The Influence of Hearing Aid Use on Outcomes of Children With Mild Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of consistent hearing aid (HA) use on outcomes in children with mild hearing loss (HL). METHOD: Five- or 7-year-old children with mild HL were separated into 3 groups on the basis of patterns of daily HA use. Using analyses of variance, we compared outcomes between groups on speech and language tests and a speech perception in noise task. Regression models were used to investigate the influence of cumulative auditory experience (audibility, early intervention, HA use) on outcomes. RESULTS: Full-time HA users demonstrated significantly higher scores on

Response properties underlying selectivity for the rate of frequency modulated sweeps in the auditory cortex of the mouse.

This study focused on the response properties underlying selectivity for the rate of frequency modulated (FM) sweeps in the auditory cortex of anesthetized C57bl/6 (C57) mice. Linear downward FM sweeps with rates between 0.08 and 20 kHz/ms were tested. We show that at least two different response properties predict FM rate selectivity: sideband inhibition and duration tuning. Sideband inhibition was determined using the two-tone inhibition paradigm in which excitatory and inhibitory tones were presented with different delays. Sideband inhibition was present in the majority (88%, n = 53) of neu

Selective visual working memory in fear of spiders: the role of automaticity and material-specificity.

Following cognitive models of anxiety, biases occur if threat processing is automatic versus strategic. Therefore, most of these models predict attentional bias, but not explicit memory bias. We suggest dividing memory into the highly automatic working memory (WM) component versus long-term memory when investigating bias in anxiety. WM for threat has rarely been investigated although its main function is stimulus monitoring, particularly important in anxiety. We investigated WM for spiders in spider fearfuls (SFs) versus non-anxious controls (NACs). In Experiment 1 (23 SFs/24 NACs), we replica

A comparison of two word-recognition tasks in multitalker babble: Speech Recognition in Noise Test (SPRINT) and Words-in-Noise Test (WIN).

BACKGROUND: The Speech Recognition in Noise Test (SPRINT) is a word-recognition instrument that presents the 200 Northwestern University Auditory Test No. 6 (NU-6) words binaurally at 50 dB HL in a multitalker babble at a 9 dB signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) (Cord et al, 1992). The SPRINT was developed by and used by the Army as a more valid predictor of communication abilities (than pure-tone thresholds or word-recognition in quiet) for issues involving fitness for duty from a hearing perspective of Army personnel. The Words-in-Noise test (WIN) is a slightly different word-recognition task in a f

Use of psychometric-function slopes for forward-masked tones to investigate cochlear nonlinearity.

Schairer et al. [(2003). "Effects of peripheral nonlinearity on psychometric functions for forward-masked tones," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 133, 1560-1573] demonstrated that cochlear nonlinearity is reflected in psychometric-function (PF) slopes for 4 kHz forward-masked tones. The goals of the current study were to use PF slopes to compare the degree of compression between signal frequencies of 0.25 and 4 kHz in listeners with normal hearing (LNH), and between LNH and listeners with cochlear hearing loss (LHL). Forward-masked thresholds were estimated in LNH and LHL using on- and off-frequency maske

Forgetting due to retroactive interference: a fusion of Müller and Pilzecker's (1900) early insights into everyday forgetting and recent research on anterograde amnesia.

Ebbinghaus' seminal work suggested that forgetting occurred as a function of time. However, it raised a number of fundamental theoretical issues that still have not been resolved in the literature. Müller and Pilzecker (1900) addressed some of these issues in a remarkable manner but their observations have been mostly ignored in recent years. Müller and Pilzecker (1900) showed that the materials and the task that intervene between presentation and recall may interfere with the to-be-remembered items, and they named this phenomenon "retroactive interference" (RI). They further asked whether the

What defines a distracting injury in cervical spine assessment?

BACKGROUND: The National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study defined five criteria for obtaining cervical spine radiographic investigations in blunt trauma patients. Distracting injury was given as the indication for more than 30% of all x-ray studies ordered. The hypothesis of this study was that upper and lower torso injuries would have different effects on clinical cervical spine assessment. METHODS: This is a single-center, prospective, observational study of admitted, alert, adult blunt-trauma patients. All patients underwent cervical spine plain-film radiography. Data were collect

A diminished rate of "physiological decay" at noise offset contributes to age-related changes in temporal acuity in the CBA mouse model of presbycusis.

The persistence of afferent activity at stimulus offset was examined in mice as a function of age (experiment 1) and noise level (experiment 2), using a procedure devised by von Bekesy to study the physiological decay of afferent activity. Noise offset was presented from 1 to 10 ms (the temporal gap) prior to an acoustic startle stimulus, with an abrupt edge or a linear ramp having the duration of the gap. Noise offset inhibited the startle reflex, this effect declining with age. For young (2-3 months old) and "young-old" mice (18-19 months old), the abrupt offset was always more inhibitory th

Normalization models applied to orientation masking in the human infant.

