We encountered two cases of Pasteurella multocida subsp. septica isolation from exudates with seminal fluid-like odor from dog scratch and cat bite. Case 1: A 78-year-old male who had been diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus five years ago was scratched by the claw of a pet dog (Pekinese) on the back of the right hand. Since inflammation ascended to the arm, the patient visited Nihon University Itabashi hospital for a medical examination. Case 2: A 51-year-old female without a specific past history other than hyperlipidemia was bitten by a pet cat at the medical and lateral sides of the left…

An outbreak of pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella multocida is reported in which six elands (Taurotragus oryx), a gnu (Connochaetes taurinus albojubatus), a zebra (Equus bruchelli), five kangaroos (Macropus rufus), an ostrich (Struthio camelus camelus) and a bateleur eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus) died in Kano Zoological Gardens toward the end of the rainy season of 1978. Confirmation was based on cultural isolation of P. multocida. Analysis of likely factors that could have contributed to the outbreak indicated that it may have been precipitated initially by climatic stress associated with c…

A patient with right-sided chronic purulent otorrhoea developed meningitis due to Pasteurella multocida transmitted by a dog that frequently licked his ear. We suggest that patients with a perforated tympanic membrane should avoid being licked on their ears by animals.

Infectious diseases may be particularly critical for the conservation of endangered species. A striking example is the recurrent outbreaks that have been occurring in seabirds on Amsterdam Island for the past 30 years, threatening populations of three Endangered seabird species and of the endemic, Critically Endangered Amsterdam albatross Diomedea amsterdamensis. The bacteria Pasteurella multocida (avian cholera causative agent), and to a lesser extent Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (erysipelas causative agent), were both suspected to be responsible for these epidemics. Despite this critical sit…

Fowl cholera resulting from infection with Pasteurella multocida causes huge economic losses in the poultry industry. Necrotic hepatitis is reported to be a significant lesion associated with fowl cholera in chickens. Clarifying the underlying molecular mechanism of hepatic injury caused by P. multocida infection is needed to develop new strategies to control fowl cholera. Pasteurella multocida Q (the standard reference strain) and P. multocida 1G1 (a clinical strain) were used to infect healthy laying hens. Clinical signs were observed and gross lesions in livers were observed postmortem. His…

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to characterize the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni isolated from healthy feedlot cattle over 2 years, and investigate factors potentially associated with recovery of resistant isolates.
METHODS: Deep-guarded nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs were used to sample feedlot cattle in multiple randomly selected feedlots (2019 n = 21, 2020 n = 26) at 2 timepoints. NP swabs were collected from 16 animals in each enrolled group upon entry processing and later in the feeding period. Cattle …

Pasteurella multocida subspecies multocida is the most common cause of fowl cholera, although P. multocida subspecies septica and gallicida may also cause fowl cholera-like disease to some extent. However, the virulence properties of the different subspecies for various hosts have not been elucidated. The severity and incidence of P. multocida infections may vary considerably depending on several factors associated with the host (including species and age of infected birds), the environment and the bacterial strain. No single virulence factor has been associated with the observed variation in …

Over the period 1981-92, 32 bacterial isolates were referred to the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit from infected dog-bite wounds and 10 isolates were submitted from blood cultures after dog bites or close contact with dogs. The isolates from the bite wounds were identified, or confirmed, as Pasteurella multocida (11 isolates), Pasteurella dagmatis (3), CDC group M-5 (9), CDC group EF-4a (8) and Streptococcus anginosus (1). Five of the 9 patients from whom CDC group M-5 was cultured had mixed infections: 2 with P. multocida one of which also had Bacteroides sp., one with P. dagmatis, one with …

In this study, the serum sensitivity of 23 P. haemolytica isolates and 18 P. multocida isolates was determined by incubating dilutions of bacteria with equal volumes of fresh or heat-inactivated bovine serum for one, two, or three hours. Clinical isolates of both Pasteurella species were resistant to serum, whereas isolates from asymptomatic cattle varied in serum susceptibility. The classical pathway of complement appeared to be the principal means of complement mediated killing as detected by incubation in the presence or absence of EGTA-MgCl2. Lyzozyme and iron saturation of serum did not g

