Many drugs, industrial pollutants, and other xenobiotics are known to be oxidized by peroxidases to potentially harmful free-radical intermediates. Glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-PX) and malondialdehyde (MDA) level of experimental traumatic cataract in rabbit were determined at various intervals after needling. GSH-PX activities decreased in the lens after perforated trauma from 8 hours to 21 days, meanwhile the MDA level increased markedly. The results demonstrate that free radicals are involved in the formation of traumatic cataract.

Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) located in the apical plasma membrane of follicular cells was investigated by means of a membrane-immunofluorescent technique. The epitope of TPO recognized by a murine monoclonal antibody (mAb 30.1.2) was identified on the apical membrane surface. The interpretation of immunoperoxidase staining of frozen tissue sections can be severely limited by the presence of endogenous peroxidase enzymes in the tissue. For the detection of cancerous and precancerous lesions in cervical cytopathology, the feasibility of a concanavalin A-peroxidase labeling procedure was tested and compared with the Papanicolaou method.
