A spatial-temporal transmission model and early intervention policies of 2009 A/H1N1 influenza in South Korea.

We developed a spatial-temporal model of the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic in the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA), which is located in the north-west of South Korea and is the second-most complex metropolitan area worldwide. This multi-patch influenza model consists of a SEIAR influenza transmission model and flow model between two districts. This model is based on the daily confirmed cases of A/H1N1 influenza collected by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention from April 27 to September 15, 2009 and the daily commuting data from 33 districts of SMA reported in the 2010 Population

Student perceptions and understanding of urology in the United Kingdom - SPARK.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to urology in the United Kingdom (UK) remains limited despite its clinical relevance. Most prior studies on student awareness and attitudes predate the COVID-19 pandemic and include non-final-year students. This study evaluated final-year students’ awareness, preparedness, and perceptions of urology across UK medical schools. METHODS: A 17-item survey was disseminated to final-year students in the UK between (June-July 2025) one-month from beginning clinical practice with Medical Schools Council approval. Domains included demographics, understanding of urology, perceptio

Delivering home-based palliative care during COVID-19 in Taiwan: a qualitative study with interdisciplinary team members.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted palliative care globally, but its impact on home-based palliative care (HBPC) within universal healthcare systems, particularly in Asian contexts, remains understudied. Taiwan's National Health Insurance system supports a well-established HBPC program. This background offers a unique lens to examine how interdisciplinary teams adapted HBPC delivery during different pandemic phases. METHODS: This qualitative study used telephone-based semi-structured interviews with 14 HBPC providers from two medical centers: one in a rural area and one in an urban a

Meningococcal Disease in the Post-COVID-19 Era: A Time to Prepare.

The global invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) landscape changed considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic, as evidenced by decreased incidence rates due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, such as limited social contact, physical distancing, mask wearing, and hand washing. Vaccination rates were also lower during the pandemic relative to pre-pandemic levels. Although policymakers may have shifted their focus away from IMD vaccination programs to COVID-19 vaccination programs, strong arguments support implementation and prioritization of IMD vaccination programs; IMD cases have increased in some

Global Spread of Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses: Predicting Pandemics.

As successive epidemics have swept the world, the scientific community has quickly learned from them about the emergence and transmission of communicable diseases. Epidemics usually occur when health systems are unprepared. During an unexpected epidemic, health authorities engage in damage control, fear drives action, and the desire to understand the threat is greatest. As humanity recovers, policy-makers seek scientific expertise to improve their "preparedness" to face future events.Global spread of disease is exemplified by the spread of yellow fever from Africa to the Americas, by the sprea

A Review of the Changing Global Impact of Arthropod-Borne Virus Diseases and Recent Initiatives from the World Health Organization.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are RNA viruses that depend on transmission to humans and other vertebrates through the bites of infected mosquitoes, ticks, and sand flies. On March 31, 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Arbovirus Initiative identified the need for risk mapping as a crucial source of evidence for arbovirus disease surveillance and provided updated recommendations to improve current management. On May 20, 2025, the 78th World Health Assembly of the WHO adopted the Pandemic Agreement to highlight the importance of pandemic preparedness. The arbovirus diseases…

Refining the role of behavioural and social sciences in pandemic response post-COVID-19.

With the acute stage of COVID-19 behind us, reflection can inform future preparedness. During the pandemic, behavioural and social sciences often studied human behaviour through the lens of alignment with public health recommendations, implicitly treating concern and compliance as desirable and rational. While understandable, this emphasis was relatively narrow. Uncertainty, uneven risk distribution and competing values could have led to heterogeneous appraisals of risk and intervention benefit, even with the evidence available at the time. We show that engaging with the possibility that peopl

SARS-CoV-2 saltational events are recurrent and trace to persistent human infections.

SARS-CoV-2 evolution is characterized by gradual mutation accumulation but has been punctuated by rare yet impactful highly mutated variants. Whether such saltational jumps are a broad feature of SARS-CoV-2 evolution or rare anomalies remains unclear. We systematically investigate SARS-CoV-2 saltational evolution by developing a scalable framework to detect saltational events from 4.4 million high-quality viral genomes. Saltational events occurred at low but detectable rates during the pandemic and post-pandemic periods and across geographies. Their mutational signature closely matches that se

Research priorities for improved pandemic and epidemic intelligence.

Pandemic and epidemic intelligence integrates surveillance data with contextual knowledge to assess health risks and inform public health decisions. Although investments in surveillance and public health intelligence have accelerated innovation, research efforts remain thematically and geographically fragmented and the translation of insights into policy and practice is inconsistent. To address this gap, the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, in collaboration with global partners, conducted a research prioritisation exercise to identify key research gaps and opportunities. Using a

Hantavirus on the rise: clinical, virological, immunological, and public health perspectives.

Hantaviruses are enveloped, negative-sense RNA viruses. Rodents serve as natural reservoirs, and spillover into humans causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. While transmission typically occurs by inhaling aerosolized rodent excreta, the Andes virus variant is capable of human-to-human transmission. A recent outbreak involving a person-to-person transmission cluster aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has underscored the urgency of hantavirus preparedness. Immediate global pandemic risk remains low because sustained transmission requires prolonged close c

Improved efficacy of an influenza DNA vaccine through high-density microarray patch delivery.

Pandemic preparedness requires vaccine platforms that are fast to produce, thermostable and suitable for broad deployment. DNA vaccines are well suited to this task but have historically suffered from poor immunogenicity when delivered by conventional intramuscular (IM) injection. Here, we evaluated high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) delivery of a DNA vaccine encoding the influenza A/California/01/2009 (H1N1pdm09) haemagglutinin (HA) antigen. In vivo imaging of a luciferase reporter construct demonstrated earlier and higher expression following HD-MAP application compared to IM injection. …

Preparing for the Next Pandemic: Lessons from COVID-19's Impact on Child and Adolescent Health Inequities in Ghana.

The pandemic spared most children and adolescents in Ghana from severe clinical disease, but it exposed long-standing gaps in services and protection methods. Methods: We conducted a desk-based narrative review of peer-reviewed studies, national and international reports, and grey literature from January 2020 to May 2025. The evidence was organised across eight domains of child and adolescent well-being. Across mental health, gambling and other risky behaviours, access to health services, economic hardship and child labour, nutrition, education, early childhood development, and WASH, the pande
