Eighty-two patients with pituitary adenoma who underwent transsphenoidal surgery were examined before and after surgery. Nineteen patients had a normal preoperative neuro-ophthalmological examination. All of these patients maintained normal visual parameters postoperatively. The remaining 63 patients had tumour-related loss of visual acuity, visual field, or both. These patients ranged in age from 18 to 78 years. INTRODUCTION: Congenital ptosis is malpositioning of the eyelids that, when moderate or severe, can negatively affect visual development during its critical period, resulting in amblyopia: diminished visual acuity with no apparent organic cause. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential for preventing amblyopia. Congenital ptosis is uncommon but poses a challenge to any ophthalmologist; the only treatment is surgical. Among these patients in Cuba, those with the most complex clinical characteristics are generally referred to the Ramón Pando Ferrer Ophthalmology Institute in Havana.

A 47-year-old man was treated with one session of endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation for uncontrolled, elevated intraocular pressure. Before treatment, the eye was quiet and uninflamed. Pretreatment visual acuity was 4/200 and the intraocular pressure was 24 mm Hg. Treatment was applied to the ciliary processes for nearly 360 degrees. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to determine the long-term visual outcomes in patients undergoing successful macular hole surgery.
DESIGN: A consecutive series of eyes with an anatomically successful macular hole surgical result and at least 1 year postoperative follow-up information was identified and studied. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuities were measured in accordance with the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study protocol.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual acuity, improvement of visual acuity, and rate of final visual greater than or equal to 20/40 were measured.

We retrospectively review our experience with four patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae scleritis. Two of the patients had been exposed to beta irradiation after pterygium removal 4 and 13 years previously. One patient had a 3-year history of chronic anterior nodular scleritis, and one patient had severe rheumatoid arthritis. All were treated with intensive i.v. and topical fortified antibiotics.
