Noninvasive evaluation of venous function in chronic venous disease.

Measurements of calf volume changes during treadmill ambulation were taken using mercury-in-Silastic (silicone rubber) strain gauges for noninvasive study of venous function in patients with chronic venous disease. Seventy-four limbs were evaluated: 24 with postphlebitic changes, 26 with superficial varicosities, and 24 normal. Calf volume changes as measured by mercury-in-Silastic strain-gauge plethysmography (MISSGP) during ambulation correlated well (r = 0.8) with simultaneously obtained direct venous pressure measurements. The refill time as measured by MISSGP also correlated with the pres

Clinical implications of gonadal venography in the management of the non-palpable undescended testis.

Selective gonadal venography was used on 28 patients with a total of 34 non-palpable undescended testes. The data obtained in this study suggest that 1) an internal spermatic vein with a pampiniform-like plexus indicates the presence of a testis, 2) a blind-ending vein on venography suggests the absence of a testis, 3) an internal spermatic vein or vas deferens may be present without a testis, 4) a testis probably cannot be present without a gonadal vein, 5) a testis may be present without a vas, 6) a blind-ending vas deferens does not necessarily indicate the absence of a testis and 7) a blin

[Azygography in the study of malignant tumours of the oesophagus (author's transl)].

Up to the present time, no simple method has existed for gauging the true size of an oesophageal tumour. The intimate relations between the azygos vein and the oesophagus in the thorax between D3 and D8 justifies this new study: azygography. On the basis of 40 examinations, 13 of which were followed by surgery in patients suffering from carcinoma of the oesophagus, as was indicated by classical anatomical data, azygography made possible the evaluation of tumour extension in the mediastinum and the involvement of adjacent structures, such as the right pulmonary artery. Azygography thus aided in

Precentral cerebellar vein in cystic astrocytomas of the vermis.

A peculiar abnormality of the precentral cerebellar vein seen only in cystic astrocytoma of the vermis is reported. Implications of this angiographic finding are discussed. The importance of posterior fossa angiography (especially venography) in the diagnosis of posterior fossa mass lesions is emphasized.
