OBJECTIVES: Proctitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are known as sexually transmitted infections (STI). This study describes their clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects.

Under consideration is the classification of internal anal fistulas and indications to the corresponding methods of operation. The authors describe the techniques of their operations. The observations were performed of 81 patients with internal anal fistulas. The analysis of late results of the treatment of 58 fistulas shows that the used methods are effective and do not disturb the anal constrictor function.

The DNA status of 12 rectal biopsies, taken during the investigation of radiation proctitis, was investigated. Of these six were in the acute phase and six in the chronic phase. All of the acute biopsies had diploid DNA, despite bizarre histological epithelial cell appearances. Two of the chronic phase biopsies were to have aneuploid DNA profiles. This finding may be relevant to the increased risk of malignancy in irradiated tissues.

Anal endosonography (US) is a valuable tool to represent the normal anatomy of the anal canal and also to reliably examine patients with anal conditions.
