Commentary: An exemplar of progress in understanding complex disorders - reflections on what we have learned about eating disorders (Culbert et al., 2015).

A number of recent advances in eating disorders research have helped clarify the nature of risk for the development of such disorders. Culbert et al. () provide an empirical and thoughtful review of these recent advances. The authors identified empirically established risk factors in each of several categories of risk for eating disorders: genetic influences, neurotransmitter activity, hormones, personality, and sociocultural influences. We highlight three implications of their review. First, the review can serve as an important asset to eating disorder researchers, both substantively, by prov

Psychological characteristics of patients with Ménière's disease compared with patients with vertigo, tinnitus, or hearing loss.

An association between Ménière 's disease and psychological distress is frequently reported. Patients who do not have Ménière's disease but who have similar symptoms also experience various kinds of psychological disturbances. We conducted a study to investigate the relationship between Ménière's disease and personality traits, illness behavior, depression, and anxiety. We compared these factors in 77 patients who had Ménière's disease and 133 controls who did not have the disease but had one of its symptoms--either vertigo, tinnitus, or hearing loss. The mental status of study participants wa

Dual-task information processing in schizotypal personality disorder: evidence of impaired processing capacity.

Working memory theories heavily rely on the concept of processing resources and the their efficient deployment. Some recent work with schizophrenia-spectrum patients has suggested that many associated cognitive impairments may be reduced to deficits in working memory, possibly related to reductions in information-processing capacity resources. In this study, 38 patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), 22 patients with other personality disorders, and 14 healthy comparison participants performed a dual-task processing assessment that was designed specifically for use in this type o

Sociopsychiatric characteristic of clinic patrons with repeat gonorrhea infections.

This study compared repeat gonorrhea patients with nonrepeat patients and control patients not having venereal disease. Focus was given to current intellectual and personality attributes as well as a broad spectrum of background factors in social, familial, educational, and sexual history. One-tailed t-tests were computed on the myriad permutations of patient group and the multiple derived scores from the personality and intellectual assessments. The results show no significant differences between the patients having their first infection of VD and the patients with repeat VD; however, when th

Factors Associated with Suicide Attempts in Adults with ADHD: Findings from a Clinical Study.

Background and Objectives: Suicidality in adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an emerging clinical concern, yet its mechanisms and risk factors are not fully understood. Specifically, little is known about the characteristics of suicide attempts (SAs), including the use of violent/nonviolent methods. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and methods of SA in adults with ADHD and to identify associated sociodemographic and clinical factors. Materials and Methods: The sample included 211 adult outpatients with ADHD. Patients were grouped based on the presence/

Neuropsychological and Criminological Features of Female Homicide Offenders.

Few studies have examined life history and cognitive characteristics unique to female homicide offenders. Understanding these characteristics could aid in risk assessment for extreme violence in this group of offenders. The current study utilized t-tests or chi-square tests to compare 27 female and 81 male homicide offenders on psychiatric, neurologic, criminal, and cognitive characteristics. Additionally, we explored the role of abuse history in female offenders through Kruskal-Wallis or Fisher's exact tests. Results indicate that in comparison with male counterparts, females are more likely

Clinical patterns in social cognition & personality changes in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Research suggests some individuals with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) have socioemotional deficits, typically characterized as reduced emotion recognition, difficulty with perspective taking, and increased apathy. However, the variability of these deficits across individuals and the pattern of impairments across the spectrum of social cognition have not been quantified in larger samples. The present study used multiple face-to-face and informant-based social cognition, neuropsychiatry, and personality measures to identify socioemotional changes occurring as a result of PSP. Data were co

Trait sensitivity to stress and cognitive bias processes in fish: A brief overview.

Like other animals, fish have unique personalities that can affect their cognition and responses to environmental stressors. These individual personality differences are often referred to as "behavioural syndromes" or "stress coping styles" and can include personality traits such as boldness, shyness, aggression, exploration, locomotor activity, and sociability. For example, bolder or proactive fish may be more likely to take risks and present lower hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal/interrenal axis reactivity as compared to shy or reactive individuals. Likewise, learning and memory differ between

Personality traits as predictors of exercise treatment adherence in major depressive disorder: lessons from a randomised clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the determinants of adherence in the EFFORT-D (EFFect Of Running Therapy) study in a specialised mental health care hospital setting. METHODS: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) were given treatment as usual and half were randomised to an exercise intervention. Adherence was measured at 3 months (T3) and 6 months (T6) and was defined as participation in the overall study protocol (total n = 42, adhered n = 28) or intervention (total n = 24, adhered n = 9). Potential determinants were age, BMI, tobacco and alcohol use, severity o

[Fronto-temporal dementia].

