico by normal mode analysis using a physically meaningful description of protein flexibility. This analysis revealed a global quaternary twist motion that opens the ion pore. Second, it was found that most (24/27) of the spontaneous mutations known to cause congenital myasthenia (and autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy) are located either at the interfa

Neurobiological responses of fish to altered gravity conditions: a review.

In vertebrates (including man), altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunctions of the inner ears, based on an irregular dislocation of the inner ear otoliths from the corresponding sensory epithelia. This dislocation leads to an illusionary tilt, since the otolithic inputs are not confirmed by the other sensory organs, which results in an intersensory conflict. Vertebrates in the orbit therefore face severe orientation problems. In humans, the intersensory conflict may additionally lead to a malaise, commonly referred to as space motion sickness (SMS).
