The global social, political and health emergency presented by the human immunodeficiency virus and the acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has also once again propelled tuberculosis (TB) into a global public health emergency. The examples I will use to show how activism and social mobilisation can assist in overcoming TB are primarily from my home country, South Africa. Despite significant differences in health systems, culture, politics and history, there are lessons that could be used to advocate for TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care globally. Our country experiences g

The focus of the study was to prioritize six emergency medical service treatment factors in terms of their impact upon patient satisfaction in the prehospital setting. The six treatment areas analyzed were: EMS response time; medical care provided on scene; explanation of care by the provider; the provider's ability to reduce patient anxiety; the provider's ability to meet the patient's non-medical needs; and the level of courtesy/politeness shown by the EMS provider toward the patient. Telephone interviews were conducted with both patients and bystanders to obtain their perception of how well

Human migration is a fundamental driver of global demographic change, shaping population structure, labour markets and social policy across countries1-3. Although long-term migration patterns are often linked to economic development4, they can shift rapidly in response to shocks such as conflict, environmental crises and political change5. Despite its importance, migration remains difficult to measure consistently: existing data are sparse, concentrated in high-income settings and are fragmented across incompatible definitions, temporal resolutions and data types6-8. Past efforts have relied o

BACKGROUND: Based on the 2016 and 2021 ESMO Women for Oncology (W4O) surveys, which revealed persistent gender disparities in oncology, we conducted a national survey to examine career-related challenges among oncology professionals in Croatia and compare them with international trends. METHODS: We administered an anonymous online survey adapted from the 2021 ESMO W4O questionnaire, contextualized for the Croatian setting. The survey explored the perceived impact of gender, political affiliation, religion, and sexual orientation on career development. Responses were analyzed by gender and age.

BACKGROUND: Although rare diseases (RD) are increasingly becoming a priority for healthcare activities and services around the world, developing research policy for investigating RD in public settings proves challenging due to the limited nature of existing evidence. Rare conditions require the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders in order to promote general awareness and garner political support. Consequently, it is critically important to identify trends in the various types of research focusing on rare disease stakeholders, including the specific topics or issues to be included in su

For a large number of health care providers world-wide, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is their first experience in population-based care. In past decades, lower population densities, infectious disease outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics were rare and driven almost exclusively by natural disasters, predatory animals, and war. In the early 1900s, Sir William Osler first advanced the knowledge of zoonotic diseases that are spread from reservoir animals to human animals. Once rare, they now make up 71% or more of new diseases. Globally, zoonotic spread occurs for many reasons.

BACKGROUND: Kano is one of the high-risk states for polio transmission in Northern Nigeria. The state reported more cases of wild polioviruses (WPVs) than any other state in the country. The Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey of 2013 indicated that OPV3 coverage in the routine immunization (RI) programmewas 57.9%. Additionally, serial polio seroprevalence studies conducted from 2011 to 2015 in the eightmetropolitan LGAs indicated low immunity levels against all three polio serotypes in children below one year. Areas with sub-optimal RI coverage such as Kanothat fail to remove all tOPV durin

INTRODUCTION: We have investigated the recent crisis of psychiatry in perspective of the last two centuries of its history. First and longer part of this period belongs to the Modern era. The second part beginning in the sixties of the last century is the Postmodern era, the one we live in today. We have pointed out that the recent crisis has not come by accident but as one of the several changes characterising our transition into the era labelled "Postmodern".
METHODS: The crisis of psychiatry was analysed in respect of the development of science and in social context. We focused on psychiat

BACKGROUND: Research comparing inclusive education implementation in non-Western contexts, such as Indonesia and Oman, remains limited. Both countries share cultural similarities yet differ significantly in their education governance. Understanding these differences is crucial for improving inclusive education policies and practices.
METHODS: This study employed qualitative document analysis, reviewing 33 policy and implementation documents from Indonesia and Oman. The analysis focused on five dimensions: service models, teacher training, curriculum adaptation, community involvement, and cult

