DFT study of halogenated InTeX (X = Cl, Br and I) monolayers: promising 2D materials for nanoelectronics.

First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the structural, electronic, mechanical, and spintronic properties of InTeX (X = Cl, Br, and I) monolayers formed via full halogenation of pristine InTe. Halogenation induces a structural transformation from the four-sublayer Te-In-In-Te configuration to a three-sublayer Te-In-X geometry, accompanied by the formation of polar covalent In-X bonds and the suppression of metallic In-In interactions. The resulting monolayers preserve a buckled hexagonal lattice and exhibit enhanced thermodynamic, thermal, and dynamical stability. InTeX mon

Curvature-Induced Giant Second-Harmonic Generation in WS2 Nanoscroll on a Metallic Film.

Curvature in two-dimensional (2D) materials presents an effective approach for modulating their electronic structures and nonlinear optical properties; however, its influence on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we introduce a straightforward method to convert monolayer WS2 into quasi-one-dimensional nanoscrolls via solvent-assisted rolling on metallic substrates, yielding a curved multilayer architecture characterized by pronounced strain gradients and symmetry breaking. The resulting WS2 nanoscrolls demonstrate an enhancement in second-

Disentangling Polymorphism, Texture, and Molecular Orientation in TIPS-Pentacene Thin Films by Polarized Raman Spectroscopy.

Thin-film processing can alter the crystal structure of organic semiconductors, making it difficult to disentangle the respective roles of polymorphism, texture, and molecular orientation in the charge transport. Here, highly oriented thin films of 6,13-bis-(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) prepared by bar-assisted meniscus shearing are investigated by combining grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, polarized Raman spectroscopy, and periodic first-principles calculations. We show that bar-assisted meniscus shearing does not generate a distinct thin film polymorph under the i

Fluorination Effects in Hexagonal XY (X, Y = C, Ge, Si, Sn; X ≠ Y) Monolayers and vdW Heterostructures: Insights from Ab Initio Calculations.

By combining hybrid ab initio electronic-structure calculations that include spin-orbit coupling with phonon-spectrum calculations and molecular-dynamics simulations, we systematically investigate a family of hexagonal XY and fluorinated XYF2 monolayers (X, Y = C, Si, Ge, Sn; X ≠ Y). All compounds are confirmed to be dynamically and thermally stable, with fluorination being exothermic and further enhancing lattice robustness. Fluorination universally drives a transition from planar sp2 to buckled sp3 structures, which strongly affects the electronic structure. For instance, CSi, CGe, and CSn a

Robustness of surface edge states in the presence of weak, localized disorder.

Edge states are expected to allow for robust, nearly lossless transport along surfaces and interfaces in the presence of disorder. Here we show that this expectation can break down when localized random surface perturbation enables coupling between surface waves and bulk modes, even when it is a weak perturbation. We study the transmission of edge states in a conservative, prototypical spring-mass lattice half plane whose boundary is perturbed by finitely many random variations of surface masses or surface springs. We analyze how an incident surface wave is reflected, transmitted, and partiall

Photoresponsive Charge-Lattice Interplay in Layered Lead-Free Cs3Sb2Cl9 Perovskite Crystals.

The search for stable, nontoxic alternatives to lead-based halide perovskites has directed significant attention toward the Cs3Sb2Cl9 compound, a promising lead-free material with a layered crystal structure. In this study, we comprehensively investigate the structural, thermal, optical, vibrational, and electrical properties of high-quality Cs3Sb2Cl9 single crystals. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of a well-crystallized trigonal phase (P-3m1), with lattice parameters consistent with prior reports. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals thermal stability up to 321 °C

Magnetic Anisotropy in the Homoleptic [CoX4]2- (X = Cl, Br, I) Series: Spectroscopic Determination and Ligand Field Studies.

Four-coordinate transition metal complexes with unpaired electrons (S ≥ 1) typically exhibit structures deviated from perfect Td geometry, leading to magnetic anisotropy. (NEt4)2[CoX4] (X = Cl, Co-Cl; Br, Co-Br; I, Co-I) with pseudotetrahedral structures are an ideal series to explore how deviation from perfect Td geometry is reflected in magnetic anisotropy. This work presents comprehensive studies of Co-X, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction of Co-Cl and Co-I, measurements of DC and AC magnetic susceptibilities, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), far-infrared magneto-spectroscopy (FI

Breaking the Thermal Conductivity-Latent Heat Trade-Off: Hierarchical Core-Shell Phase-Change Graphene Fiber Frameworks for Advanced Thermal Management.

The rapid miniaturization of electronic devices has exponentially increased power densities, making heat accumulation and transient thermal shocks primary bottlenecks. Phase-change thermal interface materials (PC-TIMs) offer a promising solution, but their application is hindered by low intrinsic thermal conductivity and liquid leakage. Furthermore, traditional outside-in impregnation strategies suffer from a severe trade-off between thermal conductivity enhancement and latent heat preservation. In this work, a hierarchical inside-out structural engineering strategy is proposed to fabricate a

Octahedral tilting in halide double perovskites: disentangling lone-pair chemistry and geometric effects.

Halide double perovskites (HDPs) have emerged as promising alternatives to their lead-based counterparts. However, their structural dynamics is less explored than that of conventional halide perovskites. In this work, we investigate octahedral tilting at 0 K and the relative stability of tetragonal and cubic phases of a set of 57 HDPs. By combining structural and energetic descriptors with simple geometric metrics, we identify the main trends controlling the stabilization of one-tilt tetragonal phases across this family. We find that both the magnitude of the tilt angles and the energetic pref

Photothermal catalysis of waste plastics into propionic acid and hydrogen via Ni single-atom site isolation effect.