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative coccobacillus commonly associated with soft tissue and skin infections. On rare occasions, it may result in systemic bacteremia and sepsis. Our case describes a 59-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with septic shock. Physical examination was remarkable for bilateral lower extremity wounds which were in recent contact with feline oral secretions. Blood cultures were obtained and resulted in the growth of P. multocida after 48 hours. His treatment involved intravenous antibiotics and supportive care. After finishing his two-week cour…

Hemorrhagic septicaemia, an acute disease caused by P multocida capsular type B which is rarely detected in Europe, caused considerable losses in fallow deer, cattle and pigs within a region along the border of the federal states Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt in the summer of 2010. Clinical appearances and diagnostic findings are presented and possible triggering influences discussed. Pasteurella multocida capsular type B has not been cultivated from clinically healthy cattle and pigs of the region. Examination of fallow deer and roe deer in the region revealed the presence of singular carrier…

We report acute fatal pasteurellosis in wild big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) in Wisconsin, USA. Mortality of approximately 100 bats was documented over 4 wk, with no evidence for predatory injuries. Pasteurella multocida serotype 1 was isolated from multiple internal organs from four of five bats examined postmortem.

The serum antibody responses to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and the secondary invader Pasteurella multocida were monitored from birth until slaughter in the offspring to sows with high or low levels of serum antibodies to A. pleuropneumoniae. Serum antibody concentrations to A. pleuropneumoniae were higher from birth to the age of 9 weeks in piglets delivered by high responding sows. In contrast, antibody levels to P. multocida were similar in both groups during this period. From the age of 20 and 15 weeks, antibody levels to A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida, respectively, were higher …

The spontaneous occurrence of atrophic rhinitis in 12 of 49 goat herds in one area of Norway is described. The clinical signs included nose bleeding, nasal discharge, sneezing and tender noses. Pathologically, the macroscopic and histological findings resembled those found in pigs with atrophic rhinitis. Bacteriological investigation of nasal swabs in five of the herds revealed toxigenic strains of Pasteurella multocida in three of them. In four of the herds the clinical signs were seen in two or more consecutive years. No specific source of the infection was discovered. Atrophic rhinitis was …

The purpose of this article is to review the clinical features of pasteurellosis in a tertiary centre over a period of 4½ years. We have identified eight cases of Pasteurella multocida and one case of Pasteurella canis infection, with a large diversity of clinical pictures and outcomes. All patients were elderly and/or immunocompromised and 55.6% reported animal exposure. Soft tissue infections were the most prevalent (55.6%), followed by pneumonia (22.2%) and sepsis (22.2 %). All isolates were susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics using in vitro sensitivity testing. The overall mortality was…

The literature relating to respiratory disease in rabbits is reviewed. Pasteurella multocida was identified in the 1920s as the most important and common cause of respiratory disease in rabbits, and today pasteurellosis remains a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in farmed rabbits. Methods of treatment and prevention are reviewed, including recent experimental work in vaccine development.

An investigation into the extent and significance of Pasteurella multocida infections of birds and poultry in Britain during a three year period (1974--1977) was undertaken. This was achieved by means of postal questionnaires, coupled with the biochemical and serological examination of bacterial isolates from 91 outbreaks in poultry and from nine cases in other avian species.

The causative role of some infectious agents found in cases of feline pneumonia is under debate, because they are also part of the physiological microbiota of the respiratory tract of healthy animals. In this retrospective study, archived formalin-fixed and paraffin-wax-embedded lung samples of 69 severe and lethal cases of pneumonia in cats were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the detection of nine selected infectious agents: Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Mycoplasma felis, M. gateae, Chlamydia felis, feline herpesvirus type 1, feline coronavirus, canine distempe…

Biochemical profiles, restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) and ribotyping were used to investigate a total of 38 Pasteurella multocida isolates from four separate outbreaks of pasteurellosis in Australian piggeries. Six isolates were obtained from Outbreak 1, 16 from Outbreak 2 and eight each from outbreaks 3 and 4. Outbreaks 1 and 2 were cases of pneumonic pasteurellosis while outbreaks 3 and 4 involved systemic pasteurellosis. Biochemical characterisation established that a number of different types of P. multocida were present in outbreaks 1 and 3 while outbreaks 2 and 4 were associated …