Geographic, social, political, and economic factors shape access to advanced neurotechnologies, yet little previous research has explored the barriers, enablers, and areas of opportunity for equitable and meaningful access for diverse patient communities across Canada. We applied a mixed-mode approach involving semi-structured interviews and rating scale questions to consult with 24 medical experts who are involved in the care of patients who undergo functional neurosurgery targeting the brain. Seven major themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: Health care system, Neurotechnology featur

UNLABELLED: ntroduction: Nigeria like many African countries has tried to start the newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism and many failed. Since sickle cell disease is more common in Nigeria, the hypothesis is that incorporating it into a screening programme for congenital hypothyroidism will improve the uptake of the programme by parents and government.
METHODS: Different aspects of newborn screening with difficulties and challenges in running newborn screening were identified and discussed.
RESULT: Identifying that for newborn screening to be successful, several key factors have

Neurological intensive care has evolved from the principles of respiratory care established during the poliomyelitis epidemics into a broad field encompassing all of the acute and serious aspects of neurological disease. The economic and political complexities of modern intensive care play a major role in organizing a unit and building a program. Central themes of practice in modern neurological intensive care units include the clinical physiology of intracranial pressure, cerebral blood flow, and brain electrical activity; the systemic abnormalities and medical complications of nervous system

Britain was the first country in the world to prescribe diamorphine (pharmaceutical-grade heroin) to heroin users as a treatment for opioid dependency. Known and admired internationally as the British System, Britain has a somewhat more ambivalent relationship to its own invention. Where patients were once prescribed diamorphine and other injectable opioids on an unsupervised basis, new patients are no longer initiated in this way and those existing 'old system' patients are under threat. Carrying out ethnographic research at an advocacy service for people who use drugs, I explore this threat

BACKGROUND: Palestinian neurosurgery started with Dr. Antone Tarazi as the first Palestinian neurosurgeon. Before that, there was no organized neurosurgery specialty, and general surgeons performed neurosurgical procedures. Here we review the history of neurosurgery and neurosurgical applications in Palestine, evaluate some limitations of the current system, and discuss major challenges to improving this system.
METHODS: We collected information from various sources in either English or Arabic.
RESULTS: The development of neurosurgery and neurosurgical training in Palestine began in 1960 wit

1. Board Certification System of Psychiatry There was a heated debate about "Postgraduate Psychiatric Education and Board Certification of Psychiatry" in the annual meeting for the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology held in Nagasaki in 1968 and in Kanazawa in 1969. The oppositions of young psychiatrists were as follows; 1) Issues of low cost of medical expense as government politics, social protect politics from psychiatric patients, and improper management of patients in mental hospitals should be dealt before making Board Certification System of Psychiatry. 2) Management of the Soc

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) screening can improve lives and reduce mortality through prevention and targeted treatment, but screening programmes are not universally available in the settings which could most benefit from them. We aimed to understand the implementation considerations for prenatal and newborn SCD screening programmes in countries with a high livebirth prevalence of SCD using the socioecological model of health.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of qualitative evidence relating to prenatal and newborn screening programmes for SCD in the thirty countries with th

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, with high prevalence across age groups and ongoing disparities in access to preventive care. While national initiatives such as the 'Caries-Free Indonesia by 2030' goal signal increasing political attention, the effectiveness and equity of current oral health strategies remain uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to assess the policy direction and documented effectiveness of Indonesia's national-level caries prevention programmes through a review of government policy documents and relevant literature.

Pandemic influenza preparedness has contributed significantly to building, strengthening and maintaining countries' core capacities to prepare for health emergencies. The Pandemic influenza preparedness framework for the sharing of influenza viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits (the PIP framework) was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2011. The experiences and lessons learnt from the implementation of the PIP framework have provided insights that can be used to strengthen preparedness for epidemics of other priority high-threat pathogens in the World Health Organization (WHO

BACKGROUND: Several strategic documents aimed at integrating quality of care and patient safety into health systems have been developed, both as guiding documents produced by renowned international organisations and as national documents with a political purpose. However, the development, implementation and monitoring/evaluation of quality of care and patient safety strategic/policy documents are often delicate and challenging processes. OBJECTIVES: In order to support policymakers and decision makers who plan to develop or improve their national quality of care and patient safety strategic/po
