COPD(Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a cause of chronic respiratory failure which leads to pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Not only chronic hypoxia but also low QOL(quality of life) due to dyspnea are shown to affect survival of COPD patients. HOT(Home Oxygen Therapy) is one of the most successful home therapy in Japan after the availability of health insurance in 1985. HOT is the only therapy to prolong life expectancy of COPD patients with chronic respiratory failure. This is the first report to evaluate transtracheal oxygen catheter (TTOC) use in a pediatric patient series. Seven pediatric patients (4 boys and 3 girls) received TTOCs in 2 tertiary care medical centers. The medical indications included bronchopulmonary dysplasia in 4 patients and tracheomalacia in the other 3. The average age at the time of placement was 22 months (range, 2 weeks to 37 months). PURPOSE: Our objective was to assess, retrospectively, the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in radiation proctitis in all patients who have completed treatment for this disease at the Fremantle Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit. This unit is the only one of its kind in Western Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of oxygen on apneas and sleep quality in patients with frequent central apneas during sleep.
DESIGN/SUBJECTS: Prospective intervention study of 20 consecutive patients with predominant central apnea identified from 570 patients referred for suspected sleep apnea syndrome. Sixteen patients had congestive heart failure and seven of them had a previous stroke. Three of the remaining four patients without heart failure had experienced a previous stroke, and one was being treated with morphine.

We report herein our experience with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure over a 3-year period. This report describes a patient with mucormycosis treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2). Arterial O2 tension (PaO2) during HBO2 was considerably lower (346 mm Hg) than expected (1,500 mm Hg) due to an inadvertent right main-stem intubation, which was not otherwise clinically evident. This case illustrates the influence of a large right-to-left shunt (Qs/Qt) on O2 loading during HBO2. We raise the question if routine hyperbaric treatment protocols are adequate to raise PaO2 in patients with large Qs/Qts.
