Abnormal brain activation during directed forgetting of negative memory in depressed patients.

The frequent occurrence of uncontrollable negative thoughts and memories is a troubling aspect of depression. Thus, knowledge on the mechanism underlying intentional forgetting of these thoughts and memories is crucial to develop an effective emotion regulation strategy for depressed individuals. Behavioral studies have demonstrated that depressed participants cannot intentionally forget negative memories. However, the neural mechanism underlying this process remains unclear. In this study, participants completed the directed forgetting task in which they were instructed to remember or forget

Sparseness of the trabecular pattern on dental radiographs: visual assessment compared with semi-automated measurements.

OBJECTIVE: In diagnostic imaging; human perception is the most prominent, yet least studied, source of error. A better understanding of image perception will help to improve diagnostic performance. This study focuses on the perception of coarseness of trabecular patterns on dental radiographs. Comparison of human vision with machine vision should yield knowledge on human perception. METHOD: In a study on identifying osteoporotic patients, dental radiographs were made from 505 post-menopausal women aged 45-70 years. Intra-oral radiographs of the lower and upper jaws were made. Five observers g

Height prediction of individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta by machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by low bone mass, bone fragility and short stature. There is a significant gap in knowledge regarding the growth patterns across different types of OI, and the prediction of height in individuals with OI was not adequately addressed. In this study, we described the growth patterns and predicted the height of individuals with OI employing multiple machine learning (ML) models. Accurate height prediction enables effective monitoring and facilitates the development of personalized intervention plans for managing OI. MET

Integrated transcriptomic and single cell analysis combined with artificial neural network identifies a robust gene signature for early discrimination of MASL and MASH.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease, ranging from simple steatosis (MASL) to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). However, reliable noninvasive strategies for accurately distinguishing MASL from MASH at an early stage remain limited. We therefore aimed to develop a robust molecular model to improve early identification of disease progression and subtype discrimination. METHODS: Five datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus were integrated as a training cohort comprising 149 MASL and 158 M

Machine learning-based DNA microarray analysis for disease detection using the MICRO-AI framework.

DNA microarray is a transformative technique in genomics, enabling simultaneous examination of thousands of gene expression levels. However, noise, high dimensionality (typically 12,000-22,000 genes), small sample sizes (155-1097 samples) and class imbalance complicate the extraction of meaningful diagnostic patterns. This paper presents MICRO-AI (Microarray Classification and Recognition using Artificial Intelligence), a comprehensive machine learning framework for DNA microarray analysis and automated disease diagnosis. The framework integrates advanced preprocessing (quantile normalisation,

Machine Learning Classification of Smoking Behaviours-From Social Environment to the Prefrontal Cortex.

The pronounced heterogeneity in smoking trajectories-ranging from occasional or heavy use to successful quitting -highlights substantial interindividual variation within the smoking population. Machine learning is particularly well suited to capture these complex patterns that may be challenging for traditional inferential statistics to uncover. In this study, we applied machine learning to data from a population-based cohort to identify multimodal markers that distinguish smokers from never smokers at baseline and predict long-term cessation success at a 10-year follow-up. We employed 10 time

Exploring the Pathogens in Primary Predominantly Antibody Deficiencies of Unknown Genetic Origin.

INTRODUCTION: Primary 'predominantly antibody deficiencies' (PADs) are rare disorders characterized by increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmunity, allergies, and malignancies. Their low prevalence and heterogeneity often delay diagnosis, increasing morbidity and mortality. This study identifies infection patterns in PAD patients and analyzes predictors of bronchiectasis presence at PAD diagnosis (BPAD), aiming to facilitate early diagnosis and improve prognosis. METHODS: Using fully monitored data on PAD patients without identified genetic origin from the ESID Registry, infection ty

The identification of gene signatures in patients with extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma from a pair of twins.

BACKGROUND: There is no unified treatment standard for patients with extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL). Cancer neoantigens are the result of somatic mutations and cancer-specific. Increased number of somatic mutations are associated with anti-cancer effects. Screening out ENKTL-specific neoantigens on the surface of cancer cells relies on the understanding of ENKTL mutation patterns. Hence, it is imperative to identify ENKTL-specific genes for ENKTL diagnosis, the discovery of tumor-specific neoantigens and the development of novel therapeutic strategies. We investigated the gene signature

Genetic risks of Alzheimer's by APOE and MAPT on cortical morphology in young healthy adults.

Genetic risk factors such as APOE ε4 and MAPT (rs242557) A allele are associated with amyloid and tau pathways and grey matter changes at both early and established stages of Alzheimer's disease, but their effects on cortical morphology in young healthy adults remain unclear. A total of 144 participants aged from 18 to 24 underwent 3T MRI and genotyping for APOE and MAPT to investigate unique impacts of these genetic risk factors in a cohort without significant comorbid conditions such as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. We segmented the cerebral cortex into 68 regions and calculated the

Novel automated vessel pattern characterization of larynx contact endoscopic video images.

PURPOSE: Contact endoscopy (CE) is a minimally invasive procedure providing real-time information about the cellular and vascular structure of the superficial layer of laryngeal mucosa. This method can be combined with optical enhancement methods such as narrow band imaging (NBI). However, these techniques have some problems like subjective interpretation of vascular patterns and difficulty in differentiation between benign and malignant lesions. We propose a novel automated approach for vessel pattern characterization of larynx CE + NBI images in order to solve these problems. METHODS: In th
