Uncommon Metastasizing Site of Adrenocortical Carcinoma.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a very rare tumor having a poor prognosis. Approximately 25% of these cases may present with metastases at the time of diagnosis. Common sites of metastasis are lung, liver, and lymph nodes. The bone metastases in ACC are less frequent. We report a case of a 35-year-old male presented with right parotid region swelling, rendered with a diagnosis of ACC metastasizing to the mandible ramus, which is an uncommon site.

Myoepithelioma of the vallecula: a case report.

Myoepitheliomas are rare and generally benign neoplasms that account for fewer than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. A myoepithelioma neoplasm is almost entirely composed of myoepithelial cells and is most frequently located in the parotid gland and in the minor salivary glands of the hard palate. We report an extremely rare case of myoepithelioma of the vallecular region in a 65-year-old woman and describe this tumor's clinical peculiarity, diagnostic and therapeutic considerations, and prognosis.

Assessment of Risk of Xerostomia After Whole-Brain Radiation Therapy and Association With Parotid Dose.

IMPORTANCE: Whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) delivers a substantial radiation dose to the parotid glands, but the parotid glands are not delineated for avoidance and xerostomia has never been reported as an adverse effect. Minimizing the toxic effects in patients receiving palliative treatments, such as WBRT, is crucial. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether xerostomia is a toxic effect of WBRT. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This observational cohort study enrolled patients from November 2, 2015, to March 20, 2018, at 1 academic center (University of North Carolina Hospitals) and 2 affiliate

Alveolar Echinococcosis of the Parotid Gland-An Ultra Rare Location Reported from Western Europe.

(1) Background: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is restricted to the northern hemisphere with high endemic regions in Central Europe, North and Central Asia as well as Western China. The larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis) causes AE with tumor-like growth. Humans are accidental hosts. This report is on the first case of AE becoming clinically manifested in the parotic gland. (2) Case presentation: A 52-year-old male patient presented with progressive and painful swelling of the right parotid gland persisting for one year. We performed a partial parotidectomy. The histo

Metastatic retinoblastoma of the parotid and submandibular glands: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy occurring in children. It can metastasize to the regional lymph nodes, central nervous system and distant organs usually the bones and bone marrow and very rarely to the soft tissue. Here, we report a case of unilateral retinoblastoma in a 4-year-old girl accompanied by a large metastasis of the parotid and submandibular glands that developed about 6 months previously and gradually increased in size 5 months after enucleation of the left eye. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old girl with a history of unilateral retinoblastoma pr

Symposium: management of tumors of the parotid gland.

The successful management of swellings in the parotid gland region is dependent upon the establishment of a clinical and/or histologic diagnosis of the condition responsible for the production of the abnormal swelling. All mobile parotid tumors are removed as an excisional biopsy with preservation of the facial nerve. A preoperative biopsy will not influence the subsequent management of these lesions. An aspiration biopsy is employed to evaluate all primary, previously undiagnosed, non-ulcerative parotid tumors suspected of being clinically malignant. An experienced pathologist views with conf

Changing clinical manifestations of a T-peripheral lymphoma: from hypereosinophilic syndrome to questionable Kimura's disease resulting in parotid mass.

The diagnosis of low-grade lymphoproliferative disorders during a long clinical course sometimes represents a great clinical challenge. The idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) represents a pre-malignant state in some patients and close follow-up is necessary to detect early signs of malignant transformation. Kimura's disease (KD) mimicking HES is an immune mediated inflammatory disorder that usually involves the head and neck region, primarily affecting the salivary glands, adjacent muscle and regional lymph nodes. Clinically, it is very difficult to differentiate KD from salivary glan

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: A case report with multimodal imaging and histopathological correlation.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland tumor, predominantly arising in the parotid gland. Although usually indolent, it may rarely exhibit metastatic behavior without histological malignancy, a condition known as metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA). We report the case of a 43-year-old male with a history of right parotid pleomorphic adenoma (PA), initially treated by enucleation in 2010, followed by recurrence requiring total parotidectomy in 2019. The patient presented with a painless mass in the right parotid region associated with ipsilateral cervical swelling…

Partial facial paralysis induced by sialolithiasis of the parotid gland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Facial paralysis due to parotid sialolithiasis-induced parotitis is a unusual clinical phenomenon that has not been reported in prior literature. This scenario can present a diagnostic challenge due to its rarity and complex symptomatology, particularly if a patient has other potential contributing factors such as facial trauma or bilateral forehead botox injections as in this patient. This case report elucidates such a complex presentation, aiming to increase awareness and promote timely recognition among clinicians. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old male, with a medical history s

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma of the parotid gland: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) was first described in 2010 by Skálová et al. This entity shares morphologic and immunohistochemical features with the secretory carcinoma (SC) of the breast. MASC usually presents as an asymptomatic mass in the parotid gland and predominantly affects men. This tumor is considered a low-grade carcinoma but has the potential for high-grade transformation. We report one MASC case and a review of world literature. CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old male patient presented because he noticed a mass of approximately 3×3cm on the right pre-auricular regi

Primary Synovial Sarcoma of the Parotid Gland: A Diagnostic Challenge With Cyto-Histological Correlation and Review of Literature.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor of uncertain histogenesis that most commonly affects young adults' distal extremities, with the parotid being a very uncommon site. With fewer than 50 cases being reported in the literature and morphological similarities to many benign and malignant parotid lesions, it is challenging to diagnose this lesion. We report a 30-year-old female who presented with a rapidly enlarging, painful mass in the left parotid region with facial nerve palsy. The initial FNAC performed outside was interpreted as a pleomorphic adenoma. Repeat FNAC at our institut…

Reduced MIBG accumulation of the parotid and submandibular glands in idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alpha-synuclein pathology (ASP) is a characteristic histopathological finding in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). The ASP involves not only the brain but also extracranial structures. In the present study we utilized MIBG scintigraphy to measure the sympathetic innervation of the major salivary glands. We were interested in whether MIBG uptake in the major salivary glands represents a potential biomarker for ASP in PD. METHODS: We investigated 77 PD patients (age 61 ± 10 years, mean ± SD), while 15 non-PD patients (age 58 ± 15 years) with arterial hypertension, who underwent
