Anthelmintic resistance and homeostatic plasticity (Brugia malayi).

Homeostatic plasticity refers to the capacity of excitable cells to regulate their activity to make compensatory adjustments to long-lasting stimulation. It is found across the spectrum of vertebrate and invertebrate species and is driven by changes in cytosolic calcium; it has not been explored in parasitic nematodes when treated with therapeutic drugs. Here we have studied the adaptation of Brugia malayi to exposure to the anthelmintic, levamisole that activates muscle AChR ion-channels. We found three phases of the Brugia malayi motility responses as they adapted to levamisole: an initial s

Macrophage Plasticity in Reproduction and Environmental Influences on Their Function.

Macrophages are key components of the innate immune system and exhibit extensive plasticity and heterogeneity. They play a significant role in the non-pregnant cycling uterus and throughout gestation they contribute to various processes underpinning reproductive success including implantation, placentation and parturition. Macrophages are also present in breast milk and impart immunomodulatory benefits to the infant. For a healthy pregnancy, the maternal immune system must adapt to prevent fetal rejection and support development of the semi-allogenic fetus without compromising host defense. Th

Family-Centered Pediatric Plastic Surgery Care.

Our multidisciplinary cleft palate and craniofacial center was established in 1978 and manages more than 5,000 active patients from birth to skeletal maturity. Over the past four years we have implemented a complex family-centered reorganization, with the goal of improving care and patient retention. Through our implementation of a familycentered approach, we have also decreased treatment burden, need for secondary procedures and cost of care. 1-12.

Metabolic Plasticity Aids Amphotropism of Coxiella burnetii.

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of query (Q) fever in humans, is an obligate intracellular bacterium. C. burnetii can naturally infect a broad range of host organisms (e.g., mammals and arthropods) and cell types. This amphotropic nature of C. burnetii, in combination with its ability to utilize both glycolytic and gluconeogenic carbon sources, suggests that the pathogen relies on metabolic plasticity to replicate in nutritionally diverse intracellular environments. To test the significance of metabolic plasticity in C. burnetii host cell colonization, C. burnetii intracellular replicat

Osseointegration of Extremity Prostheses: A Primer for the Plastic Surgeon.

Interest in amputation surgery has increased in conjunction with rising public awareness about amputee care. To date, plastic surgeons have impacted the quality of life and functional potential of amputees through novel strategies for sensory feedback and prosthesis control and various techniques for neuroma treatment and prevention. Osseointegration, which involves the direct skeletal attachment of a prosthesis to bone, has the ability to further maximize amputee function. There exists a critical role for plastic surgeons to help optimize techniques for extremity osseointegration through impr

Auditory Neural Plasticity in Tinnitus Mechanisms and Management.

Tinnitus, which is the perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external acoustic stimulus, including change of hearing and neural plasticity, has become an increasingly important ailment affecting the daily life of a considerable proportion of the population and causing significant burdens for both the affected individuals and society as a whole. Here, we briefly review the epidemiology and classification of tinnitus, and the currently available treatments are discussed in terms of the available evidence for their mechanisms and efficacy. The conclusion drawn from the available e

Functional plasticity and evolutionary adaptation of allosteric regulation.

Allostery is a fundamental regulatory mechanism of protein function. Despite notable advances, understanding the molecular determinants of allostery remains an elusive goal. Our current knowledge of allostery is principally shaped by a structure-centric view, which makes it difficult to understand the decentralized character of allostery. We present a function-centric approach using deep mutational scanning to elucidate the molecular basis and underlying functional landscape of allostery. We show that allosteric signaling exhibits a high degree of functional plasticity and redundancy through m

Nonaesthetic Applications for Botulinum Toxin in Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Since their introduction to clinical medicine in 1989, botulinum toxin injections have been used for many indications. First used for nonsurgical management of strabismus, botulinum toxin injections are now widely used in plastic and reconstructive surgery for aesthetic indications; however, nonaesthetic indications of botulinum toxin have grown tremendously over the past two decades and span numerous specialties, including urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, gynecology, plastic surgery, general surgery, and neurology. The present review aims to highlight nonaesthe

Sex hormones and proteins involved in brain plasticity.

It is well known that peripheral sex steroid hormones cross the blood-brain barrier and control a broad spectrum of reproductive behaviors. However, their role in other essential brain functions was investigated since the 1980s, when the accumulation of pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone in the brain of mammalian species was determined. Since then, numerous studies have demonstrated the participation of sex hormones in brain plasticity processes. Sex hormones through both genomic and non-genomic mechanisms of action are capable of inducing gene transcription or activating signaling cascad

Hypothermia: Impact on plasticity following brain injury.

Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is a potent neuroprotectant against multiple forms of brain injury, but in some cases, prolonged cooling is needed. Such cooling protocols raise the risk that TH will directly or indirectly impact neuroplasticity, such as after global and focal cerebral ischemia or traumatic brain injury. TH, depending on the depth and duration, has the potential to broadly affect brain plasticity, especially given the spatial, temporal, and mechanistic overlap with the injury processes that cooling is used to treat. Here, we review the current experimental and clinical evidence to

Is Plastic Surgery Combined with Obstetrical Procedures Safe?

In the existing reports on combined procedures of abdominoplasty with Cesarean section or natural delivery, a high incidence of complications and poor aesthetic results are reported. We conducted a survey with the participation of 61 plastic surgeons who performed this procedure in 808 patients, with an average of 13.24 procedures per surgeon. In 783 procedures (96.9% of the cases), the combination was with Cesarean section and 25 procedures (3.13% of cases) were combined with vaginal delivery. The plastic surgery procedures were as follows: 242 abdominoplasty procedures (29.95%), 210 abdomino

Cellular Plasticity in Musculoskeletal Development, Regeneration, and Disease.

In this review, we highlight themes from a recent workshop focused on "Plasticity of Cell Fate in Musculoskeletal Tissues" held at the Orthopaedic Research Society's 2019 annual meeting. Experts in the field provided examples of mesenchymal cell plasticity during normal musculoskeletal development, regeneration, and disease. A thorough understanding of the biology underpinning mesenchymal cell plasticity may offer a roadmap for promoting regeneration while attenuating pathologic differentiation. © 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society. Mechanisms of vagal plasticity influencing feeding behavior.

Sensory neurons of the vagus nerve receive many different peripheral signals that can change rapidly and frequently throughout the day. The ability of these neurons to convey the vast array of nuanced information to the brain requires neuronal adaptability. In this review we discuss evidence for neural plasticity in vagal afferent neurons as a mechanism for conveying nuanced information to the brain important for the control of feeding behavior. We provide evidence that synaptic plasticity, changes in membrane conductance, and neuropeptide specification are mechanisms that allow flexibility in