Defined barely one decade ago, Frontotemporal Dementia emerges as a new clinical entity that reestablishes the classical Pick's disease as part of a extensive syndrome with important and unsuspected prevalence. Frontotemporal Dementia includes all primary degenerative processes starting in the anterior portions of the brain. This type of dementia is clinically characterized by behavior and personality disorders, more than cognitive alterations. In the present research we performed a bibliographic review of the subject including clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, and neuropathology. Fu

[Grief experience by 154 young adults in the general population (value of the TRIG grief scale). Texas Revised Inventory of Grief].

154 young adults (25-35 years old) of the general population completed tests and questionnaires in order to find correlations between the scores at the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, TRIG (Faschingbauer et al. 1977) and several personality variables (depression, anxiety-state and -trait, self-esteem, locus of control, social support, and tobacco dependency). The correlation between all these variables are presented and discussed. TRIG, in its French translation and validation, proves to be a reliable and specific instrument in the assessment of bereavement (past and current distress, and co

Psychological features of women with idiopathic detrusor instability.

Psychological tests were completed by 57 incontinent women with idiopathic detrusor instability, and compared with those of 22 women with genuine stress incontinence (an anatomical disorder) and published norms. The previously reported findings of hysterical personality traits, situational stresses and sexual dysfunction in patients with detrusor instability were not confirmed. Higher scores for anxiety, neuroticism, hostility, and depression were found in patients with detrusor instability than in controls. These findings, known associations of psychosomatic disorders, lend further support to

Noncredible cognitive performance in the context of severe brain injury.

In two litigating patients with histories of severe brain injury (i.e., coma > or =2 days and residual brain imaging abnormalities), noncredible cognitive symptomatology was demonstrated by: (1) "Ошибка" performance on multiple cognitive "effort" tests, (2) noncredible performance on standard neuropsychological instruments, (3) questionable validity of personality inventory profiles, and (4) marked inconsistency in test performance across testing evaluations or marked inconsistency between test scores and activities of daily living documented through surveillance videotapes. Some patients with

The Psychosis Recent Onset GRoningen Survey (PROGR-S): defining dimensions and improving outcomes in early psychosis.

Psychotic disorders are among the most complex medical conditions. Longitudinal cohort studies may offer further insight into determinants of functional outcome after a psychotic episode. This paper describes the Psychosis Recent Onset in GRoningen Survey (PROGR-S) that currently contains data on 1076 early-episode patients with psychosis, including symptoms, personality, cognition, life events and other outcome determinants. Our goal in this report is to give an overview of PROGR-S, as a point of reference for future publications on the effect of cognition, personality and psychosocial functi

Decision-making deficits in normal elderly persons associated with executive personality disturbances.

BACKGROUND: The problems that some community-dwelling elderly persons develop in real-world decision-making may have disastrous consequences for their health and financial well-being. Investigations across the adult life span have identified personality as an important individual differences variable that is related to decision-making ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality characteristics, as rated by an informant, and complex decision-making performance among elderly persons. It was hypothesized that deficits in decision-making would be associat

[Nosogeny in "silent" myocardial ischemia].

Psychical reactions to ischemic cardiac disease (ICD) without angina pectoris in 29 patients with "silent" myocardial ishemia were investigated. It was demonstrated that both hypo- and hypernosognosias were observed in such patients. The former were presented by antihypochondria in individuals with hyperthymic or expansive schizoid personal features meanwhile the latter--by neurotic hypochondria in patients with hysterical characteristics. The severity of somatic state as well as myocardial ischemia manifestation were the same both in hypo- and hypernosognosias patients. There were no syndroma

Pharmacotherapy of personality disorders: conceptual framework and clinical strategies.

This article delineates the conceptual models used when medications are prescribed for patients with personality disorders and reviews the data on the efficacy of these medications. Studies before 1980 are difficult to interpret because of changes in diagnostic criteria. Nonetheless, early studies on non-DSM-III disorders such as pseudoneurotic schizophrenia, emotionally unstable character disorder, hysteroid dysphoria, and subaffective disorders indicated the potential utility of pharmacotherapy for treating personality disorders. Models to consider in evaluating the possible use of medicatio
