The definitive diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma and its differentiation from metastatic peritoneal carcinomatosis may be difficult because of the clinical, macroscopic, and microscopic variability of the tumor. To this purpose, a combination of criteria, including the clinical picture, the gross pathologic findings, the exclusion of other primary neoplasms, and the microscopic findings, must be taken into consideration. Conventionally, these criteria may be established only after surgical exploration and extensive sampling. Our experience with patients with peritoneal mesothelioma and meta

Peritoneal tuberculosis was diagnosed in a 38-year-old man from Curaçao, a 42-year-old Dutch man and a 38-year-old woman from Surinam. All patients had been living in the Netherlands for over a decade at the time of diagnosis. Time to diagnosis and treatment varied between patients. Factors contributing to delayed diagnosis were nonspecific symptoms, failure to consider tuberculosis exposure, consulting of more than one physician and delay in obtaining adequate material for histopathologic and microbiologic tests. These cases show that peritoneal tuberculosis can represent a diagnostic challen

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a non-atherosclerotic, non-amyloid cerebral angiopathy involving small arteries and arterioles. This entity presents vascular changes in the form of smooth muscle degeneration with swollen myocytes and PAS-positive granular deposits, together with vascular fibrosis and hyalinization. In parallel, diffuse white matter destruction with infarcts, tissue rarefaction, spongiosis, lacunes and demyelination are characteristic. Ultrastructurally, vascular granular osmiophilic material (GOM) is patho

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal gliomatosis is characterized by the presence of miliary implants of mature glia on the peritoneum of patients with ovarian teratomas, usually immature.
CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a woman operated on 5 years earlier due to a right mature ovarian teratoma. When she was operated on due to left ovarian tumor she presented a miliary glial dissemination in omentum and peritoneum.
CONCLUSION: The association of peritoneal gliomatosis ovarian teratomas is rare. Although the primary treatment and patient monitoring is focused on the teratoma, control should be maintai

Several gastrointestinal and gynecological malignancies have the potential to disseminate and grow in the peritoneal cavity. The occurrence of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) has been shown to significantly decrease overall survival in patients with liver and/or extraperitoneal metastases from gastrointestinal cancer. During the last three decades, the understanding of the biology and pathways of dissemination of tumors with intraperitoneal spread, and the understanding of the protective function of the peritoneal barrier against tumoral seeding, has prompted the concept that PC is a loco-regio

The peritoneum is one of the locations outside the most common pulmonary tuberculosis. Peritoneal tuberculosis poses a public health problem in endemic regions of the world. The phenomenon of migration, the increased use of immunosuppressive therapy and the epidemic of AIDS have contributed to a resurgence of this disease in regions where it was previously controlled. The aim of this review is to expose the clinical, biologic end radiologic futures of the peritoneal tuberculosis and to present the methods of diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis of this disease is difficult and still remains

Secondary peritoneal hydatidosis is caused by spontaneous or iatrogenic rupture of hepatic echinococcal cysts. We describe the case of a 65-year-old Tunisian male patient with previous history of liver hydatidosis who presented to our attention with subocclusive status. Imaging revealed a retrovesical hydatid cyst, adherent to the sigmoid colon. The treatment of choice was surgical removal of the cyst and the sigmoid colon. The patient is now being closely followed up.

Peritoneal dialysis related infections include infection of the catheter exit site, subcutaneous pathway, or effluent. Exit-site infections, … and can be reduced by mupirocin prophylaxis either intranasally or at the exit site. Patients with peritonitis present with cloudy effluent and usually pain, although 6% of patients may initially have pain without cloudy effluent. A white blood cell count of 100 or greater per microL, 50% of which are polymorphonuclear cells, has long been the hallmark of pe …

Peritoneal echinococcosis is rare, even in areas where hydatid disease is endemic. Although the liver and lungs are the organs most commonly involved, peritoneal echinococcosis, either primary or secondary, represents an uncommon but significant manifestation of the disease. We reviewed the medical records of 121 patients with abdominal echinococcosis operated on in our department over the past 12 years. Peritoneal echinococcosis was found in 17 patients, usually combined with liver disease. The presenting symptoms were mostly atypical, and a few cases were discovered accidentally during routi

Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis. Involvement of the peritoneum is unusual, with only two previously reported cases that occurred in association with disseminated disease. A single case of histopathologically proven blastomycosis involving the peritoneum is presented, as well as a short overview of previously published cases on gastrointestinal and peritoneal blastomycosis. The case is unique in that chronic peritonitis was the only manifestation of disease. The diagnosis was made by laparoscopy.

The authors analyzed evolution of therapeutic approaches for acute peritonitis with accent on abdominal drainage. A systematic review enrolled the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, eLibrary and Cochrane Library databases for the period 1980-2024. Methods of abdominal sanitation in acute peritonitis underwent through a long way of evolution from simple passive drainage to complex programmed interventions. Historically, various approaches have been used (from closed systems to open abdominal management with laparostomy). The middle of the 20th century was marked by revolution of programmed relapar…

INTRODUCTION: The connection between peritoneal function and gut microbiota in peritoneal fibrosis (PF) patients remains uncertain.
METHODS: Peritoneal equilibration test (PET) was employed to evaluate peritoneal function in patients with peritoneal fibrosis (PF). 16S rRNA sequencing was used to analyze the gut flora in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) and PF groups, identifying differential microbial communities. Spearman's correlation analysis, conducted using SPSS 26.0, was employed to explore the microbial associations with PF.
RESULTS: In the PF group, the PET showed a 4-h dialysate-to
