Talca no es Santiago: Moral geography, rurality, and infrastructure of possibility in LGBTIQA+ violence and survival.

BACKGROUND: Violence against LGBTIQA+ individuals is not limited to discrete acts of aggression. It also constitutes a territorial ecology that unevenly distributes habitability, safety, and recognition. This study examines how the statement "Talca is not Santiago" works as more than a comment on city size: it names a moral geography where reputation, social surveillance, and uneven access to infrastructure produce distinct thresholds of visibility, risk, and agency. METHODS: We used Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) following Braun and Clarke to analyze a subcorpus of seven individual interv

How an inter-organizational network hub orchestrates collective leadership to advance population health.

Inter-organizational networks are increasingly used to address complex health challenges, yet little is known about how "hub" organizations at the center of such networks cultivate relational processes that enable network effectiveness. Drawing on organizational network and collective leadership theories, we examined the relational processes that a structurally central hub organization used to influences a multi-sector network. We used in-depth qualitative methods to study a local health department that served as hub of a network of over 25 organizations establishing new behavioral health cris

Socio-geographic and demographic analysis of the official national registry data of dogs' population in Portugal in 2023. Data from SIAC.

National data on dog populations has been historically scarce, hindering effective policy and welfare efforts. The SIAC (Information System for Companion Animals) registry now provides a robust dataset for analyzing dog demographics in Portugal. This study examines SIAC data (2004-2023), analyzing breed, sex, reproductive status, age, and geographic distribution. Chi-square tests with post-hoc residual analysis identified significant demographic and breed variations across districts, while clustering based on standardized residuals grouped districts by distinct profiles. Geographic and socioec

Systematic review of barriers to and enablers of tuberculosis diagnosis, notification, and intervention for designing customised intervention package to minimise 'missing millions' in tribal communities of India.

BACKGROUND: Tribal communities in India experience a very high burden of tuberculosis (TB), estimated at 7030 per million. The diagnosis and notification gaps are substantial, partly due to the geographical remoteness of these populations. Within an overarching study to design an intervention for finding the 'missing millions' among tribal communities, we conducted a systematic review to identify the barriers and enablers of tuberculosis diagnosis and notification, with the aim of developing a contextually relevant intervention. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science using ter

A social network analysis model approach to understand tuberculosis transmission in remote rural Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Quality surveillance data used to build tuberculosis (TB) transmission models are frequently unavailable and may overlook community intrinsic dynamics that impact TB transmission. Social network analysis (SNA) generates data on hyperlocal social-demographic structures that contribute to disease transmission. METHODS: We collected social contact data in five villages and built SNA-informed village-specific stochastic TB transmission models in remote Madagascar. A name-generator approach was used to elicit individual contact networks. Recruitment included confirmed TB patients, foll

Features of Occupational Health Risks in the Russian Arctic (on the Example of Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug).

Working in the Arctic increases the risk of occupational diseases, which is especially important in the context of acute shortage of manpower in the region. The purpose of the study was to comparatively evaluate the working conditions and occupational pathology in Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO) and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (ChAO) of Russia. We analyzed the results of socio-hygienic monitoring "Working Conditions and Occupational Morbidity" in 2008-2018. Despite similar climatic and socio-economic conditions, significant differences exist in the health risks of the working populations of the tw

The hirsutism scoring system should be population specific.

The aim of our study was to evaluate severity of hirsutism, assessed via the Ferriman-Gallwey scoring system in 12 different androgen-sensitive skin areas among 65 consecutive hirsute patients with functional androgen excess (polycystic ovary syndrome and idiopathic hirsutism) from the Central Anatolian region of Turkey. Results of this descriptive study showed that the buttocks/perineum, sideburn, and neck areas greatly contributed to the total hirsutism score, rather than the upper arm, upper back, and upper abdomen.

Wealth, household heterogeneity and livelihood diversification of Fulani pastoralists in the Kachia Grazing Reserve, northern Nigeria, during a period of social transition.

BACKGROUND: A mixed methods study was undertaken in the Kachia Grazing Reserve of northern Nigeria. Surveys in March, June and October 2011 included focus group discussions, key informant and in-depth household interviews, concerning livelihood practices, animal health, ownership, and productivity. In May 2011, 249 Fulani families fleeing post-election violence entered the reserve with their livestock, increasing the number of households by one third. RESULTS: Despite being settled within a grazing reserve, over half of households sent all their cattle away on seasonal transhumance and anothe

Midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes influencing their ability to provide caseload care to socially disadvantaged and vulnerable women.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes of care when working in a caseload model (Midwifery Group Practice MGP) for socially disadvantaged and vulnerable childbearing women. DESIGN: This study used Donabedian's theoretical framework for evaluating the quality of health care provision. Of the 17 eligible midwives, 15 participated in focus group discussions and two others provided written comments. Thematic analysis was guided by three headings; clinical outcomes, processes of care and organisational structure. FINDINGS: Midwives believed
