Key concepts in consumer and community engagement: a scoping meta-review.

BACKGROUND: Although consumer and community engagement (CCE) in health care is receiving increasing attention, research and practice in this area are hampered by the variability of concepts and terminology commonly employed. This scoping meta-review aims to identify key CCE concepts and examine terminology used to describe them. METHODS: In a scoping meta-review, an extensive list of 47 phrases and 11 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) was used to undertake a comprehensive and systematic search in PubMed Central, Embase, EBM reviews, CINAHL, APAPsycNET, and Scopus. RESULTS: 59 systematic review

Impaired word-stem completion priming but intact perceptual identification priming with novel words: evidence from the amnesic patient H.M.

We hypothesized that word-stem completion (WSC) priming and perceptual identification (PI) priming, two types of repetition priming, rely on different cognitive and neural mechanisms: WSC priming on a modification mechanism that influences lexical retrieval, and PI priming on plasticity in pre-lexical perceptual systems. We compared the priming performance of the amnesic patient H.M. with words that came into common usage after the onset of his amnesia, and thus were novel to him (post-1965 words), and with familiar (pre-1953) words. We also tested age- and education-matched normal control sub

An automatic system to identify heart disease risk factors in clinical texts over time.

Despite recent progress in prediction and prevention, heart disease remains a leading cause of death. One preliminary step in heart disease prediction and prevention is risk factor identification. Many studies have been proposed to identify risk factors associated with heart disease; however, none have attempted to identify all risk factors. In 2014, the National Center of Informatics for Integrating Biology and Beside (i2b2) issued a clinical natural language processing (NLP) challenge that involved a track (track 2) for identifying heart disease risk factors in clinical texts over time. This

Prognostic factors for patients with breast cancers 1cm and smaller.

The widespread use of mammography has resulted in the detection of an increasing number of small invasive breast cancers, i.e. those that are 1cm and smaller. Patients with these small cancers generally have a low incidence of axillary lymph node metastases, and this has led some to question the routine use of axillary dissection in these patients. In addition, the prognosis of these patients is generally favorable, and the routine use of adjuvant systemic therapy is difficult to justify. Nonetheless, some patients with these small invasive cancers will have axillary nodal involvement and/or d

Transforming one health antimicrobial resistance surveillance in resource-limited countries (RLCs): From point-of-care diagnostics to AI-driven decision support.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging global problem, particularly for, resource-limited countries (RLCs) with limited capacity to diagnose diseases, inadequate surveillance systems, insufficient antimicrobial stewardship, and poor, health facilities. Conventional AMR surveillance relies primarily on post hoc laboratory, reporting and is not able to provide real-time data to aid in making effective clinical and, public health decisions. AMR surveillance is being revolutionized with the introduction, of point-of-care (PoC) diagnostics, digital health technologies, and artificial intelli

Various structural factors influenced early antiretroviral therapy initiation amongst HIV infected prisoners: a qualitative exploration in South Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), non-AIDS related comorbidities and mortality, and prevents transmission. However, the prevalence of delayed ART initiation amongst prisoners in sub-Saharan African countries is high and the contributing factors to this are relatively unknown. METHODS: Qualitative interviewing was employed to understand the prisoners' lived world with regard to initiating ART and associated barriers and facilitators in the South Ethiopian prison system. We interviewed seven (five m

Cement leakage into the paravertebral venous system and pulmonary cement embolism following percutaneous vertebroplasty: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary cement embolism is a potentially serious complication following percutaneous vertebroplasty. The risk factors for pulmonary cement embolism have not been clearly identifed. Cement leakage into the azygos vein or in the inferior vena cava has been identifed as a risk factor for pulmonary cement embolism. In addition cement leakage into the paravertebral venous system also seems to be related to pulmonary cement embolism. Here we report a case with detailed preoperative data, intraoperative findings, and imaging evidence to demonstrate the relationship between cement leakag

[Research progress of nervous system damage in Pompe disease].

Pompe disease, also known as glycogen storage disease type Ⅱ, is a rare autosomal recessive disease. With the application of enzyme replacement therapy, more and more patients with Pompe disease can survive to adulthood, and nervous system-related clinical manifestations gradually emerge. Nervous system involvement seriously affects the quality of life of patients with Pompe disease, and a systematic understanding of the clinical manifestations, imaging features and pathological changes of nervous system injury in Pompe disease is of great significance for the early identification and interven

The human exosome and disease.

Long before the RNA degrading exosome was first described in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the use of autoantibodies found in the sera of certain autoimmune patients allowed the identification of a complex of polypeptides which later appeared to be the human exosome. Today, the most extensively documented association of the exosome with disease is still its targeting by the immune system of such patients. The highest frequency of autoantibodies to components of the exosome complex is found in polymyositis-scleroderma overlap patients and therefore the exosome is termed PM/Scl autoantigen

Mucosal brushings for nasal specific IgE to predict house dust mite driven allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Skin prick testing and serological identification of allergen specific immunoglobulin E (spIgE) are standard tests for allergic rhinitis but can only identify systemic responses. In contrast, nasal allergen challenge (NAC), directly assess localized nasal mucosal reactivity, but is time consuming. Identification of spIgE from nasal brushings (nasal spIgE) is an alternative technique. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the diagnostic performance of nasal spIgE compared to NAC in order predict house dust mite (HDM) driven AR. METHODS: A diagnostic cross-sectional study involv

[ANMCO Position paper: Amyloidosis for the clinical cardiologist. A "clinical primer" from the ANMCO Rare Disease Working Group].

Cardiac amyloidosis, in the three forms of immunoglobulin light chain (AL), transthyretin (ATTR) wild type (ATTRwt) and mutated (ATTRv) amyloidosis, is an increasingly known and recognized disease in the cardiovascular setting. The first stage of the patient's journey is the clinical suspicion of the disease, which is placed, in presence of a hypertrophic phenotype, by the identification of red flags, both extracardiac and cardiac clues whose presence increase the probability of being faced with a patient with this disease. The second stage is represented by diagnosis, which occurs with certai

From Binary to Multi-Class Classification: A Two-Step Hybrid CNN-ViT Model for Chest Disease Classification Based on X-Ray Images.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chest disease identification for Tuberculosis and Pneumonia diseases presents diagnostic challenges due to overlapping radiographic features and the limited availability of expert radiologists, especially in developing countries. The present study aims to address these challenges by developing a Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system to provide consistent and objective analyses of chest X-ray images, thereby reducing potential human error. By leveraging the complementary strengths of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs), we propose a hybrid
