The pathoparasitology of the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates: a review.

A review of the literature concerning the gross and histologic lesions associated with protozoal and metazoal parasitism in the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates is presented. In addition, the natural history, morphology, life cycle, methods for diagnosis, and potential for zoonotic disease are reviewed briefly for each parasite discussed. The parasite species reviewed in detail are those most common or most likely to produce lesions in the alimentary tract and pancreas of the nonhuman primate host. All parasites, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic, in each major group (protozo…

Pathophysiologic responses of the subhuman primate in experimental septic shock.

The grave clinical aspects of septic shock have stimulated the search for an experimental animal model which more closely relates to human p … ke were uniformly present. These alterations bear close resemblance to those seen in other subhuman primates administered short term doses of live organisms. There were extensive morphologic changes in pulmonary, cardiac, and renal beds. Glomeruli contained multiple fibrin thrombi and disrupted platelets, and the glomerular capillary endothelium was focall …

Exposure route drives SARS-CoV-2 infection patterns in non-human primates.

Public health policy and clinical interventions against infectious diseases rely on understanding the factors that govern the initiation and progression of infections inside hosts. Animal infection experiments are essential tools to study these complex, multi-scale processes under controlled conditions, and they have shown that the dose and route of exposure can influence within-host disease dynamics. However, observed differences are difficult to quantify and to disentangle from confounding factors because small sample sizes limit the statistical power and scientific scope of individual studi

Alcohol Consumption and Gut Microbiota-Derived Metabolites in Primates: A Systematic Review.

Alcohol consumption has been increasingly associated with alterations in the gut microbiota and its metabolic activity; however, evidence regarding microbiota-derived metabolites remains fragmented. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the effects of alcohol consumption on gut microbiota-derived metabolites in humans and non-human primates. The review was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and included studies published between 2012 and 2026. Searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, S…

Canonical decision computations underlie behavioral and neural signatures of cooperation in primates.

Successful cooperation requires the dynamic integration of social cues. However, the neural mechanisms supporting this complex process remain unknown. Here, we reveal that the primate dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) implements a gaze-dependent social evidence accumulation process to guide cooperative decisions in freely moving marmoset dyads. A drift-diffusion process in which the partner's action variability is accumulated through social gaze best explains the cooperative actions of the actor. Single-neuron recordings in the dmPFC revealed a direct neural correlate: the slope of predict

Evolutionary Signal and Development of the Foramen Dorsum Sellae (Nov.) Across Primates.

The sella turcica, a small depression within the sphenoid bone in mammal skulls, exhibits notable morphological variation across primates, including the occasional presence of accessory openings. We investigated one such foramen within the posterior wall of the sella turcica that has been variably described in humans and other primates. We scored foramen presence in humans (N = 114) and 30 genera of non-human primates (N = 1468), tested its phylogenetic signal, conducted human and macaque dissections, and tracked its developmental onset with newborn and infant baboons. The foramen was present …

Immune regulation following allogeneic iPSC-derived cardiomyocyte transplantation in non-human primates.

AIMS: This study explores the efficacy of immunosuppressive regimens commonly used in heart transplantation for promoting the survival of allogeneic induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte (iPSC-CM) grafts in non-human primates, specifically cynomolgus monkeys. METHODS AND RESULTS: By combining methylprednisolone (MPL), calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs), and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), we ensured adequate graft survival without acute rejection. Histological analysis showed iPSC-CM survival, vascularization, and minimal immune rejection, despite immaturity. Reducing the immunosuppress…

Adaptive intrathecal nanorobotics in mice and nonhuman primates for navigated CNS therapy.

Intrathecal delivery for central nervous system (CNS) therapy lacks spatiotemporal control due to spinal canal anatomical constraints, especially at human scale. We developed an adaptive magnetic nanorobotic platform enabling multimode swarm mobility for in vivo spinal canal navigation in mice and nonhuman primates. Programmable chain-like, vortex-like, and ribbon-like swarm were accomplished, and vortex swarm was indicated as optimal strategy for adaptive intrathecal navigation. Driven by a robotic arm-generated magnetic field, the vortex swarms indicate navigation within spinal canal over ce…

Strategies to Decipher Neuron Identity from Extracellular Recordings in Behaving Nonhuman Primates.

Identification of the neuron type is critical when using extracellular recordings in awake, behaving animal subjects to understand computation in neural circuits. Yet, modern recording probes have limited power to resolve neuron identity. Here, we present a generalizable framework for assigning the neuron type from extracellular recordings in nonhuman primates. The framework uses a combination of logic, circuit architecture, laminar information, and functional discharge properties. We apply the framework to the well characterized architecture of the cerebellar circuit by using well validated s…

Functional Relationships Between Wrist Joint Morphology and Ulnar Deviation in Strepsirrhine Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Ulnar deviation is a fundamental hand movement reflecting different positional behaviors that characterize primates and other arboreal mammals. Few experimental data exist on the relationship between wrist joint morphology and ulnar deviation of the hand in living primates. This study tests functional relationships between carpal joint anatomy and the degree of ulnar deviation for eight strepsirrhine species representing major locomotor groups. METHODS: Passive ranges of ulnar deviation were measured from radiographs of the hand of 25 anesthetized subjects using a motion analysis …

Phosphodiesterase 7 inhibition reduces L-DOPA-induced dyskinesias in parkinsonian nonhuman primates.

The mechanisms underlying L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID) largely arise from maladaptive plasticity in striatal circuits leading to altered neuronal responses to dopamine (DA) signaling. Cyclic nucleotides play a major role in the molecular cascades of DA signaling, and particularly cAMP is known to be associated with LID mechanisms. Cyclic nucleotide levels in striatal neurons are regulated by phosphodiesterases (PDEs), and 1 isoenzyme with selective affinity for cAMP and high expression in the striatum is PDE7. Here, the PDE7 inhibitor OMS-401 was evaluated for antidyskinetic effects in a no

Trichuris infection in captive non-human primates in zoological gardens in Spain.

Currently, there is limited available information on the epidemiology of parasitic infections in captive non-human primates (NHPs) and their zoonotic potential. However, numerous cases of helminth infections in NHPs have been documented in several zoos around the world, with one of the most prevalent being those of the genus Trichuris. The main objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of infection by Trichuris spp. in primates from zoological gardens in Spain and to ascertain, at the species level, the specific Trichuris species harbored by these hosts by using mitochondrial an…

The oral drug obeldesivir protects nonhuman primates against lethal Ebola virus infection.

Obeldesivir (ODV; GS-5245) is an orally administered ester prodrug of the parent nucleoside GS-441524 that has broad spectrum antiviral activity inhibiting viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases. We recently showed that ODV completely protects cynomolgus macaques against lethal infection with Sudan virus when given 24 hours after parenteral exposure. Here, we report that once daily oral ODV treatment of cynomolgus and rhesus macaques for 10 days confers 80 and 100% protection, respectively, against lethal Ebola virus infection when treatment is initiated 24 hours after mucosal (conjunctival) expo