Currently, catalytic recycling of polyethylene (PE) into high-value chemicals using solar energy often faces poor product selectivity and low efficiency. This is mainly due to the difficulty in effectively controlling the intermediates during PE photoreforming and the long-standing challenge of inefficient charge dynamics. Here, we present a solar-driven photothermal catalytic approach for the selective conversion of PE waste into propionic acid and hydrogen under ambient conditions. Atomically dispersed Ni sites supported on CeO2 (NiSA/CeO2) achieve a propionic acid yield of 331 μmol h-1 with

Ultraviolet‑C Upconversion Luminescence of Pr3+-Doped Fluorophosphate Glass.

The increasing demand for ultraviolet (UV) sterilization requires the development of new luminescent materials in the UVC region (100-280 nm). In this study, to obtain blue-to-UVC upconversion (UC) luminescence, fluorophosphate glasses doped with various Pr3+ concentrations were prepared by using the melt-quenching method, and their optical properties were evaluated. Absorption bands attributed to the 4f15d1 → 4f2 and 4f2 → 4f2 transitions of Pr3+ were observed at shorter than 230 nm and in the 430-490 nm range, respectively. The relatively high phonon energies promote strong 1D2 emission, whi

Ultrafast laser-enabled optoacoustic characterization of three-dimensional, nanoscopic interior features of microchips.

The recent advances in micromanufacturing have been pushing boundaries of the new generation of semiconductor devices, which, in the meantime, brings new challenges in the material and structural characterization - a key step to ensure the device quality through the micromanufacturing process. An ultrafast laser-enable optoacoustic characterization methodology is developed, targeting in situ calibration and delineation of the three-dimensional (3-D), nanoscopic interior features of opaque semiconductor chips. With the guidance of ultrafast electron-phonon coupling effect and velocity-perturbat

Near-Infrared Light-Induced Spin-State Switching Based on Fe(II)-Hg(II) Spin-Crossover Network.

The development of molecular switches with tunable properties has garnered considerable interest over several decades. A novel spin-crossover (SCO) material based on iron(II) complexes incorporating 4-acetylpyridine (4-acpy) and [Hg(SCN)4]2- anions was synthesized and formulated as [Fe(4-acpy)2][Hg(μ-SCN)4] (1). Compound 1 is crystallized in a three-dimensional network in the non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Pna21 with two octahedral [Fe(4-acpy)2(NCS)4] entities featuring two distinct Fe centers (Fe1 and Fe2). Crystallographic, magnetic, and Mössbauer measurements reveal an incompl

2D-Penta-PdPS: Gate-Tunable and Thickness-Dependent Thermoelectric Transport.

Pentagonal two-dimensional (2D) materials are notable for unique properties derived from their Cairo pentagonal tiling topology. This study explores the thermoelectric potential of exfoliated penta-palladium-phosphorus-sulfur (PdPS) atomic layers, an air-stable 2D semiconductor with a puckered pentagonal low-symmetry structure, grown via chemical vapor transport (CVT). Thickness-dependent in-plane electrical conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power factor (PF) of PdPS are investigated from 20-380 K, showing an increase in σ with thickness (11, 13, and 88-layer). Applying back-gate voltage (Vg

Ferromagnetic vanadium disulfide VS2 monolayers with high Curie temperature and high spin polarization.

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of vanadium disulfide VS2 monolayers were investigated using first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The results of molecular dynamics simulations and phonon dispersion showed that the VS2 monolayer has good dynamic and thermodynamic stabilities. Based on the results of the band structure, we also explore the effect of carrier concentrations on the spin gap, spin polarization and the direction of the easy magnetic axis. Our results demonstrated that doping an appropriate amount of holes can cause the reversal of the ea

Study of Two-Dimensional Janus WXY (X≠Y= S, Se, and Te) Trilayer Homostructures for Photovoltaic Applications Using DFT Screening of Different Stacking Patterns.

Based on the first-principles density functional theory, Janus WXY (X ≠ Y = S, Se, and Te) trilayer homostructures for different stacking patterns are studied in this work to analyze their appropriateness in fabricating photovoltaic (PV) devices. A total of fifteen trilayer homostructures are proposed, corresponding to the suitable five stacking patterns, such as AAA, AA'A, ABA, AB'A, and A'BA' for each Janus WXY (X ≠ Y = S, Se, and Te) material. Structural and energetic parameters for all the fifteen structures are evaluated and compared to find energetically stable structures, and dynamic st

Anisotropic Rashba splitting in Pt-based Janus monolayers PtXY (X,Y = S, Se, or Te).

Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of synthesizing two-dimensional (2D) Janus materials which possess intrinsic structural asymmetry. Hence, we performed a systematic first-principles study of 2D Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers based on PtXY (X,Y = S, Se, or Te). Our calculated formation energies show that these monolayer Janus structures retain the 1T phase. Furthermore, phonon spectral calculations confirm that these Janus TMD monolayers are thermodynamically stable. We found that PtSSe, PtSTe, and PtSeTe exhibit an insulating phase with indirect band gap

Layered tin monoselenide as advanced photothermal conversion materials for efficient solar energy-driven water evaporation.

Solar energy-driven water evaporation lays a solid foundation for important photothermal applications such as sterilization, seawater desalination, and electricity generation. Due to the strong light-matter coupling, broad absorption wavelength range, and prominent quantum confinement effect, layered tin monoselenide (SnSe) holds a great potential to effectively harness solar irradiation and convert it to heat energy. In this study, SnSe is successfully deposited on a centimeter-scale nickel foam using a facile one-step pulsed-laser deposition approach. Importantly, the maximum evaporation rat
