Acceptance and commitment therapy can reduce anxiety and enhance self-efficacy, mental toughness, and sleep quality in wrestlers with anxiety.

This study investigates the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in improving sleep quality and psychological well-being among wrestlers experiencing anxiety. A total of 33 wrestlers (mean age: 22.95) were randomly assigned to either an 8-week ACT intervention or a waitlist control group. Utilizing a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design, the study assessed key outcomes, including anxiety, self-efficacy, mental toughness, and sleep quality. The results revealed significant time and group interactions, with ACT demonstrating a substantial reduction in anxiety, an increas

Altered Reward Processing in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Insights From Active and Observational Learning.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been associated with altered performance monitoring, reflected in enhanced amplitudes of the error-related negativity in the event-related potential. However, this is not specific to OCD, as overactive error processing is also evident in anxiety. Although similar neural mechanisms have been proposed for error and feedback processing, it remains unclear whether the processing of errors as indexed by external feedback, reflected in the feedback-related negativity (FRN), is altered in OCD. Likewise, it is currently unknown whether performance monitoring in

Examining Safety Behavior Subtypes Across Distinct Social Contexts in Social Anxiety Disorder and Major Depression.

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) use different types of safety behaviors that have been classified as avoidance vs. impression management. The current study investigated differences in safety behavior subtype use in 132 individuals with principal diagnoses of social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 69), major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 30), and nonpatient controls (n = 33) across two social contexts: an interpersonal relationship-building task (social affiliation) and a speech task (social performance). We examined whether diagnostic groups differed in safety behavior subtype use and whe

Stroop performance in bipolar disorder: further evidence for abnormalities in the ventral prefrontal cortex.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar patients are impaired in Stroop task performance, a measure of selective attention. Structural and functional abnormalities in task-associated regions, in particular the prefrontal cortex (PFC), have been reported in this population. We aimed to examine the relationship between functional abnormalities, impaired task performance and the severity of depressive symptoms in bipolar patients. METHODS: Remitted bipolar patients (n = 10; all medicated), either euthymic or with subsyndromal depression, and age-matched control subjects (n = 11) viewed 10 alternating blocks of inco

Discovery of serum biomarkers predicting development of a subsequent depressive episode in social anxiety disorder.

Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is strongly associated with the subsequent development of a depressive disorder (major depressive disorder or dysthymia), no underlying biological risk factors are known. We aimed to identify biomarkers which predict depressive episodes in SAD patients over a 2-year follow-up period. One hundred sixty-five multiplexed immunoassay analytes were investigated in blood serum of 143 SAD patients without co-morbid depressive disorders, recruited within the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). Predictive performance of identified biomarkers, clin

A Pilot Study of Gender Differences in Sexual Arousal of Patients With OCD: The Moderator Roles of Attachment and Contamination Symptoms.

Sexual arousal is often impaired in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, little is known about the factors related to this impairment: no study focused on the role of gender-based effects of attachment styles and contamination symptoms. The Dual Control Model assumes three processes driving sexual arousal: sexual excitation (SE), sexual inhibition (SI) due to threat of performance failure, and SI due to threat of performance consequences (e.g., getting contaminated with sexually transmitted diseases). In a group of OCD patients, we hypothesized that (a) women report lowe

Factor structure of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) in a clinical sample recruited from the community.

BACKGROUND: The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used self-report questionnaires to assess symptoms of social anxiety. While SPS measures social performance anxiety, SIAS measures social interaction anxiety. They are mostly reported simultaneously, but there have not been consistent results of the joint factor structure and therefore no consistent recommendations on how to use and evaluate the questionnaires. This study aimed (1) to evaluate the underlying joint factor structure of the SPS and SIAS and (2) to test whether SPS and SIAS are rel…

Ibudilast perpetuates stress-induced anxiety-like behavior and fear memory expression in adult Sprague-Dawley rats.

The relationship between neuroinflammatory processes and stress-related disorders is complex with neuroinflammation both resulting from, and contributing to, the stress response. Findings from both preclinical studies and clinical trials suggest that ibudilast (IBUD), a glial cell activation attenuator and phosphodiesterase inhibitor, has shown promise for mitigating the adverse behavioral effects of stress exposure and stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of IBUD administration on anxiety-like behavioral performance and fear

Multimodal, multi-device wearable phenotyping for early childhood mental health: balancing predictive performance and implementation burden.

Childhood mental health conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, and depression affect 13- 20% of children, yet 25-62% go undetected and untreated. Pediatric digital phenotyping could add objective signal, but prior work has largely tested single modalities, leaving open which signals matter most and whether combining them helps. We analyzed electrodermal, cardiovascular, temperature, movement, and speech (acoustic and linguistic) data from 103 children aged 4-8 during a ∼7-minute structured behavioral assessment. Machine-learning models trained against gold-standard clinical-interview diagnoses disc
