Arousal and affective differences between student gamblers and non-gamblers during a card game.

The current study examined the differences in arousal (physiologically and subjectively) between gamblers and non-gamblers. Thirty students from a mid-sized university took part in the study for a chance to win money in a gambling task. Nearly half of the participants identified themselves as non-gamblers and slightly more than half of the participants considered themselves gamblers. Findings indicated that gamblers experienced a significantly higher increase in physiological arousal (heart rate) compared to non-gamblers during the gambling experience. The results suggests the possibility that

Deep reinforcement learning for multi-targets propofol dosing.

The administration of propofol for sedation or general anesthesia presents challenges due to the complex relationship between patient factors and real-time physiological responses. This study explores the application of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to automate propofol dosing, aiming to maintain multiple physiological parameters including bispectral index (BIS), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) within safe and desired ranges. A multi-variable pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) simulation environment was developed to model the effects of propofo

Behavioral Avoidance - Will Physiological Insecticide Resistance Level of Insect Strains Affect Their Oviposition and Movement Responses?

Agricultural organisms, such as insect herbivores, provide unique opportunities for studies of adaptive evolutionary processes, including effects of insecticides on movement and oviposition behavior. In this study, Brassica leaves were treated with one of two non-systemic insecticides and exposed to two individual strains (referred to as single or double resistance) of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) (DBM) exhibiting physiological resistance. Behavioral responses by these two strains were compared as part of characterizing the relative effect of levels of physiological resistance on the

Anxiety-related attentional characteristics and their relation to freezing of gait in people with Parkinson's: Cross-validation of the Adapted Gait Specific Attentional Profile (G-SAP).

BackgroundAnxiety often exacerbates freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's (PwP). Anxiety-related attentional processes and associated processing inefficiencies, like conscious movement processing (CMP) and ruminations, can substantially impact movement control. However, their impact on FOG remains largely unexplored.ObjectiveTo validate an adapted 10-item (1-5 Likert scale) Gait-Specific Attentional Profile (G-SAP) in PwP and assess if adapted G-SAP-subscales (Physiological Arousal, CMP, Rumination, and Processing Inefficiencies) are associated with self-reported FOG frequency.Meth

Pediatric Burn Resuscitation.

Children have unique physiologic, physical, psychological, and social needs compared with adults. Although adhering to the basic tenets of burn resuscitation, resuscitation of the burned child should be modified based on the child's age, physiology, and response to injury. This article outlines the unique characteristics of burned children and describes the fundamental principles of pediatric burn resuscitation in terms of airway, circulatory, neurologic, and cutaneous injury management.

Physiologic Pacing in Heart Failure.

Cardiac physiologic pacing, also known as cardiac resynchronization therapy, is indicated in patients with heart failure, reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 50% or less, and either a high (or anticipated high) ventricular pacing burden or a wide QRS complex. Traditionally, physiologic pacing has been achieved with biventricular pacing with a right ventricular lead and a coronary sinus branch lead. Randomized trials involving more than 10,000 patients with heart failure have shown clinical, exercise, and quality-of-life benefits associated with biventricular pacing, as well as

Single-Cell Sequencing Identifies the Crucial Role of Mitochondrial Fission-Fusion Imbalance in Heart Failure Progression.

The heart grows in response to both pathological and physiological stimuli. Pathological hypertrophy often leads to cardiomyocyte loss and heart failure (HF), whereas physiological hypertrophy paradoxically protects the heart. Comparing these two types of hypertrophy can elucidate the differences and connections in their molecular mechanisms, which is pivotal for unraveling the pathogenesis of HF. This study compares pathological (TAC-induced) and physiological (exercise-induced) cardiac hypertrophy using single-cell and bulk transcriptomics. Mitochondrial fusion/fission imbalance emerged as a

Influence of pacing modalities on the incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients without prior atrial fibrillation. A prospective study.

AIM: Many studies suggest that patients who receive a physiological pacemaker have a reduced incidence of atrial fibrillation compared to patients receiving a ventricular pacemaker. METHODS: In order to evaluate the impact of different pacing modalities on the incidence of atrial fibrillation, we prospectively analysed 210 patients. Patients with previous episodes of atrial fibrillation were excluded from the study. The patient population included 110 patients paced for sick sinus syndrome and 100 patients paced for total atrioventricular block or second degree type atrioventricular block. R

Research on sound quality prediction of vehicle interior noise using the human-ear physiological model.

