To our knowledge, ours is the first case of applying a 3D-printed prosthetic beak to an Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana). A stork in captivity underwent several surgeries for beak fractures, but the lower-mandible fractures failed to be repaired. Therefore, we applied a patient-specific beak prosthesis of titanium alloy and nylon. Because the prosthetic beak could not be maintained due to mandible and soft-tissue inflammation, the stork was euthanized. Still, we confirmed typical behavior and feeding for ~3 months after surgery. This report highlights some of the challenges we encountered and

Currently, 3D printers, especially digital light processing (DLP) printers, are widely used in clinical dentistry. However, due to the shrinkage property of resin, their accuracy is not optimal for full-arch dental model printing. To overcome these limitations, fused deposition modeling (FDM) with filament that undergoes minimum shrinkage was introduced. Accordingly, a combination of FDM printing with the specific tooth die output of DLP printing for the full-arch dental model is proposed in the present report.

Bioactive compounds and probiotic cells are often limited in food applications by poor solubility, low stability, and restricted bioavailability. Emulsion-based delivery systems, particularly high internal phase emulsions, improve loading capacity and influence gastrointestinal behavior. Pickering emulsion gels stabilized by colloidal particles show enhanced interfacial stability and mechanical integrity compared to conventional emulsions. Their performance is determined by the interaction between particle design, interfacial assembly, and bulk network formation. This review analyzes Pickering

Fused filament fabrication (FFF) represents a straightforward additive manufacturing technique applied in the medical sector for personalized patient treatment. However, frequently processed biopolymers lack sufficient thermal stability to be used as auxiliary devices such as surgical guides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional accuracy of experimental biocopolyester blends with improved thermal characteristics after printing, annealing and sterilization. A total of 160 square specimens and 40 surgical guides for oral implant placement were printed. One subgroup of each mater

Frontal cranioplasty in gender affirmation surgery requires precise identification of the borders of the frontal sinus in order to reduce brow prominence effectively and avoid complications. Several approaches to this have been described in the literature, but many techniques are imprecise or logistically cumbersome. Custom 3D-printing of cutting guides is an emerging modality that offers a method of identifying the frontal sinus accurately and rapidly. We herein present the results of 5 transgender woman who underwent type 3 frontal cranioplasty with the assistance of 3D-printed custom cuttin

Artificial teeth have several advantages in preclinical training. The aim of this study is to three-dimensionally (3D) print accurate artificial teeth using scans from X-ray microtomography (XMT). Extracted and artificial teeth were imaged at 90 kV and 40 kV, respectively, to create detailed high contrast scans. The dataset was visualised to produce internal and external meshes subsequently exported to 3D modelling software for modification before finally sending to a slicing program for printing. After appropriate parameter setting, the printer deposited material in specific locations layer b

OBJECTIVE: This study presents a novel digital interproximal enamel reduction (IER) clinical procedure, aiming to improve the effectiveness of IER processes in orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: A malocclusion case of skeletal-class I and angle-class I was selected for the experimental investigation. A three-dimensional (3D) model of the dentition was constructed using scanning data from a plaster model. The IER volume was measured by the overlay area of two neighboring crowns on the arranged virtual teeth. For the upper dentition, a guide plate was innovatively designed based on the original su

Three-dimensional (3D) structured light scanning is a beneficial documentation technique in forensic anthropology because such models facilitate continued analysis and data sharing; they can also be 3D printed for demonstrative purposes in legal proceedings and training, without risk of damage to the original skeletal material. As its application in forensic anthropology is relatively novel, the aim of the present study is to statistically evaluate the dimensional accuracy of 3D structured light scans and 3D prints for ten bone types, including the cranium, mandible, 2nd cervical vertebra (C2)

PURPOSE: To determine the influence of using 3D-printed scan aids in varying colors on the trueness of digital scans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A master cast with five multi-unit analogues was scanned. The acquired dataset was exported to standard tessellation language (STL) file format to serve as the reference STL. 3D printing of the prototype in five distinct colors (beige [SABEIGE], grey [SAGREY], white [SAWHITE], red [SARED], and blue [SABLUE]) of polylactic acid filament was executed. The experimental STLs of each color group were aligned to the reference STL. RMS values were solely comput

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is often necessary to manufacture 3D-printed medical models (MMs) required for mandibular restoration due to trauma or malignant tumor. Although cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a preferable method of mandibular imaging, additional scanning is often unjustified. To test whether a single radiologic protocol could be used for mandibular reconstructions, the human mandible was scanned with 6 MDCT and 2 CBCT protocols and later 3D-printed using a fused-deposition modelling technique. Then, we assessed linear measures on the mandible and compared them

Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is the most common tracheobronchial obstruction. Most cases are mild to moderate; therefore, they do not need surgical treatment. Severe tracheomalacia, however, represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge since they are very heterogeneous. In the armamentarium of resources for the treatment of dynamic airway collapse, splints and stents are two underused strategies and yet, they may represent the best alternative in selected cases. Lately, computed tomography 3D reconstruction of the airway has been used for the design of virtual models that can be 3D-printed

Use of additive manufacturing is growing rapidly in the orthotics field. This technology allows orthotics to be designed directly on digital scans of limbs. However, little information is available about scanners and 3D scans. The aim of this study is to look at the agreement between manual measurements, high-level and low-cost handheld 3D scanners. We took two manual measurements and three 3D scans with each scanner from 14 lower limbs. The lower limbs were divided into 17 sections of 30mm each from 180mm above the mid-patella to 300mm below. Time to record and to process the three 3D scans f

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have emerged as a prominent delivery vehicle for therapeutics such as mRNA vaccines and genetic medicines. However, current manufacturing technologies struggle to balance precision, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. While microfluidic mixing offers excellent particle control, it often faces operational challenges, including channel fouling and a reliance on costly single-use chips that create bottlenecks for reproducible and scalable production of LNPs. Conversely, bulk methods lack uniformity, and conventional extrusion remains a labor-intensive batch process. He

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is adopted in manufacturing field due to its ability to rapidly fabricate complex objects. However, a substantial amount of polymeric waste derived from 3D printing process and its limited recyclability have raised environmental concerns. This study proposes a strategic approach for the valorization of 3D printing waste into pyrolytic gas by employing CO2 as a reaction medium. A commercial 3D printing filament (3DPF) was used as a model compound of 3D printing waste and identified as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) by FT-IR analysis. Thermo-gravimetric ana
