Characterization of the protective response against a homologous challenge infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis in rats.

The protective response in rats against a homologous challenge infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis was characterized. In an initial infection with 1000 filariform larvae and migrating larvae (L(3)) of S. venezuelensis, the population of L(3) in the lungs on day 3 postinfection (PI), and that of adult worms in the small intestine on day 7 PI, were 180.8+/-14.5 and 336.8+/-70.7, respectively. The latter were gradually expelled towards day 42 PI. After the initial infection, the rats developed strong immunity against a homologous challenge infection as manifested by a marked reduction in w

Opisthorchis viverrini: partial success in adoptively transferring immunity with spleen cells and serum in the hamster.

Three groups of golden Syrian hamsters received intraperitoneally either, (1) 1 x 10(7) spleen cells, (2) 0.5 ml. serum or, (3) 1 x 10(7) spleen cells plus 0.5 ml. serum, from donors infected 6 weeks previously with 25 Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae, one day before and at the same time as challenge with 25 metacercariae. Three groups of control animals received the same quantities of spleen cells, serum or an admixture of both from normal non-infected donors in the same manner followed by challenge with 25 metacercariae. Animals were killed six weeks after challenge, livers and extrahepa

Simulated selection responses for breeding programs including resistance and resilience to parasites in Creole goats.

The Creole goat is a local breed used for meat production in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). As in other tropical countries, improvement of parasite resistance is needed. In this study, we compared predicted selection responses for alternative breeding programs with or without parasite resistance and resilience traits. The overall breeding goal included traits for production, reproduction, and parasite resilience and resistance to ensure a balanced selection outcome. The production traits were BW and dressing percentage (DP). The reproduction trait was fertility (FER), which was the number of

Some factors affecting prevalence of and immune responses to Schistosoma mansoni in schoolchildren in Gorgora, northwest Ethiopia.

There are population variations in human immune responses to infection with Schistosoma mansoni prior to and following treatment. The aims of the present study were a) to study some of the factors correlating with antibody levels against the parasite infection, b) to determine whether there were changes in antibody responses to the parasite in infected young people following drug treatment, and c) to identify some of the social, demographic and clinical factors associated with infection in this age group. The study population comprised 10 to 14 year old children attending Gorgora Primary Schoo

Cervical tumor caused by the sexually mature stage of Fasciola hepatica.

A 58-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic 5cm left anterior cervical tumor that had been present for over a year. Histological analysis revealed chronic inflammation and granuloma with giant cells surrounding Fasciola hepatica eggs. Fas2 antigen was detected in the tissue by immunohistochemistry. Serology for F. hepatica was positive, but stool examinations were negative and eosinophil count was normal. A month later, the tumor recurred, and an adult parasite was found during excision. The patient received triclabendazole, and after 6 months serology was negative. Erratic localization o

Schistosoma mansoni: effect of gossypol on infections in mice.

Gossypol, a toxic drug present in cotton seed oil, was subcutaneously injected into mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Injections were given daily over three 15 day-periods covering, respectively, schistosomula migration through skin and lungs, parasite establishment in the mesenteric veins and the schistosome sexual maturation phase. Worms were recovered by mesenteric perfusion and eggs were counted in livers and intestines 52 days after infection. Gossypol neither influenced schistosome development nor affected parasite fecundity. Schistosome-induced splenomegaly was not altered by goss

Ancylostoma ceylanicum: immunization with soluble worm extract and responses to challenge infection of dogs.

When dogs were immunized with soluble extract of adult Ancylostoma ceylanicum antigen, they were partially resistant to challenge infection in this model of human hookworm infection. Two immunizing doses, each of 1 mg protein suspended in Freund's complete adjuvant, were administered to one group of animals 1 and 3 weeks prior to infection with 5000 larvae. When compared with control dogs given the same infective dose, fecal egg excretion and intestinal adult worm burden in the immunized animals were reduced by 59 and 74%, respectively. Infection had no significant effect on hemoglobin concent

Spiculopteragia boehmi is the dominant abomasal nematode species in reindeer (Nordland County, Norway) sharing pasture with wild and domesticated ruminants.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites, especially those in the abomasum, are considered important production-limiting parasites of ruminants. Reindeer harbour many species of gastrointestinal parasites, and Ostertagia gruehneri, considered their dominant abomasal parasite, has been relatively extensively studied. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, species composition, and burdens of gastrointestinal parasites in a relatively southern flock of semi-domesticated reindeer in Duokta, Norway. In Duokta, a lower number of reindeer than domestic sheep share pastures, alongside an increasing

Environmental distribution of Echinococcus- and Taenia spp.-contaminated dog feces in Kyrgyzstan.

Recently, there have been epidemics of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in Kyrgyzstan. This study investigated 2 districts for the presence of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. and Echinococcus multilocularis eggs; species identity was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction in dog feces and the level of environmental contamination with parasite eggs in 2017–2018 was also investigated. In the Alay district 5 villages with a high reported annual incidence of AE of 162 cases per 100 000 and 5 villages in the Kochkor district which had a much lower incidence of 21 cases

Necator americanus in neonatally infected hamsters. The time-course of infection and antibody response to the surface antigens of L4 and adult worms.

