Heteropagus (parasitic) twins are rare congenital anomalies characterized by a malformed parasitic twin attached to an otherwise normally developed host. Epignathus is a rare oropharyngeal mass that may represent a fetus-in-fetu and can result in life-threatening airway obstruction. We report the case of a preterm male neonate presenting with 2 fetiform masses: an intraoral epignathus obstructing the airway and a maxillary mass causing ocular proptosis. Surgical resection of the intraoral mass at 7 days of age restored airway patency. Histopathologic examination confirmed fetus-in-fetu with di

Gall-inducing insects manipulate host plant development, redirecting cellular fate and physiological processes to form novel structures. This phenomenon is even more intriguing when the host itself is a holoparasitic plant with minimal photosynthetic capacity. In the stem of Cuscuta campestris, the weevil Smicronyx madaranus forms galls that unexpectedly activate photosynthesis, in contrast to the typical suppression of photosynthetic activity observed in leaf-derived galls. This reversal of the usual source-to-sink transition highlights a unique form of insect-induced organogenesis. To elucid

Protease inhibitors play crucial roles in parasite development and survival, counteracting the potentially damaging immune responses of their vertebrate hosts. However, limited information is currently available on protease inhibitors from schistosomes and food-borne trematodes. Future characterization of these molecules is important not only to expand knowledge on parasitic fluke biology but also to determine whether they represent novel vaccine and/or drug targets. Moreover, protease inhibitors from flukes may represent lead compounds for the development of a new range of therapeutic agents

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malaria is caused by the infection and proliferation of parasites from the genus Plasmodium in red blood cells (RBCs). A free Plasmodium parasite, or merozoite, released from an infected RBC must invade another RBC host cell to sustain a blood-stage infection. Here, we review recent advances on RBC invasion by Plasmodium merozoites, focusing on specific molecular interactions between host and parasite.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work highlights the central role of host-parasite interactions at virtually every stage of RBC invasion by merozoites. Biophysical experiments have fo…

Helminth parasites have evolved diverse molecular mechanisms that facilitate their establishment, growth and reproduction inside an immunologically hostile environment. Thus, the physiological interactions during the course of the immune response to helminths are complex. Infection induces antigen-specific recognition by the immune system, which is consequently charged with the responsibility of marshalling the appropriate effector responses necessary to destroy the parasite, or at the very least inhibit its progression. Obviously, the immune system should accomplish this task while minimizing…

Cystatins, together with stefins and kininogens, are members of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors (CPI) present across the animal and plant kingdoms. Their role in parasitic organisms may encompass both essential developmental processes and specific interactions with the parasite's vector and/or final host. We summarise information gathered on three cystatins from the human filarial nematode Brugia malayi (Bm-CPI-1, -2 and -3), and contrast them those expressed by other parasites and by the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Bm-CPI-2 differs from C. elegans cys…

The nematode parasites that cause human lymphatic filariasis survive for long periods in their vascular habitats despite continual exposure to host cells. Platelets do not adhere to blood-borne microfilariae, and thrombo-occlusive phenomena are not observed in patients with circulating microfilariae. We studied the ability of microfilariae to inhibit human platelet aggregation in vitro. Brugia malayi microfilariae incubated with human platelets caused dose-dependent inhibition of agonist-induced platelet aggregation, thromboxane generation, and serotonin release. As few as one microfilaria per…

Fifty-five blue wildebeest ( Connochaetes taurinus ) were shot for parasite recovery at approximately monthly intervals during a period of 13 months in the Kruger National Park. Thirteen nematode species, 4 cestode species, 1 trematode, the larvae of 5 oestrid flies, 3 lice species, 7 ixodid tick species, 1 mite species and the nymphae of a pentastomid were recovered. The seasonal prevalence of 8 nematodes, 2 cestodes, the larvae of 4 oestrid flies, 2 lice and 4 ixodid tick species was determined. The endo- and ectoparasite burdens of 7 black wildebeest ( Connochaetes gnou ) shot in the Golden

Monogenea (Platyhelminthes), mainly gill and fin ectoparasites of fish, are often recognized as host specific and morphologically and ecologically diverse. These parasites exhibit high species diversity at the level of host species or individual fish specimens. Using case studies, especially those widely performed in Dactylogyrus parasitizing cyprinoid fish, this article presents current knowledge on the ecology and evolution of congeneric gill monogeneans. The important aspects of the ecology of congeneric monogeneans are highlighted, in particular: host specificity expressed at several host …

Within this comprehensive analysis we demonstrated that (i) parasites contribute to modulating the host microbiome through both successful and unsuccessful infection, (ii) when infection is successful, the host microbiome varies with parasite genotype due to genotype-dependent variation in parasite immunomodulation, a …

Intracellular parasitism often results in gene loss, genome reduction, and dependence upon the host for cellular functioning. Rozellomycota is a clade comprising many such parasites and is related to the diverse, highly reduced, animal parasites, Microsporidia. We sequenced the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of Paramicrosporidium saccamoebae [Rozellomycota], an intranuclear parasite of amoebae. A canonical fungal mitochondrial genome was recovered from P. saccamoebae that encodes genes necessary for the complete oxidative phosphorylation pathway including Complex I, differentiating it from …

Many animal species can carry considerable burdens of ectoparasites: parasites living on the outside of a host's body. Ectoparasite infestation can decrease host survival, but the magnitude and even direction of survival effects can vary depending on the type of ectoparasite and the nature and duration of the association. When ectoparasites also serve as vectors of pathogens, the effects of ectoparasite infestation on host survival have the potential to alter disease dynamics by regulating host populations and stabilizing transmission. We quantified the impact of larval Ixodes scapularis tick …

Parasitic protozoa are among the most important pathogens worldwide. Diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis, amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and trypanosomiasis affect millions of people. Humans are constantly threatened by infections caused by these pathogens. Parasites engage a plethora of surface and secreted molecules to attach to and enter mammalian cells. The secretion of lytic enzymes by parasites into host organs mediates critical interactions because of the invasion and destruction of interstitial tissues, enabling parasite migration to other sites within the hosts. Extracell…

Hundred and forty stool samples obtained from fourth classes (10 years of age) of the primary school students were examined for intestinal parasites. In addition, effect of education and variety of education on parasitic diseases were investigated. Of the 140 students 65% were found to be positive for intestinal parasites. Ascaris lumbricoides 15.7%, Trichuris trichiura 22.85%, Giardia intestinalis 7.14%, Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichuris trichiura 15.7%, Giardia intestinalis + Trichuris trichiura 3.57% were found. The infested students were treated with antiparasitic drugs, and were educated f…

While studying the population ecology of cattle warble flies (Diptera, Hypodermatidae) in Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Mongolia a firm internal regulatory system, determining the population density of parasites and operating on the principle of negative feedback, was demonstrated. The negative binomial distribution proved to be a suitable model in other parasite groups as well. The internal regulatory systems are common consistent patterns in the parasite-host relationship with specific parasites. These consistent patterns and the methodical approach to them are of wider importance not…