In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the sound quality of vehicle interior noise, a novel sound quality prediction model was proposed based on the physiological response predicted metrics, i.e., loudness, sharpness, and roughness. First, a human-ear sound transmission model was constructed by combining the outer and middle ear finite element model with the cochlear transmission line model. This model converted external input noise into cochlear basilar membrane response. Second, the physiological perception models of loudness, sharpness, and roughness were constructed by transforming

Prediction and Elimination of Physiological Tremor During Control of Teleoperated Robot Based on Deep Learning.

Currently, teleoperated robots, with the operator's input, can fully perceive unknown factors in a complex environment and have strong environmental interaction and perception abilities. However, physiological tremors in the human hand can seriously affect the accuracy of processes that require high-precision control. Therefore, this paper proposes an EEMD-IWOA-LSTM model, which can decompose the physiological tremor of the hand into several intrinsic modal components (IMF) by using the EEMD decomposition strategy and convert the complex nonlinear and non-stationary physiological tremor curve

Exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy: cellular and molecular mechanisms of cardiac adaptation following physical activity.

Cardiac hypertrophy, characterized by an increase in the size of cardiac myocytes, is an adaptive response to increased workload on the cardiac tissue following physiological stimuli, such as exercise, and pathological conditions, such as hypertension or valvular heart disease. Typically, physiological hypertrophy induced by various exercise modalities leads to beneficial adaptations, such as improved contractile function and increased oxidative capacity. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological cardiac hypertrophy is crucial for developing targeted therapeutic strategie

Anxiety sensitivity moderates the subjective experience but not the physiological response to psychosocial stress.

The ability to regulate emotional reactions is a complex process that incorporates both physiological and psychological components. Anxiety sensitivity is a construct associated with the negative and often misinterpretation of bodily sensations, with previous findings suggesting that anxiety sensitivity may regulate an individual's physiological response to an acute stress response. The aim of the current study, therefore, was to identify whether anxiety sensitivity moderates the physiological and subjective experience of acute psychosocial stress. Fifty-eight undergraduate students high and l

[Aminopeptidases activity in the amniotic fluid in women in labor with EPH-gestosis].

The thesis of this work was to compare the aminopeptidases activity in the amniotic fluid obtained during the physiological labor and during the labor of pregnant with EPH-gestosis, in presence of the beta-naphtlamidic L-amino-acids (alanine, leucine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, histidine, cysteine) chromogenic substrates. It was assumed the 3-7 times increase in the aminopeptidases activity counted to the proteins from the labored with EPH-gestosis comparing to the labored in physiological labor. Among the used substrates the highest activity in both groups of labored women was measured in prese

The psychopharmacologic and prolactin response after large doses of naloxone in man.

Large doses of naloxone (150-300 mg), placebo, and morphine (15-30 mg) were given intramuscularly to human volunteers and compared using measures of subjective feeling states, physiological measures and discriminative features. Plasma prolactin responses after naloxone 210 mg and placebo were compared. The subjective measures and discriminative features of naloxone revealed that the drug is subtly psychoactive but the stimulus is vague and cannot be identified clearly as an opioid agonist or antagonist in nondependent opioid-using volunteers. The physiologic and prolactin responses closely res

Physiological synchrony in supportive discussions: An examination of co-rumination, relationship type, and heterogeneity.

During times of stress, we look to close others for support. Social support conversations are critical for relationship maintenance and well-being. Yet, certain ways of talking about problems-such as co-ruminating-can exacerbate stress. Since social support and co-rumination are both dyadic processes, it is important to examine physiological responses during these conversations in a dyadic manner. Little research has examined physiological synchrony of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) during social support conversations or co-ruminative conversations. The current research capitalizes on an

Differentiation of Horner Syndrome and Physiological Anisocoria by Automated Pupillometry.

BACKGROUND: The differentiation of Horner syndrome from physiological anisocoria is important yet clinically challenging. We investigated the diagnostic accuracy of pupillometry to discriminate Horner syndrome from physiological anisocoria compared to pharmacological testing with the alpha-2-agonist apraclonidine, which is considered the current gold standard. METHODS: Forty-four adult patients, mostly referred to our neuro-ophthalmology service for evaluation of anisocoria, were included. Automated binocular pupillometry was performed under standardized light conditions before and >30 minute

Reversal of NAFLD After VSG Is Independent of Weight-Loss but RYGB Offers More Efficacy When Maintained on a High-Fat Diet.

PURPOSE: Bariatric surgery is emerging as an effective treatment for obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Recently, we demonstrated that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), but not vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), resulted in improvements to white adipose physiology and enhanced brown adipose functioning. Since beneficial alterations to liver health are also expected after bariatric surgery, comparing the post-operative effects of RYGB and VSG on liver physiology is essential to their application in the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects o
