Understanding covert recognition.

An implementation of Bruce and Young's (1986) functional model of face recognition is used to examine patterns of covert face recognition previously reported in a prosopagnosic patient, PH. Although PH is unable to recognize overly the faces of people known to him, he shows normal patterns of face processing when tested indirectly. A simple manipulation of one set of connections in the implemented model induces behaviour consistent with patterns of results from PH obtained in semantic priming and interference tasks. We compare this account with previous explanations of covert recognition and d

Effects of patterned backgrounds on responses of lateral geniculate neurons in cat.

In the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of paralyzed cats under urethane anaesthesia, an extensive disinhibitory region (DIR) outside the inhibitory surround of the receptive field (RF) was found in both sustained and transient cells. Its extent is comparable to that of McIlwain's periphery effect (1964). The responses to a light spot, flashed into different parts of the RF center, were used to assess the effect of different background patterns, located over the DIR, on responsiveness and receptive field organization. A straight line background cutting across the RF center led to a marked shri

Metamemorial knowledge of good and poor readers: a developmental perspective.

Torgesen (1977b) suggested that reading-disabled children exhibit passivity in learning situations; they fail to employ strategies that enhance learning. Such passivity resembles that of young children who lack awareness of the utility of strategies that enhance cognitive efficiency in a variety of situations (e.g., listening, reading, and memory tasks). Such awareness is one aspect of metamemory, and children with reading problems may lag behind other children with regard to this aspect. Good readers (second-, third-, and fifth-graders) and poor readers (third- and fifth-graders) were intervi

The mind's average: Unseen, internally generated ensemble representations can guide visual attention.

Ensemble processing, which allows the visual system to form summary statistical representations (e.g., the average size of a bowl of apples), can be influenced by attention. However, can such internally, statistically generated representations influence the deployment of attention? To answer this question, we conducted two experiments using a modified version of an attentional cueing paradigm with an ensemble task. Each trial began by displaying an array of eight ovals of varying sizes. Next, two ovals to the left and right of fixation were presented, where one oval was the average size of the

The tiger moving through the tall grass: Spontaneous perception and tracking of change-defined objects from second-order features.

The most important objects - from predators to projectiles - are often those that are moving. Accordingly, visual systems are specialized for object tracking, and many models of such processing involve continually re-identifying surface features across space and time (as you might follow a tiger by keeping track of its orange stripes). Here, in contrast, we show across four experiments - and in phenomenologically compelling demonstrations - that people also spontaneously perceive and track change-defined objects, with no enduring surface properties from moment to moment. Observers viewed regul

Dissociating the hierarchical processing of perceptual and food category information under different task demands.

To clarify whether food category selectivity in the ventral visual pathway arises from genuine category-specific processing or low-level perceptual differences-a core premise of the diagnostic feature encoding hypothesis-and how it is modulated by task demands, this study assigned participants to perform either a perceptual (color-matching) or categorical (food/nonfood) one-back task. Using multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and cross-task representational similarity analysis (RSA) of EEG data, we found that perceptual features dominated early processing (100-200 ms), whereas food category i

From holistic to decompositional: Tracking the neural representational shift of Chinese character satiation with representational similarity analysis.

Chinese character satiation is a phenomenon whereby prolonged or repeated inspection induces a compelling subjective experience of structural disintegration. Yet, objective neurophysiological evidence for the proposed mechanism of orthographic decomposition has remained elusive. The present study employed representational similarity analysis (RSA) on electroencephalography (EEG) data to bridge this gap. We first established distinct neural templates for holistic (whole-character judgment) and decompositional (component-judgment) processing. Subsequently, during a satiation phase involving repe

The Pattern Glare Test: Further Exploration of Methodological and Demographic Factors.

PURPOSE: The Pattern Glare Test (PGT) is a widely used tool for assessing visual discomfort and perceptual distortions elicited by repetitive, high-contrast patterns. It has been applied across diverse populations and research fields, including neuroscience, cognitive psychology, optometry, orthoptics, and ophthalmology. Despite its broad use, considerable variation exists in how the PGT is implemented, particularly regarding stimulus parameters, participant characteristics, and scoring methods. Such variability introduces potential confounding factors that may obscure the psychological and ne

OCRNet a robust deep learning framework for alphanumeric character recognition to assist the visually impaired.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a part of transformative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology which translates printed or handwritten texts into digital, machine-readable form. These OCR systems act as an assistive tool for visually impaired people helping them with real-time text recognition and to interact with their surroundings. This paper presents "OCRNet", a robust deep learning approach to detect and recognize alphanumeric characters in dynamic environments. Firstly, an optimized neural network with 43 layers is designed to capture the spatial features of the 62 alphanumeric c

Two routes to a target: Visual priming for direct and indirect attentional sets.

