Suicide attempts were examined in relation to sociodemographic (age, gender, ethnicity), psychopathological (prior psychiatric hospitalizations, physical and sexual abuse histories), and cognitive (personal need for structure) variables among a sample of ex-offenders with substance use disorders ( N = 270). In order to assess Axis II pathology in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patients as compared to other anxiety disorder patients, the Personality Disorder Examination was administered to 258 anxiety disorder patients. In contrast to a number of recent reports, a low rate of personality disorder diagnoses were found in the OCD sample as well as the anxiety disorder control subjects. The findings of the current investigation are discussed in terms of state-trait confounding.

Thirty-two patients with coexisting substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders were treated in a unique outpatient pilot program that used techniques drawn from both psychiatric and substance abuse treatment.