Human infants can discriminate the orientation of lines within the first week after birth (Atkinson et al., 1988; Slater et al., 1988) but have immature orientation-selective pattern masking until after 6 months of age (Morrone and Burr, 1986). Here the development of orientation processing is further examined using a visual-evoked potential paradigm and normalization models of pattern masking. Contrast response functions were measured for 1 cycle per degree (cpd) gratings, counterphase-reversed in contrast at either 3.3 or 5.5 Hz. A second 1 cpd, 20% contrast, 8.3 Hz grating of either the sam

[Sensitivity and specificity of masked field campimetry].

Patients with circumscribed visual field defects are able to perceive the scotomata immediately while looking at randomly distributed black and white squares (12' x 12') flickering on a VDU with a high frequency (approximately 30 Hz), resulting in a stimulus field comparable to the white-noise field on a TV screen without reception. In 368 eyes of 368 patients with varying lesions of the visual pathway the results of white-noise field campimetry were compared with those of conventional threshold-related, slightly suprathreshold automated grid perimetry. Rate of detection (sensitivity) was 84.2

Auditory brainstem response. Sensory assessment by bone conduction masking.

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds to clicks were determined for 15 normal hearing adults and for four patients with conductive, sensorineural, or mixed hearing losses. Conductive losses were created in five of the normal hearing adult subjects for which threshold assessment was repeated. The response to a click at 5 dB above threshold was masked with a high-pass, bone-conducted noise. For both the patients and the normal subjects, subtracting 15 dB from the amount of noise required to mask this ABR response approximated sensory threshold. Tympanometry was performed on all patients,

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation reduces collinear lateral inhibition in normal peripheral vision.

Collinear flanking stimuli can reduce the detectability of a Gabor target presented in peripheral vision. This phenomenon is called collinear lateral inhibition and it may contribute to crowding in peripheral vision. Perceptual learning can reduce collinear lateral inhibition in peripheral vision, however intensive training is required. Our aim was to assess whether modulation of collinear lateral inhibition can be achieved within a short time-frame using a single 20-minute session of primary visual cortex anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS). Thirteen observers with normal

Digits-In-Noise Hearing Test Using Text-to-Speech and Automatic Speech Recognition: Proof-of-Concept Study.

This proof-of-concept study evaluated the implementation of a digits-in-noise test we call the 'AI-powered test' that used text-to-speech (TTS) and automatic speech recognition (ASR). Two other digits-in-noise tests formed the baselines for comparison: the 'keyboard-based test' which used the same configurations as the AI-powered test, and the 'independent test', a third-party-sourced test not modified by us. The validity of the AI-powered test was evaluated by measuring its difference from the independent test and comparing it with the baseline, which was the difference between the Keyboard-b

Forward-masking recovery and the assumptions of the temporal masking curve method of inferring cochlear compression.

The temporal masking curve (TMC) method is a behavioral technique for inferring human cochlear compression. The method relies on the assumptions that in the absence of compression, forward-masking recovery is independent of masker level and probe frequency. The present study aimed at testing the validity of these assumptions. Masking recovery was investigated for eight listeners with sensorineural hearing loss carefully selected to have absent or nearly absent distortion product otoacoustic emissions. It is assumed that for these listeners basilar membrane responses are linear, hence that mask

Spatial attention-related modulation of the N170 by backward masked fearful faces.

Facial expressions are a basic form of non-verbal communication that convey important social information to others. The relevancy of this information is highlighted by findings that backward masked facial expressions facilitate spatial attention. This attention effect appears to be mediated through a neural network consisting of the amygdala, anterior cingulate, and visual cortex. However, a direct investigation of the neural time course associated with orienting to such stimuli has yet to be performed. In the current investigation, a backward masked fearful face dot-probe task was performed w

Regional brain activity during early visual perception in unaffected siblings of schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: Visual masking paradigms assess the early part of visual information processing, which may reflect vulnerability measures for schizophrenia. We examined the neural substrates of visual backward performance in unaffected sibling of schizophrenia patients using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Twenty-one unaffected siblings of schizophrenia patients and 19 healthy controls performed a backward masking task and three functional localizer tasks to identify three visual processing regions of interest (ROI): lateral occipital complex (LO), the motion-sensitive area

Design of a placebo-controlled, randomized study of the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of chronic tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tinnitus is a frequent condition, which can have enormous impact on patient's life and which is very difficult to treat. Accumulating data indicate that chronic tinnitus is related to dysfunctional neuronal activity in the central nervous system. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive method which allows to focally modulate neuronal activity. An increasing amount of studies demonstrate reduction of tinnitus after repeated sessions of low-frequency rTMS and indicate that rTMS might represent a new promising approach for the treatment of tinnitu

Speech recognition in noise as a function of highpass-filter cutoff frequency for people with and without low-frequency cochlear dead regions.

Regions in the cochlea with very few functioning inner hair cells and/or neurons are called "dead regions" (DRs). Previously, we measured the recognition of highpass-filtered nonsense syllables as a function of filter cutoff frequency for hearing-impaired people with and without low-frequency (apical) DRs [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 122, 542-553 (2007)]. DRs were diagnosed using the TEN(HL) test, and psychophysical tuning curves were used to define the edge frequency (fe) more precisely. Stimuli were amplified differently for each ear, using the "Cambridge formula." The present study was similar, but
