PURPOSE OF STUDY: Oncology of the parotid region is rich and varied, like its components. During his career, the ENT surgeon may come across such an exceptional tumor as osteolipoma. The aim of this study was to describe the rarity and the etiopathogeny of osteolipoma with parapharyngeal location.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We had the opportunity to find this uncommon tumor in a 21-year-old female patient. The mass located in the parotid region was hard, barely mobile and at first looked like a parotid tumor. Total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was performed. It revealed a stony and

Carotid body tumors or carotid body paragangliomas, are rare, highly vascular neuroendocrine neoplasms originating from the paraganglionic cells of the carotid body situated near the adventitial layer of the carotid bifurcation. Although they typically exhibit slow growth and benign behavior, their close proximity to the neurovascular structures of the neck poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Timely recognition through clinical examination and imaging studies is crucial for establishing the diagnosis and improving the prognosis. We present the case of an 84-year-old male with a progre

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) is a recently described salivary gland carcinoma that resembles the secretory carcinoma of the breast and is characterised by t(12;15) (q13;q25) translocation, which results in an ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion product. On cytomorphology, it is characterised by papillary fragments, clusters, and singly dispersed tumour cells. These tumour cells are large and have abundant vacuolated cytoplasm. Acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland is the most common differential diagnosis of MASC. Other differentials include mucoepidermoid carcinoma, salivary duct carc

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign neoplasms of salivary glands. The simultaneous homolateral occurrence of these tumors in salivary glands is exceedingly rare.
CASE REPORT: An adult female presenting to our OPD with the swelling of right-sided preauricular and submandibular regions was diagnosed with the pleomorphic adenoma based on fine needle aspiration cytology. The patient was subjected to the excision of both swellings under general anesthesia. Postoperative facial nerve functions were within normal limits and final histopathology confirmed pleomorphic adenoma involving both

Fine needle aspiration is frequently used as the initial diagnostic procedure in the work-up of head and neck lesions, including soft tissue masses and salivary gland neoplasms. Giant cell tumors (GCTs), both osseous and extraosseous, are benign tumors that occur, albeit rarely, in the head and neck region. Extraosseous GCTs may be further classified based on their tissue of origin and specific anatomic location. Regardless of location, giant cell tumors are morphologically similar and share cytologic and histologic diagnostic criteria. Evaluation of imaging is therefore essential to the corre

Salivary gland swellings can result from tumors, an inflammatory process or cysts. It can sometimes be difficult to establish; whether pathology arises from the salivary gland itself or adjacent structures. Neoplasms of the salivary glands account for less than 1% of all tumors, 3-5% of all head and neck tumors and benign pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of minor salivary glands arising de novo is very rare. PA is the most common tumor of the salivary gland. While the majority arises from the parotid gland, only a small percentage arises from the buccal minor salivary gland. A case of PA of minor sali

Extracranial meningiomas of the head and neck region are rare neoplasms, the majority being a secondary location of a primary intracranial tumour. We herewith report three rare cases of extracranial meningiomas, located in the temporal muscle, parotid gland and nasal cavity, together with complete pathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies. Prognosis of this tumour is generally excellent. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice, with no need for further treatment; nevertheless, differential diagnosis must consider other more common tumours of the head and neck and be ba

Myeloid sarcoma involving salivary glands is extremely rare. Here, we report four cases of this rare occurrence, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. All of four patients had previous diagnoses of myeloid neoplasms. They presented with a solitary mass in the parotid or submandibular salivary gland. The cytological evaluation of the aspirates revealed scattered salivary gland acini admixed with dispersed atypical cells. In three cases, the atypical cells appeared to be heterogeneous, intermediate to large in size, and have folded nuclei with fine chromatin. In another case the atypical c

In this case report we describe a rare tumor--Oncocytic variant of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland with a review of the literature. Oncocytic metaplasia in salivary glands is a benign change that is associated with increasing age and also seen in a few salivary gland neoplasms', which include oncocytoma, Warthin's tumor, and the rare, oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytic differentiation in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is uncommon. Only twelve well-documented cases of oncocytic MEC have been reported previously all of which occurred in the parotid gland. To the best of

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common herpesvirus that has been linked to several human neoplasms. It has been found in over 90% of cases of Burkitt's lymphoma in endemic regions, although only 15% of cases in nonendemic regions show evidence of infection. The virus has been found in malignant lymphomas in immunocompromised states, including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, iatrogenic immunosuppression, such as in posttransplantation patients, and congenital immunodeficiencies. Recently, EBV genomes have been found in approximately 25% of cases of Hodgkin's disease, where it has been

Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the salivary glands are very rare neoplasms that present light microscopic, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical features of neuroendocrine differentiation. Twelve cases have been published in the English language literature. We describe the pathologic features of a case of primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the parotid gland in a 91-year old male and summarize the immunophenotype of previously reported LCNECs of the major salivary glands. It is concluded that primary LCNEC of the salivary glands presents as a high-grade undifferentiated car

Two types of salivary monomorphic adenomas, the so-called adenolymphoma and oncocytoma (75 cases in a series of 873 salivary gland tumors) were studied. These tumors were almost always located in major salivary glands (essentially in the parotid gland). They were much more common in men (85%) than in women. The oncocyte represented the characteristic cell in these two neoplasms. By electron microscopy, they were seen to contain numerous and abnormal mitochondriae and well-developed lysosomal systems. These findings were correlated with a high level of activity of oxidative enzymes and of acid

There is little information in the English-language literature regarding Warthin's tumour (WT) in the eastern-Chinese population. A large retrospective study (1084 primary tumours over a period of 18years) was carried out to investigate the clinicopathological features (patients' gender, age and tumour location) of these tumours in this population. A total of 994 (91.7%) patients were male and 90 (8.3%) were female, with a male/female ratio of 11:1. The mean age was 56.48years (range 20-89years), with a peak incidence in the fifth to seventh decade (82.1%). The favorite primary site of the tum

Sialoblastoma is a rare tumor of the salivary gland that commonly occurs in the parotid gland and occasionally in the sub-mandibular gland. The malignant potential of sialoblastoma has been documented in only 3 of 32 cases of sialoblastoma reported thus far. In the last 15 years, we have encountered 2 cases of sialoblastoma, in a newborn and in a 15-year-old boy, both arising within the parotid gland. Case 1 has been previously reported and although there were 2 recurrences, at 1 and 9 years post resection, it has shown benign biological behavior. Case 2 is unusual since the patient presented

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of salivary gland origin, accounting for approximately 27% of all salivary gland malignancies. While it frequently involves the parotid gland, intraoral cases show a predilection for the palate. Rarely, MEC can arise within the facial skeleton, where it is the most common salivary gland tumor to occur intraosseously. Intraosseous MECs of the jaws are extremely rare and often present diagnostic challenges due to their clinical resemblance to more common jaw lesions. We present a rare case of intraosseous MEC in a 52-year-old m

Carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland, a true malignant mixed tumour is extremely rare. It may occur in a pre-existing pleomorphic adenoma or arise de novo. We report a case of carcinosarcoma de novo harbouring an osteosarcomatous element in a 35-year-old man along with review of the reported cases. Excision was done and histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis. Long term follow up has been recommended for these tumours owing to their high propensity of recurrence and metastasis. Our case discusses the importance of histopathology and limitation of preoperative imaging in the diagnosi

Intraductal carcinoma (IDC) of the salivary gland is an uncommon epithelial neoplasm characterized by a predominantly intraductal or intracystic proliferation rimmed by a myoepithelial cell layer. Advances in molecular profiling have revealed recurrent gene fusions in IDC, most frequently involving RET, although fusions implicating other kinase genes have also been described. Among these, ALK rearrangements are rare and remain poorly characterized. Herein, we report a case of oncocytic IDC of the parotid gland harboring a STRN::ALK fusion, further expanding the molecular landscape of this tumo

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland. Liver metastasis from salivary gland cancer is a rare situation. In this article, we report the case of a 29-year-old woman treated 5 years previously for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland by surgery and radiotherapy, who presented for a large hypervascularized hepatic metastasis of 20 cm. After 3-cycle chemotherapy stability, hepatic surgery was successfully performed. The patient maintained disease-free period of 12 months after the surgical treatment. This rare case represents a therapeutic challen

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequently encountered benign mixed tumor of the minor salivary gland and usually presents in the parotid; however, in the minor salivary gland, it is more common in the palate. Tumors of the minor salivary glands are uncommon, with the most common intraoral site reported being the hard and soft palate owing to the preponderance of minor salivary glands in this region followed by the lips. Pleomorphic adenoma arising from minor salivary glands of the lips tends to occur at an earlier age than it does at other sites. Pleomorphic adenoma of the lip is a rare neopl

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign neoplasm of salivary gland origin involving both major and minor glands. Though parotid is the most common site of origin, it has been reported to arise from various unusual locations. Incidence of its origin in the respiratory tract is extremely rare, and the occurrence is even lower in the maxillary sinus. We report a case of a huge antral pleomorphic adenoma in a 33-year-old male patient presented as a swelling in the maxilla which was mistaken of odontogenic origin. Histological findings showed extensive ossification and hyalinization of the st
