INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) occurs as a complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Management of clinically significant NHO remains variable. Complications of mature NHO include limitation of mobility. The effect of the extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on range of motion at hip and knee, and function in patients with TBI with chronic NHO was investigated.
METHODS: A series of single-case studies applying ESWT to chronic NHO at the hip or knee of 11 patients with TBI were undertaken at a rehabilitation hospital. Participants received four applications of

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Heterotopic ossification (HO), the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissue, is a known complication of spinal cord injury (SCI). Prior studies have identified several associated factors but are limited by small sample sizes and provide little insight into the burden on the healthcare system. This study will assesses national trends in hospitalizations for SCI-induced HO in the U.S. from 2016 to 2021 and identifies demographic and clinical factors associated with HO in hospitalized SCI patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective, population-based cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Healt

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) in the Bryan cervical arthroplasty group and to identify associations between preoperative factors and the development of HO.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of clinical and radiological data on patients who underwent single-level cervical arthroplasty with Bryan prosthesis between January 2005 and September 2007. Patients were postoperatively followed-up at 1, 3, 6, 12 months and every year thereafter. The clinical assessment was conducted using Odom's criteria. The presence of

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication following hip arthroplasty that can limit hip range of motion. Oral direct factor Xa (FXa) inhibitors are commonly used anticoagulants after arthroplasty; however, they have a high risk of local bleeding and hematoma formation, which are significant triggers for HO formation. To our knowledge, there is no evidence regarding whether FXa inhibitors use will increase HO incidence following hip arthroplasty.
METHODS: In this retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study conducted at a national orthopaedic center in Shanghai

OBJECTIVE Heterotopic ossification (HO) has been reported following total hip, knee, cervical, and lumbar arthroplasty, as well as following posterolateral lumbar fusion using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). Data regarding HO following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with rhBMP-2 are sparse. A subanalysis was done of the prospective, multicenter, investigational device exemption trial that compared rhBMP-2 on an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) versus allograft in ACDF for patients with symptomatic single-level cervical degenerative disc disease. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is defined as the formation of bone tissues outside the bones, such as in the muscles. Currently, the mechanism of HO is still unclear. Tendon stem cells (TSCs) play important roles in the occurrence and development of HO. The inflammatory microenvironment dominated by macrophages also plays an important role in the course of HO. The commonly used clinical treatment methods, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and radiotherapy, have relatively large side effects, and more efficient treatment methods are needed in clinical practice. INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a complex pathology often observed in combat injured casualties who have sustained severe, high energy polytraumatic extremity injuries. Once HO has developed, prophylactic therapies are limited outside of surgical excision. Tourniquet-induced ischemia injury (IR) exacerbates trauma-mediated musculoskeletal tissue injury, inflammation, osteogenic progenitor cell development and HO formation. Others have shown that focal adhesion kinase-2 (FAK2) plays a key role in regulating early inflammatory signaling events. Therefore, we hypothesized that targ

Context: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a frequent complication of spinal cord injury, is occasionally caused by neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO). In most cases of NHO, the hip joint is affected. Herein, we present a case of paraplegia following radiation-induced myelopathy that presented with left leg swelling due to DVT in the common iliac vein (CIV) caused by venous compression by NHO on the anterior lower lumbar spine.Findings: A 28-year-old man with complete paraplegia due to radiation-induced myelopathy presented with left lower extremity swelling 6 years after the onset of paraple

PURPOSE: Most of the previous meta-analyses examining the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on preventing heterotopic ossification (HO) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) have separately analyzed Brooker's classification I, II, III, and IV which may misrepresent their ordinal nature. We therefore applied a Bayesian network meta-regression that incorporates the ordinal nature of Brooker's classification to more robustly assess NSAID efficacy and determine the optimal regimen.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulceration, pyogenic arthritis, and hip heterotopic ossification are complications encountered in spinal cord injury patients. The Girdlestone procedure has been established as an effective treatment modality for hip pathology in this population and is particularly efficacious when a muscle flap is used to fill the femoral resection defect. We previously reported its use as a 3-stage procedure. Through time, experience was gained, and consequently, our technique has evolved to a 1-stage procedure.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all spinal cord injury patients who ha

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a genetic disease characterized by extraskeletal heterotopic ossification (HO). The underlying mechanism is the aberrant activation of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling caused by a point mutation in the ACVR1 gene. Although FOP is an ultra-rare disease, its symptoms severely impair patients' daily activities and quality of life. Furthermore, the HO is also observed in broader clinical contexts, including major surgeries and trauma, highlighting the significance of its study. We have previously reported that rapamycin suppressed Activin-A-

INTRODUCTION: Progressive fibrous dysplasia ossification (FOP) is a rare genetic disease characterized by congenital bone malformations and soft tissue masses that progress to heterotopic ossification. Congenital great toe deformity and progressive heterotopic ossifications with an anatomical and temporal pattern are the two classical clinical characteristics of FOP. We present a unique case of FOP characterized by mandibular angle fascial contracture and back and iliopsoas muscle ossification managed via surgery in a 13 year old girl.

Twenty-nine of 591 head-injured adults (4.9%) sustained concomitant injuries about the hip. Three hip injuries were undetected during initial hospitalization (10%). Sixteen patients (55%) developed varying amounts of heterotopic ossification about the injured hip. Eleven of 23 hips (41%) treated by nonoperative methods developed heterotopic ossification. Six hips underwent open reduction and five developed heterotopic bone (83%). The severity of injury, especially central acetabular and posterior fracture-dislocations, increased the occurrence and amount of heterotopic bone. Ipsilateral hemipl

Heterotopic ossification is a pathological ossification of soft tissues. It is a benign, recurring disease with an unpredictable onset. We here report the case of a patient treated for a fracture of the left tibial tray with installation of a screwed plate. Two months after surgery the patient had a stiff left knee. Standard radiological examination showed ossification of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) confirmed by tomodensitometry. We do not currently know which factors determine the presence of tendon and ligamentous ossification. Although clinicians often prescribe prophylactic drugs,

INTRODUCTION: Exaggerated inflammatory response is one of the main mechanisms underlying heterotopic ossification (HO). It has been suggested that the antifibrinolytic drug tranexamic acid (TXA) can exert a significant anti-inflammatory effect during orthopaedic surgery. However, no prospective studies have yet investigated the effects of TXA on HO recurrence in patients following open elbow arthrolysis (OEA).
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Here, we present a protocol for a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness of TXA on HO recurrence after

Heterotopic ossification is a well-recognized complication of total hip arthroplasty. In a retrospective survey of 98 total hip arthroplasties in ankylosing spondylitis performed between 1970 and 1977, 39.8% showed some evidences of heterotopic ossification. Restriction of hip movements was noted in only two. Heterotopic ossification occurred within one year and was higher (64.6%) in patients with bilateral hip replacements if there was evidence of heterotopic bone formation in one hip. The complications were relatively high in hips with previous operations (55%); trochanteric bursitis (50%);

We present a case of 71-year-old man with bilateral hip neurogenic heterotopic ossificans following critical illness polyneuropathy as a complication of expanded dengue syndrome. His left hip was stiff and showed a circumferential ossific mass. After initial medical management, the patient underwent excision of ossific mass using posterior approach. For adequate excision, femoral head and neck were resected and a hybrid total hip arthroplasty was performed. The patient was followed up for 2 years and showed good clinical outcome without recurrence of heterotopic ossification. This case highlig
