[Panniculitis associated with severe alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency].

Genetically determined deficiency of alpha-1-antitrypsin, the primary serum protease inhibitor, can result in pulmonary emphysema or liver cirrhosis, and panniculitis may be an early symptom. A case of recurring panniculitis in a 29 year-old woman is described, which led to the diagnosis of severe alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (Pi ZZ). Serum alpha-1-antitrypsin levels should be measured in patients presenting with panniculitis.

Acalculous cholecystitis (panniculitis) associated with Weber-Christian disease.

Acalculous cholecystitis occurred in a patient with Weber-Christian disease. It reflected a panniculitis similar to that which developed in the orbit, abdominal cavity, and the retroperitoneal space.

Intra-abdominal panniculitis can mimic recurrent stomach carcinoma.

Carcinoma of the stomach is increasingly treated with chemotherapy. We describe two cases of intra-abdominal panniculitis in patients after laparotomy and chemotherapy for stomach carcinoma. Intra-abdominal panniculitis can result in mass lesions in the mesentery and omentum. The diagnosis should be considered in patients who have undergone chemotherapy for stomach carcinoma and who develop abdominal masses.

[X-ray computed tomographic aspects of mesenteric panniculitis].

Mesenteric panniculitis also known as lipodystrophy is an inflammatory condition of adipose tissue. A case of a 55 year old, female who presented a weight loss and a tender palpable mass located in the left flank is reported. CT patterns were not specific but might suggest the diagnosis: fatty mass, with a higher density than subcutaneous fat, located in the root of the mesentery and surrounding mesenteric vessels without distoting them. Intestinal loops were only pulled in periphery. This signs are not always present and even in this typical pattern mesenteric panniculitis could not be differ…

[Histologic chronology of eosinophilic migratory nodular panniculitis (gnathostomiasis)].

Twenty five patients with nodular migratory eosinophilic panniculitis (gnathostomiasis) were studied, several samples of skin were taken in different periods of evolution; and histologic criteria are established for the first time in literature. The histological picture was different and changed according to the day the biopsy was taken. Three parasites were recovered from the skin material showing all the features of generic gnathostoma.

Nodular nonsuppurative panniculitis associated with jejunoileal bypass surgery.

A 32-year-old woman underwent jejunoileal bypass surgery for morbid obesity. Her postoperative course was marked with many of the complications of this type of surgery. In addition, tender, erythematous nodules developed on her legs and abdomen that were grossly and microscopically consistent with nodular nonsuppurative panniculitis. She did not have any condition or disease previously reported to be associated with nodular nonsuppurative inflammation. The nodular panniculitis in this patient appears to be a new complication of small-bowel bypass surgery.