Neonatal hamsters were infected with a hamster-adapted strain of Necator americanus, and the time-course of infection was followed by worm and faecal egg counts. Parasite eggs were first recorded during the 6th week of infection, increasing rapidly thereafter to peak in weeks 7-10. Male hamsters excreted more eggs than females, but both sexes were equally susceptible to infection and harboured comparable worm burdens. Faecal egg counts declined from week 10 onwards and this was associated with a loss of worms from animals with heavy infections. Low level infections were stable over the first 1

Functionally distinct T-helper cell phenotypes predict resistance to different types of parasites in a wild mammal.

The adaptive immune system is critical to an effective response to infection in vertebrates, with T-helper (Th) cells pivotal in orchestrating these responses. In natural populations where co-infections are the norm, different Th responses are likely to play an important role in maintaining host health and fitness, a relationship which remains poorly understood in wild animals. In this study, we characterised variation in functionally distinct Th responses in a wild population of Soay sheep by enumerating cells expressing Th-subset specific transcription factors and quantifying Th-associated c

Occurrence and control of equine strongyle nematode infections in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Widespread overuse of anthelmintics has produced a growing population of intestinal parasites resistant to control measures. A paradigm shift in equine parasite control is warranted to prevent continued resistance development and maintain equine health. Small strongyles, which are ubiquitous in horses, are currently the most important intestinal parasites of adult horses. Sustainable management programs consider the variation in egg shedding by individual horses, and varied risks associated with age, use, density, climate, and environment. To develop regional recommendations for Prince Edward

Hymenolepis nana: intestinal tissue phase in actively immunized mice.

We investigated the fate of the intestinal cestode Hymenolepis nana in immunized mice. Immunity was induced by infection with the parasite eggs. These immunized animals and unimmunized controls were then challenged with 50,000 H. nana eggs. The mice were killed 4 to 90 hr after challenge, and H. nana in the intestinal tissue were counted. At 4 hr after challenge the unimmunized and immunized animals had approximately equal numbers of oncospheres. By 12 hr there were fewer parasites in the immunized than in the unimmunized animals. At 90 hr, no H. nana were seen in the immunized mice, whereas i

Inverse Correlation of Th2-Specific Cytokines with Hepatic Egg Burden in S. mansoni-Infected Hamsters.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma spp., affects more than 250 million people worldwide. S. mansoni in particular affects the gastrointestinal tract and, through its eggs, induces a Th2 immune response leading to granuloma formation. The relationship between egg load and immune response is poorly understood. We investigated whether the quantity of parasitic eggs influences the immune response in S. mansoni-infected hamsters. The hepatic and intestinal egg load was assessed, and cytokine expression as well as the expression of three major egg-derived proteins were analyz

[Zoonotic parasitosis transmitted by dogs in the Chaco Salteño, Argentina].

Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma spp. are geohelmints that parasites dogs and can eventually affect humans, mainly children, causing visceral and cutaneous larva migrans respectively, constituting a serious public health problem. This study was carried out in two towns located in the xerophilous forest Chaco salteño where humans live closely with many animals, including dogs. Hematological values and anti-Toxocara canis antibodies, determined by ELISA in serum, were evaluated in 98 children from this area. Thirty-six children presented with eosinophilia of 10% or higher in peripheral blood. Twen

Aggregation in schistosomiasis: comparison of the relationships between prevalence and intensity in different endemic areas.

Distributions of the intensities of helminth infections within their host populations are invariably aggregated. In the case of the intestinal nematodes, the degrees of aggregation have been shown to be species specific, and constant for any given species despite geographical variation in study sites. This species-specific aggregation can be quantified and used as a tool in planning control interventions. One practical application is that the prevalence of infection can be used to predict the prevalence of heavy infection and thus the risks of morbidity. This paper investigates the patterns of

EFFECT OF FOUR DIFFERENT PRESERVATIVES ON AUTOFLUORENCE AND PEANUT AGGLUTIN LECTIN BINDING CHARACTERISTICS OF HAEMONCHUS EGGS.

Haemonchus contortus is the most economically important trichostrongyle nematode infecting various ruminants. Fecal egg counts are used to measure the intensity of trichostrongyle infections, but egg morphology alone can't differentiate Haemonchus eggs from the other less pathogenic trichostrongyle genera also infecting ruminants. The lectin, peanut agglutinin (PNA), binds selectively to Haemonchus eggs and has become a useful tool for diagnosing Haemonchus infections during fecal egg counts. Unfortunately, this binding is not stable when eggs are stored either within fecal samples or when iso

Effect of variable and low analytical recovery on sensitivity of Kato-Katz, Lutz and Ritchie methods for diagnosis of schistosomiasis.

While new immunological or molecular diagnostic methods for schistosomiasis are currently under development and evaluation, egg-detection methods remain the most widespread available tool despite their limitations to diagnose light infections. Thick fecal smear, or the Kato-Katz method (KK), is recommended for populational screening. Seeding experiments were conducted to evaluate and compare sensitivity of KK, spontaneous sedimentation (Lutz or Hoffmann, Pons & Janer) and ether/ethyl-acetate centrifugation (Ritchie) methods for diagnosis of individual patients. Groups of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100