To find an item of interest among candidate objects we are directed by attentional sets that reflect our expectations and intentions and may also vary by whether items should be attended or ignored. We investigated how different attentional sets influence target search and the effect of prior experience on these attentional sets. Our participants had to identify a target object given a set of objects that either contained the target itself (direct attentional set) or contained only cues that defined the target by exclusion (indirect attentional set). We found that response times were significa

A Picture Corrects a Thousand Words - The Effect of Photos on Veracity Feedback.

The truthiness effect (Newman et al., 2012) refers to the belief that any particular stimulus is truthful when it is accompanied by nonprobative information (e.g., a photograph). Accordingly, photo-accompanied statements are more likely to be judged as truthful compared to statements without a photo. In an online experiment (N = 98) with two assessment times, we aimed to replicate this effect and its persistence over time. Furthermore, we were interested in to what extent feedback on the actual veracity of statements would be affected by the presence of a photo. Participants rated the veracity

Orthographic-phonological mapping impairments in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia: insights from an ERP investigation.

In the realm of logographic writing systems, such as Chinese characters, orthographic transparency fundamentally differs from alphabetic languages, posing unique challenges for individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD). This study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) and a masked priming paradigm to investigate how Chinese children with DD compared to typically developing (TD) children in their utilization of orthographic-phonological mapping rules during the processing of pseudocharacters. The findings revealed noteworthy distinctions between TD and DD children. TD children exhibited a

Overlapping representations of observed actions and action-related features.

The lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC) has been shown to capture the representational structure of a smaller range of actions. In the current study, we carried out an fMRI experiment in which we presented human participants with images depicting 100 different actions and used representational similarity analysis (RSA) to determine which brain regions capture the semantic action space established using judgments of action similarity. Moreover, to determine the contribution of a wide range of action-related features to the neural representation of the semantic action space we constructed an

The contribution of dynamics to macaque body and face patch responses.

Previous functional imaging studies demonstrated body-selective patches in the primate visual temporal cortex, comparing activations to static bodies and static images of other categories. However, the use of static instead of dynamic displays of moving bodies may have underestimated the extent of the body patch network. Indeed, body dynamics provide information about action and emotion and may be processed in patches not activated by static images. Thus, to map with fMRI the full extent of the macaque body patch system in the visual temporal cortex, we employed dynamic displays of natural-act

Effective connectivity of the left-ventral occipito-temporal cortex during visual word processing: Direct causal evidence from TMS-EEG co-registration.

As an interface between the visual and language system, the left ventral occipito-temporal cortex (left-vOT) plays a key role in reading. This functional role is supported by anatomical and functional connections between the area and other brain regions within and outside the language network. Nevertheless, only a few studies have investigated how the functional state of this area, which is dependent upon the nature of the task demand and the stimulus being processed, could influence the activity of the connected brain regions. In the present combined TMS-EEG study, we studied the left-vOT eff

Dorsal type letter-by-letter reading accompanying alexia with agraphia due to a lesion of the lateral occipital gyri.

We report a patient with alexia with agraphia accompanied by letter-by-letter reading after hemorrhage in the left middle and inferior occipital gyri that spared the angular gyrus and the fusiform gyrus. Kanji (Japanese morphograms) and kana (Japanese phonetic writing) reading and writing tests revealed that alexia with agraphia was characterized by kana-predominant alexia and kanji-predominant agraphia. This type of "dorsal" letter-by-letter reading is discernable from conventional ventral type letter-by-letter reading that is observed in pure alexia in that (1) kinesthetic reading is less ef

Representations of grapho-motor patterns unique to Chinese character writing: evidence from a patient with mirror writing.

This study investigated the grapho-motor patterns used in writing Chinese characters. A Chinese patient, CSC, who demonstrated post-brain-injury mirror writing, was recruited. In Experiment 1, non-mirrored writing responses were obtained when CSC was instructed to copy asymmetrical non-verbal symbols and pictures. Resembling the patterns observed in a patient's writing reported in a previous study, it was hypothesized that CSC's mirror writing was a result of untransformed preserved grapho-motor patterns. In Experiments 2 and 3, CSC was further instructed to copy real Chinese characters, pseud

Substantiating synesthesia: a novel aid in a case of grapheme-colour synesthesia and concomitant dyscalculia.

Here we present the case of SP, a 21-year-old female with life-long dyscalculia. SP was subsequently diagnosed with grapheme-color synesthesia, a diagnosis that serendipitously catalyzed our development of a novel aid:The digit-color calculator (DCC). The DCC substantiates SP's color concurrents, dramatically ameliorating her difficulties with basic calculations. We envisage the DCC and its analogues may assist others in educational settings, particularly if they experience difficulties with the acquisition of literacy and numeracy. Further devices that leverage synesthesia may also have the p
