Tuberculosis cases in a prison in the extreme south of Brazil.

Introduction. Tuberculosis (TB) control is a challenge, especially in vulnerable populations, such as prisoners.Hypothesis. In prison houses, the transmission of micro-organisms that cause infectious diseases can occur due to the susceptibility and immune compromise of prisoners, and due to the precarious physical conditions of the prison houses. However, strategies such as monitoring by health professionals, can mitigate the transmission of these micro-organisms, as well as, reduce the number of coinfections and antimicrobials resistance.Aim. This study attempted to analyse the dynamics of tr

A taxometric analysis of psychopathy in a Chinese prison sample.

As psychopathy is one of the major personality disorders-relating to severe pathological syndromes of personality-clarity concerning the nature of the latent structure of psychopathy is necessary for accurate assessment. In the present study, psychopathy was assessed in 339 Chinese male prisoners aged 18 to 35 years with three subscales of the Youth Psychopathy Trait Inventory - Short Version (YPI-SV). Three different taxometric analyses were used to assess the taxonicity of psychopathy, and a three-factor solution to the YPI-SV was used as the basis of the analysis. Consistency tests of the t

Childbirth and pregnancy in prison: social belonging and vulnerabilities.

Pregnancy and childbirth in prison can intensify power relationships and mechanisms that encourage inequality in care provided to women and children, with adverse consequences for the lives of both. This issue gave rise to research to understand women's experiences of pregnancy and childbirth in prison. Method: working from theoretical perspectives that address intersections among race, gender and social class, this qualitative study was conducted by interviewing women who had left a penitentiary in southern Brazil. The participants, mostly young, black women, reported being subjected to situa

Vaccination Coverage among Prisoners: A Systematic Review.

Prison inmates are highly susceptible for several infectious diseases, including vaccine-preventable diseases. We conducted a systematic international literature review on vaccination coverage against hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis A virus (HAV), combined HAV/HBV, tetanus-diphtheria, influenza, pneumococcal, and combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) in prison inmates, according to the PRISMA guidelines. The electronic databases were used Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cinhal. No language or time limit were applied to the search. We defined vaccination coverage as the proportion

Introduction: Prison foodways. International and multidisciplinary perspectives.

The role of prison food for those in custody has long been either underestimated, or a narrow subject approached from the vantage point of nutritionists. This special issue on prison food, tackles extant knowledge gaps by highlighting the scope of interdisciplinary scholarship, and studies of prison foodways that operate at the intersection of several disciplines. As an introduction to this special issue, we highlight the symbolic role of food as an underestimated feature of the prison environment. For many prisoners, the restrictive detention conditions give food a greater significance than i

Older persons with dementia in prison: an integrative review.

PURPOSE: The number of prisoners over 55 years is increasing and many are at risk of developing dementia. This has generated new responsibilities for prisons to provide health and social care for older persons. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the existing research literature regarding the phenomenon of the health and social care needs of older persons living with dementia in correctional settings. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using an integrative review method based on Whittemore and Knafl, the inclusion criteria for the review are: articles written in English; a focus on some form…

Social Work and Prison Labor: A Restorative Model.

The prison industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States, fueled largely by prison privatization. UN guidelines and U.S. federal policy outline standards for prison workers, but evidence suggests that protections have been ignored or circumvented. The current prison labor system allows corporations to profit from punishment that is disproportionately allocated to people of color and the poor. This article provides a critical analysis of prison labor policies in the United States and proposes a position for social workers on the ethical and restorative use of inmate lab

Challenges and mental health needs of women in prison.

The world population of women and girls in prison is increasing. Evidence points to high rates of mental health problems. Approaches to these problems vary and include both psychiatric epidemiology and gender-sensitive understanding and intervention. Prison environments and women prisoners' needs are complex and demand gender-aware care in view of women's vulnerability and histories of trauma. Declaration of interest A.B. was a clinical director of the offender care services at Central and North West London National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust until August 2016, with responsibility f

Integrating prevention and health promotion in a London prison.

Many people enter prison with poor health from a background of deprivation and with unhealthy lifestyle habits, yet spending time in prisons is often actively detrimental to health. There is therefore a clear value in providing high-quality health promotion services in prisons that are effective at reaching those who need support to improve their lifestyle. The health promotion service at HMP Brixton provides a health trainers clinic to address lifestyle issues but found that it was sometimes challenging to identify appropriate patients and that the service was inefficient as a result. Analysi…

Prison Nursing: Formation of a Stable Professional Identity.

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze how working within prison environments can influence the self-identity and professional identity of nurses. BACKGROUND: The prison environment can be a difficult environment for nurses to deliver care within, with nurses having to carry out activities that seem to go against their professional role, while at the same time providing care to prisoners who have greater health needs than the general population. There is a lack of theoretical consideration of how prison nurses carry out their role in the face of such challenges. METHOD: This study used a

Scotland's national naloxone program: The prison experience.

Launched in 2011, the Scottish national naloxone program marked an important development in public health policy. Central to its design were strategies to engage prisoners given their elevated risk of drug-related death in the weeks following liberation. Implementation across Scottish prisons has posed particular challenges linked to both operational issues within prison establishments and individual factors affecting staff delivering, and prisoners engaging, with the program. Barriers have been overcome through innovation and partnership working. This commentary has described how the developm…

Prison Homicide: An Extension of Violent Criminal Careers?

This study investigated prison homicide perpetrators through the lens of the career criminal perspective. Prison homicide, while a rare event, has critical implications for the prison environment. Despite its importance as a form of institutional violence that must be addressed, only four studies in the past five decades have explored the characteristics of homicide perpetrators/victims, the motives, and circumstances of the crime. The goal of the current study was to develop a better understanding of prison homicide by examining 54 perpetrators who committed 37 inmate homicides over 40 years
