Association of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia with behavioral problems in children with autism: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may contribute to behavioral problems. We examined their association with internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. METHODS: This cross-sectional study (October 2023 to March 2025) was conducted at a tertiary hospital in India. Of 179 children aged 2 to 18 years with newly diagnosed ASD (DSM-5 criteria), 173 were analyzed after six exclusions for missing data. ID and IDA were defined using age-specific World Health Organization thresholds and modeled as a th

Effects of odor-induced autobiographical memory recall interventions on the mental health of individuals with problem drinking behaviors.

The number of alcohol use disorders (AUD) worldwide has increased; therefore, understanding and preventing alcohol addiction is of utmost importance. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of memory recall interventions using the odor of alcohol on mental health and drinking behavior. We used three different studies, two online and one in a laboratory, where participants with and without problematic drinking behaviors were asked to recall autobiographical memories evoked by the odor of alcohol. They were asked to complete questionnaires to measure their autobiographical memor

The association between childhood maltreatment and multidimensional sleep health in adolescents at high risk of emotional and behavioral problems.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Impaired sleep following trauma such as childhood maltreatment is both a prognostic factor for future mental illness and a feasible intervention point. Yet, associations between childhood maltreatment and objectively measured sleep components are rarely found. New approaches advance the use of multidimensional sleep health scores instead of individual sleep components. However, no such methodology has been used to study the consequences of maltreatment on sleep health in adolescent cohorts so far. We hypothesized that childhood maltreatment will be associated with poorer slee

Linking Limbic-Prefrontal White Matter Microstructure to Behavioral Problems Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.

Diffusion tensor imaging studies in children suggest a link between abnormal white matter in limbic-prefrontal circuitry and behavioral problems. However, in children with traumatic injury, links between atypical limbic-prefrontal circuitry and new behavioral problems remain largely unexamined. In a prospective longitudinal study of children ages 8-15 years, we examined white matter microstructure 7 weeks following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or extracranial injury (EI) relative to typically developing children (TDC). Internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems were assessed via the

Trajectories of childhood bullying behaviors and conduct problems: Associations with cognitive functioning in a nationally representative cohort study.

Bullying behaviors and conduct problems are two forms of antisocial behavior that frequently co-occur in childhood. However, it remains unclear whether their developmental trajectories are distinct and the extent to which different aspects of cognitive functioning account for their development. We aimed to disentangle the developmental trajectories of bullying behaviors and conduct problems, test their interrelations across childhood, and assess associations with children's early cognitive functioning (executive functions, intelligent quotient [IQ], and theory of mind). Participants included 2

The Role of Alcohol Expectancies in the Association Between Behavioral Economic Alcohol Demand, Relative Reinforcement, and Alcohol Problems.

Alcohol consumption and related problems are common among college students. Prior research links behavioral economic (BE) constructs of alcohol demand and relative reinforcement (RR), and alcohol expectancies, with alcohol consumption/problems. However, research has yet to examine the associations between BE, expectancy theory, and alcohol use outcomes. In this study, college students (n = 287) completed a single online survey assessing demand, RR, alcohol expectancies, and alcohol use/problems. We examined the cross-sectional indirect association of expectancies and drinking on the relationsh

Understanding mealtime behavioral problems in nursing home residents living with dementia: a group concept mapping approach.

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia frequently experience mealtime behavioral problems that can result in reduced or lack of intake of food or fluids. Multiple underlying causes and expressions of mealtime behavioral problems complicate its interpretation and intervention, because problems originating from cognitive and functional decline and behavioral changes may interact. Healthcare professionals and family caregivers may encounter a variety of practical and moral dilemmas in dealing with these problems. We aimed at a better understanding of mealtime behavioral problems and related complex is

Household chaos and child problem behaviors: A cross-cultural examination of the mediating and moderating role of mindful parenting.

Household chaos has been shown to adversely associate with children's behavioral adjustment. However, the mechanism underlying the relationship between household chaos and children's behaviors is not yet fully understood. The current study proposes mindful parenting as an important mediating and moderating factor in the relationship between household chaos and child problem behaviors. This study also examines cultural influences in this process, comparing the UK and Türkiye, considering both mothers' and children's perspectives on mindful parenting. Cross-sectional questionnaires were administ…

The Prader-Willi syndrome Profile: validation of a new measure of behavioral and emotional problems in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare, neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the lack of expression of paternally imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-13. PWS features a complex behavioral phenotype, including hyperphagia, anxiety, compulsivity, rigidity, repetitive speech, temper outbursts, aggressivity, and skin-picking. Questionnaires exist for measuring hyperphagia, but not for the aggregation of other problems that are distinctive to PWS. A PWS-specific tool is needed for phenotypic research, and to help evaluate treatment efficacy in future clinical trials aimed at attenuating

Behavioral problems in children with unoperated rheumatic heart disease at national referral hospital in Ethiopia: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The behavioral disorder is characterized by a profound abnormality in an individual's cognition, emotion or behavior that reflects in psychological, biological or developmental dysfunction. Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a long-term sequel of single or recurrent acute rheumatic fever. Children with RHD are thought to be at increased risk for behavioral problems due to autoimmunity seen in pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS). Behavior disorder is not well studied among children with RHD. Hence, this study aimed to asses

Contributions of Multilevel Family Factors to Emotional and Behavioral Problems among Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder in China.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is one of the most prevalent childhood mental health disorders and is extremely affected by family factors. However, limited studies have addressed the issue from the perspective of family systems. The current study examines the associations between multilevel family factors (i.e., family cohesion/ adaptability at system level, mother-child and father-child attachment at a dyadic level, and child self-esteem at an individual level) and emotional and behavioral problems among children with ODD in China. The participants were 256 Chinese children with ODD and
